Sony Pictures has changed the release date of the big-screen adventures of The Smurfs from December 17, 2010, to July 29, 2011, a weekend with much less competition. The original opening weekend would have pitted the little blue guys against Yogi Bear, Tron Legacy, and another Sony film, Seth Rogen's The Green Hornet.
The Smurfs will be directed by Raja Gosnell (Scoobie Doo), with Donald McAlpine (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) acting as director of photography. There is little else known about this project, other than the fact that Sony has announced it will be released in 2-D and 3-D formats. It is still unclear whether The Smurfs will be completely CG-animated or a mixture of live-action and CG animation.
Next Showing: The Smurfs is scheduled to open July 29, 2011

The U.S. theatrical release of "The Smurfs" is facing a delay. Two weeks shy of Disney's revelation that "Tron Legacy" will be released on the same date as the planned release for "Smurfs", Sony Pictures came out with a new date, placing the CG-animation out of the studio's 2010 slate, as reported by Coming Soon.
Pulling out "Smurfs" from the crowded December 17, 2010 schedule, Sony pushed back the movie for about seven months to the July 29, 2011 release. With the new date given, this 3-D movie will be available in theaters a week after Marvel Studios releases "The First Avenger: Captain America" on July 22, 2011.
Sony's decision to move "Smurfs" has been predicted by many earlier since the studio has two feature films coming out on the same day, "Smurfs" and "The Green Hornet". Beside, if it stayed on the date, it will also have to compete with "Tron Legacy" and Warner Bros. Pictures »

When you.ve got a weekend pitting heavyweights like Tron Legacy, The Green Hornet, Yogi Bear and The Smurfs against each other, one is bound to drop out of the race. Sure enough, as reported by Coming Soon, Sony Pictures has decided to move their 3D adaptation of The Smurfs from a December 17th, 2010 release to a summer 2011 date. Sony is considering the July 29th slot in which Papa Smurf and the gang will have no competition. That, of course, is likely to change, but regardless, it was a smart move on Sony.s part to keep the film out of the December 17th free-for-all. Blue clashes with red and green anyway. Other than this new release date, we know very little about the film. Director Raja Gosnell will be taking the little blue guys into a live action setting but no plot details have been revealed. Whether we like it or not it seems that Columbia Pictures are ploughing ahead with the big screen adventure of the lil’ blue men – The Smurfs!
Based on the cartoon which we all know so well, which is in turn based on the cartoon strip by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, 3D Smurfs will be invading our screens next year.
If you can’t wait until 2010 to get your first look at the (depressingly happy) fellas then good news! A new teaser poster has been snapped by eagle-eyed Smurf fansite PvcBlue.com and was picked up on by us from Latino Review. Check out the image below and be afraid, be very afraid!

With Hollywood scooping up as many franchises and rebooting them as possible these days, each of us are bound to see our favorite childhood TV show turned into a multi-million dollar film. For fans of The Smurfs, especially all the members of the Official Smurf Fan Club, that dream is finally coming true.
A few months back, Columbia Pictures announced that they were retooling the 1980s cartoon for not only the big screen, but in 3D as well. Now that some time has passed, the first poster has been revealed, showing us what the new-and-improved smurfs will look like, and if anyone has ever collected the Smurf figures, they know what to expect.
The script comes from the team of David N. Weiss and J. David Stern, who penned the script for other family films such as Shrek 2 and The Rugrats Movie. Behind the director’s chair is Raja Gosnell, »

I personally have been smurfing The Smurfs feature-film adaptation, officially titled The Smurfs 3-D, since the announcement by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation back in January of 2008. The first behind-the-scenes rendered images of the CGI Smurfs came out this past December.
The feature-film Smurfs is being smurfed by Raja Gosnell (Scooby Doo, Slither) and the script was smurfed by David Stern and David Weiss (Shrek 2, Shrek 3). Today we have a smurfy look at the first teaser poster for The Smurfs 3-D, then below that some behind the smurf stills with the unfinished wire animation. Take a smurf for yourself:

The Smurfs, or Les Schtroumpfs as they were called in the Netherlands, have been around since the fantastical mind of Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford (or Peyo as he was known) originally thought them up in 1958. In 1981, Hanna & Barbera started producing The Smurfs animated TV series for »

The first image of a CGI Smurf from Columbia Pictures' upcoming The Smurfs 3D movie has made its way online courtesy of a print ad scanned by Pvc Blue. The Smurf looks exact like how you might imagine a 3D rendering of the little blue guys to look. In fact, it doesn't appear as if Sony's Animation team has tinkered with the iconic design at all. The Smurfs movie will integrate the diminutive Smurfs into a live-action setting and arrive in theaters on December 17, 2010 under the direction of Raja Gosnell. »

Columbia Pictures is developing a CG-adaptation of "The Smurfs", and has released a promo image of the upcoming movie in a magazine. Scanned and posted online by PVCBlue, the first look gives a taste of how the blue-colored character will look like in the feature film, along with a reminder that the movie will come out in theaters holiday 2010.
Little is known about the storyline of this family animation film. Such characters as Papa Smurf, Smurfette and the villainous Gargamel are expected to appear in it. David Stem and David Weiss, the writers of "Shrek 2" and "Shrek the Third", will provide the script alongside scribe Audrey Wells.
The movie that uses a mix of live action and CG will be directed by "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" helmer Raja Gosnell. "The Smurfs" is expected to be released in both 2-D and 3-D theaters across the U.S. on December 17, 2010.

