As she gears up for the release of The Tortured Poets Department later this month, Taylor Swift has shared five new playlists on Apple Music comprised of her old songs, angled around the five stages of grief and heartbreak: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.
Swift shared brief audio messages with each playlist, and the first playlist, titled “I love You, It’s Ruining My Life Songs” represents denial. “This is a list of songs about getting so caught up in the idea of something that you have a hard time seeing the red flags,...

“Genres are a funny little concept, aren’t they?” says Linda Martell, a country music pioneer, in the intro to Beyoncé’s “Spaghettii.” “In theory, they have a simple definition that’s easy to understand, but in practice, well, some may feel confined.” Those two sentences perfectly sum up how Beyoncé has subverted expectations in recent years by spreading her wings beyond pop, hip-hop, and R&b to infuse rock, house, and now country music into her own unique style that ultimately really is just “Beyoncé.”

Harry Jowsey and his pro partner Rylee Arnold endeared themselves to Dancing With the Stars viewers this season. The reality TV star’s vulnerability and likability played a key role in his going as far as he did in the competition. The Too Hot to Handle star was an audience favorite not only with viewers at home but also with members of the studio audience. (They could often be heard yelling “Harry!” more frantically than Sheila Fisher ever did on Knots Landing.) After scoring a record high of 30 points this week for their rumba to Taylor Swift’s song “August” and losing out to Alyson Hannigan and Sasha Farber in a dance relay to Swift’s “Shake It Off,” Jowsey and Arnold landed in the bottom three. Then, they were announced as the eliminated duo, narrowly missing advancing to the semi-finals. TV Insider chatted with the couple on the post-show...

Oscar winner Jeremy Irons has joined the cast of Palme d’Or-winning director Bille August’s prestige limited series “The Count of Monte Cristo,” which also stars Sam Claflin.
A sprawling adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel, the English-language series is produced by Mediawan’s banner Palomar, the leading Italian company behind “That Dirty Black Bag” and “The Name of the Rose,” in collaboration with another Mediawan label, France’s Demd Productions. The series’ five-month shoot will wrap in Malta in December, after having lensed in France and Italy.
The show underscores Mediawan’s strategy to pursue prestige scripted projects with strong international potential under its €100 million co-investment agreement signed earlier this year with private equity film Entourage Ventures.
“The Count of Monte Cristo” marks Irons’ third collaboration with August, who directed him in “Night Train to Lisbon” and “The House of Spirits.” A revered Danish filmmaker, August previously won...

Daniel Radcliffe almost made his directorial debut with the documentary “David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived,” about his “Harry Potter” stunt double who was left paralyzed after a tragic on-set accident.
At the London premiere of the HBO and Sky doc, Radcliffe Zoomed in from New York City — where he’s currently starring in the Broadway revival of “Merrily We Roll Along” — for a Q&a with Holmes and director Dan Hartley, in which he revealed that he initially set out to helm the film himself.
“I had always wanted to do something about Dave because I wanted to share him with the world for the person that he is. And Dave’s natural humility meant that he was kind of unsure about that for a while — he wanted to make something broader about stunts in general. But eventually, I sort of convinced him that he should be front and center of it,...

Backed by the Cannes Film Market and Argentina’s Incaa film agency, the 15th Ventana Sur and its much anticipated works in progress sections, Primer Corte and Copia Final, unspool over Nov. 27-Dec. 1 in Buenos Aires.
This year’s crop of films, either in post-production or completed, make scant reference to the region’s brutal historical past, perhaps with the exception of “Pepe” by Nelson Carlo de los Santos Arias, which begins with the capture of drug lord Pablo Escobar who sowed terror and chaos for years in Colombia, or José María Cabral’s “Tiguere,” set in a ‘90s Dominican Republic.
In contrast, they focus more on human interest stories as in the territorial dispute in “El Casero”; family clashes in “November” and “Una casa con dos perros” – also a reference to Argentina’s economic crisis – as well as issues of identity and intergenerational relationships.

Netflix film chief Scott Stuber once ran Universal Studios – today he sometimes feels like the operator of “the AMC 6000” given the volume of movies that Netflix produces and acquires. From Greta Gerwig’s plans for Narnia adaptations to wooing Denzel Washington and Steven Spielberg, Stuber shared Netflix’s vision of film’s future in a wide-ranging Q&a with Variety executive editor Brent Lang that was held Nov. 8 as part of Variety’s Business Managers Elite Breakfast presented by City National Bank.

Though Taylor Swift's famous female friends, widely known as the "Squad," might be on everyone's radar, the superstar's low-key friendship with long-time music collaborator Jack Antonoff is the unsung hero of the 12-time Grammy-winning singer-songwriter's tight-knit inner circle. The two music geniuses first crossed paths in 2012 at the MTV EMAs, and that chance encounter led to their first collaboration, "Sweeter than Fiction" - a track featured on the soundtrack for the 2013 motion picture "One Chance."
That was just the beginning of a beautiful partnership - both in their personal and professional lives. Since then, the dynamic musical duo has worked together on numerous hit records, including "1989," "Lover," and "Midnights," having created some of the biggest fan-favorites, including "Getaway Car," "August," "Cruel Summer," "Anti-Hero," and many more.

News broke on April 10 that Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn had quietly called it quits this spring after six years together. Though the pair were together for a long time, both were mostly tight-lipped about their connection and life together - except, that is, when it came to Swift's songwriting.
The pair first connected while Swift was working on her 2017 album "Reputation," and fans believe quite a few songs on the record are about her then-new boyfriend. Many of the songs on her "Lover" album, released in 2019, are all about falling deeper in love with her longtime beau. Her single "Lover," which includes quite a few wedding references, even sparked major engagement rumors for the pair.
When Swift released "Folklore" and "Evermore" in 2020, not only were a few of the songs about her romance with Alwyn, but she teamed up with her partner to write some of them as well.

Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” concert film premiered Wednesday night to an enthusiastic crowd of celebrities, fans and of course Taylor’s team, with the star of the film in attendance. As one of the first to see the film, TheWrap has the scoop on which songs from the wildly popular tour made the film, and which songs were cut.
After making speeches in multiple auditoriums for separate audiences, Swift, clad in a sky blue floral-patterned dress (probably in theme for “1989 (Taylor’s Version) with her hair pinned up like the signature bob she had when that album first came out), sat back to enjoy the experience in one of the IMAX screening rooms with her background vocalists and publicist Tree Paine.
The documentary runs 2 hours and 48 minutes, slightly shorter than Swift’s three-hour setlist and performance, which she has brought to 17 of the United States so far in addition to Mexico.

TikTok has been filled with fans romantically spinning their pets to Taylor Swift’s “August” in recent weeks. Now, Penn Badgley and Kevin Bacon have gotten in on the action, sharing their own version of the “August” TikTok trend.
In the clip, posted by Badgley, the You actor runs through a hallway where he finds Bacon and the pair dramatically twirl around (the face Bacon makes is A+ acting material). The TikTok was likely recorded at the same time Bacon appeared on Badgley’s podcast Podcrushed in an episode that debuted earlier this week.

Pj Harvey’s I Inside the Old Year Dying opens with a whining guitar, which serves as a kind of warm embrace for fans of the often abrasive alt-rock that defined the singer-songwriter’s early work. The album abounds in curious and compelling guitar tones, stretching and mutating across “Autumn Term” and gathering like a smoky haze on “August.” Sometimes, the guitar work plays up the album’s contrasts: The title track, for one, is driven by a triumphant acoustic guitar while an electric one howls and snarls in the background.
Perhaps most reminiscent of albums like 1993’s Rid of Me is the maelstrom of dissonance that Harvey and frequent collaborator John Parish fire up on the album’s thrilling closing track, “A Noiseless Noise,” after a fake-out of twinkling guitar and bird chirps. But despite acting as a delivery system for arresting six-string rockers, I Inside the Old Year...

Season 1 of the Prime Video series, adapted from Jenny Han’s best-selling book trilogy, watched Belly visit Cousins Beach once more, but she has glowed up quite a bit in the time she spent away. Both Fisher brothers noticed, and a love triangle between the three of them ensued. Things got even more complicated when the boys discovered their mother Susannah’s cancer had relapsed. After a chaotic and dramatic debutante ball, she promised her sons that she would do a trial for treatment.

At a weekend getaway otherwise populated entirely by fortysomethings, 29-year-old Julie (Renate Reinsve) is subjected to some amateur analysis from a well-meaning elder. “Being young today is different,” the other woman observes, noting the increased pressure millennials face in daily life. “They have no time to think, there’s always something on the screen.” It’s the kind of generalization, notionally sympathetic but condescending, that members of the so-called anxious generation are used to hearing — irksome because there’s a kernel of truth to it, perhaps, but mostly because it’s way off the mark for many. Time to think isn’t the problem, time to decide is.
At first, Joachim Trier’s elegant, fine-grained character study “The Worst Person in the World” threatens to be a similarly lofty essay on the millennial condition, beginning as it does with an omniscient voiceover that talks us through various ill-fated or ill-considered...