I have certain expectations for how Smurfs should look, and they aren’t that hard to fulfill. The Smurfs I grew up with featured blue skin, prominent noses, and white hat and leggings, which always seemed like a bad idea considering they spent much of their time tramping around a forest. Oh, and of course they were only about three apples tall.
To your left you can see the new version of a CGI Smurf, courtesy Sony Pictures Animation, which is planning to release a 3-D live action Smurfs movie next year. The studio ran this first teaser in a trade publication and the image was picked up by the website pvcblue.com. So what’s the verdict? It’s no radical re-invention, which is fine by me. Personally, I think it looks more or less like how a generic Smurf should (some of the little blue guys had traits that set them apart; e. »

With Raja Gosnell [1] set to direct The Smurfs, a direct-to-dvd Scooby-Doo prequel [2] on the way, and Robert Rodriguez still possibly doing a Jetsons movie, it was only a matter of time before someone else decided to jump on the Hanna-Barbera bandwagon. It appears that person is none other than Brett Ratner... let the ranting begin! According to Variety [3], Ratner will be producing a live-action/CG hybrid feature film based on the '70s animated series Hong Kong Phooey. For those who are too young to remember it (or for those who need their memories refreshed), the show revolves around a talking dog named Penrod Pooch who works as a police station janitor. When he hears about a crime in progress, he runs into a filing cabinet and transforms into Hong Kong Phooey, a superhero with mystical kung fu powers. The main character was voiced by Scatman Crothers. The upcoming movie »

Raja Gosnell will direct The Smurfs, a live-action/animation hybrid for Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation. Now, this news broke yesterday, and we know that we should have reported it then. But frankly the idea of Gosnell, the director responsible for witless, lifeless horror shows like Home Alone 3, both Scooby-Doo movies and Beverly Hills frickin’ Chihuahua, calling the shots on a live-action/animated movie about a bunch of blue midgets with squeaky voices was so terrifying that we shut our eyes and hoped it would go away. But when we opened them this morning, it was still there, and we realised with mounting terror that Gosnell is poised to strike again. There’s even a script in place, with Audrey Wells polishing the previous effort, by Davids Stem and Weiss, while Jordan Kerner will produce the movie."With Raja coming aboard, we now have a brilliant director who »

It's been a while since Papa Smurf, Smurfette, or Gargamel have acted in front of a camera. Luckily, Columbia Pictures and Sony Animation have chosen a veteran live action/animation director for their big comeback.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Raja Gosnell, best known for directing Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, has signed on to direct the upcoming Smurfs movie. Like the 'Scooby-Doo' franchise, as well as Gosnell's recent Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Smurfs will feature live actors interacting with photorealistic, talking creatures (in this case, little blue men and women).
Given his pedigree, Gosnell seems like a natural fit to go with screenwriters J. David Stern and David N. Weiss (Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third), and Audrey Wells (whose screenplay for George of the Jungle, coincidentally, featured a talking ape named Ape). Previous reports linked special effects specialist Colin Brady to the film.
Producer Jordan Kerner spoke enthusiastically about Gosnell, »

Columbia Pictures and Sony Animation have found their man to direct the diminutive Smurfs in their first feature film and he is no stranger to blending CGI creations with live actors and environments. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Raja Gosnell is the man chosen for the Smurf job. He is responsible for directing Scooby Doo!,Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, and Beverly Hills Chihuahua, should feel right at home ordering around his actors to act against invisible little blue people. Producer Jordan Kerner confirmed the number of Smurf heroes in welcoming Raja to the team, "Our three-apple-high heroes are in good hands, and we feel absolutely positively Smurfy to be working with him." Those three heroes would be Papa Smurf, Smurfette, and...? Sorry, I'm not up on my Smurf rosters. It has been a long time. The Smurfs movie is locked into a December 17, 2010 release in 2D and 3D versions. »

Looks like that Smurfs movie is finally going to see the light of day after all. There has been concept art [1] and a logo [2] floating around for a while now, but what the project didn't have was an actual director. At one point, Colin Brady (Everyone's Hero) was attached, but he later parted ways in favour of some movie called The Legend of Santa Claus. (Strange, considering he was also supposed to direct Astro Boy and left that for The Smurfs.) At any rate, it appears that Columbia has now finally found the appropriate helmsman in Raja Gosnell. Who is Raja Gosnell? Why, only the visionary director responsible for such films as Scooby-Doo, Big Momma's House and Beverly Hills Chihuahua! Hey, at least they're not misleading us with regards to the kind of movie we can expect from The Smurfs. It's going to be a combination of CG and live-action, »

Raja Gosnell, the man who let the dogs out in hit 2008 movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua, has been given the job of revamping Belgium's biggest toy export, The Smurfs.
Gosnell will direct the upcoming live-action/animated movie, Smurfs, which is set to hit cinemas over Christmas 2010.
The little blue characters sparked a worldwide collecting trend in the early 1980s after cartoons based on the Pierre Culliford creations became a big hit on TV.
The Smurfs also enjoyed chart success with their human leader Father Abraham.

Raja Gosnell has signed on to direct the live action/animated "Smurfs" movie for Columbia Pictures and Sony Animation. Editor-turned-director, Gosnel is best known for helming "Scooby-Doo" and "Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed," as well as last year's "Beverly Hills Chihuahua." Producer Jordan Kerner has been developing the project for the past seven years. He said: "With Raja coming aboard, we now have a brilliant director who has proven time and again that he has a deft touch in blending the worlds of physical comedy and honest emotion with both live action and photo-real animated characters. Our three-apple-high heroes are in good hands, and we feel absolutely positively Smurfy to be working with him." The logline is being kept under wraps, but the story is expected to feature well-loved characters such as Papa Smurf, Smurfette and the villainous Gargamel. J. David Stem, David N.