Julie (Renate Reinsve) is a smart Norwegian med school student in her late 20s who looks as much like Dakota Johnson as Dakota Johnson ever has. Director Joaquin Trier underscores her allure as we first meet her, poised on a balcony above downtown Oslo in a backless cocktail dress, so strongly that he even racks focus on the city behind her until it’s just a blur. She has the world at her feet, and the rat-a-tat narration can hardly keep up with her roiling sense of youthful possibility. But as anyone who’s ever wasted an hour aimlessly scrolling through Netflix knows all too well, having too many options can keep you from committing to any one of them; the bigger the menu, the harder it is to feel like you ordered the right meal.

Every Oscar night is always rife with history-making twists, but early in the 93rd annual ceremony on Sunday night, a rare two-for-one win made double history. In accepting the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” hair department head Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson, star Viola Davis’ personal hairstylist, became the first Black women to win an Oscar for makeup and hairstyling. Neal and Wilson first made history in March when they became the first Black women to be nominated in the category.
Alongside fellow winner Sergio Lopez-Rivera, Davis’ personal makeup artist, the trio happily accepted the honor for their big screen August Wilson adaptation. Backstage at the in-person ceremony, the three artisans were still giddy and more than thrilled to talk about what the history-making win means for the industry going forward.

The Amazon Echo has change the tech world in a lot of big ways. It popularized smart speakers, set the bar for voice recognition and AI, and normalized the concept of talking to a gadget. Amazon has also committed to improving the Echo, and making Alexa (its smart assistant) even more capable.
While the Echo is great on its own, connecting it to compatible smart-home accessories makes it even more powerful. Suddenly, you can control your garage door, or make your home more secure without touching a button or reaching for your phone.

We've been waiting on this film for a couple of years now, the trailer in some version popping up now and again. And certainly there's no better time to release a film about a woman trapped in her house, then when we're all (or at least a lot of us) still more or less trapped. This riff on Rear Window certainly sports a terrific cast of acting talent, a familiar but still plausible and solid premise, and a different enough location (a three-story opulant house as oppose to a tiny studio apartment) to afford some key differences. Directed by Joe Wright, adapted by Tracey Letts (August: Osage County), starring Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, Gary Oldman, Jennifer Jason Lee, Brian Tyree Henry, and Anthony...

Taylor Swift returned to the Grammys stage for the first time in five years on Sunday night. In honor of her six nominations for Folklore, including album of the year, the 31-year-old singer was joined by her Folklore collaborators, Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff on stage for an epic performance. In addition to performing her Grammy-nominated song "Cardigan," she also performed "August" and "Willow" for the first time live. The performance was basically a full-fledged music video as Swift, Dessner, and Antonoff performed in an enchanting, moss-covered house. Seriously, can we live in this performance?
The last time Swift hit the Grammys stage was back in 2016, when she took home album of the year for 1989, making her the first woman to win the honor twice for her solo recordings. It has certainly been a whirlwind year for Swift. In addition to releasing her chart-topping Folklore album in July 2020, she later surprised fans with another album,...

What can you say about a Grammy Night that begins with Harry Styles in a feather boa and ends with Billie Eilish saying, “What’s up, Ringo?” Just this: They should always do the Grammys this way. Last night was the best Grammy show ever, by an absurd margin — nearly four hours focused on artists doing their own songs, every performance excellent. No audience, and barely any awards. No stupid comedy bits. No presenters reading scripted banter. No Zoom screens. No “let’s ride the subway with Sting” montage. Just music.

“Music’s Biggest Night,” as the Grammy Awards are known, went off without a hitch on Sunday night (March 14). Hosted by Trevor Noah, and produced by a new team led by “James Corden” executive producer Ben Winston, there was an expectation of a more innovative approach and look to an awards show, and the Grammys did not disappoint. Featuring an indoor in-the-round set-up, not unlike Jools Holland’s in the U.K., artists were able to watch each other as they performed — which, considering the lack of live music for the last year, was a rare luxury afforded to the few and mighty. In addition, elaborate pre-taped performances allowed for the spectacle one would want from a music show.

New Taylor Swift album, new conspiracy theories. Just like when Swift unexpectedly dropped her eighth studio album, Folklore, in July 2020, Swifties are scrambling to figure out the meaning behind the new songs on her ninth album, Evermore. In her Dec. 10 Instagram post announcing the album release, Swift explained that Evermore - like Folklore - was inspired by both "imaginary/not imaginary tales," though of course, it's impossible to know which is which. One song that has fans scratching their heads is "Dorothea," the album's eighth track. During a Q&a before the music video premiere for "Willow," Swift told fans that she considers Dorothea a classmate of Betty, Inez, and James from Folklore, but Swifties have a different theory.
