Fumi Nikaido could be one of several “Shōgun” stars who go on to earn Emmy nominations for their career-best work in the FX series.
Adapted from James Clavell‘s 1975 historical book of the same name, Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks’ limited series follows multiple factions all vying for control over the five Regents in Japan at the end of the 16th century. Meanwhile, a British sailor (Cosmo Jarvis) begins a brand new life after becoming shipwrecked in Japan and entering the service of Hiroyuki Sanada‘s Lord Yoshii Toranaga.
Jarvis and Sanada are both competing for lead actor nominations and so, too, is Anna Sawai. Nikaido, meanwhile, is one of several supporting players who are looking for an Emmy citation for their work on the show. Barbie came into the 2024 Grammys with 11 nominations and went home with three of them.
Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell won song of the year for “What Was I Made For?” Their fellow contenders included Lana Del Rey’s “A&w,” Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero,” Jon Batiste’s “Butterfly,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night,” also from Barbie, Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers,” Sza’s “Kill Bill” and Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire.”
During her acceptance speech, Eilish gave a special shout-out to Barbie director Greta Gerwig for “making the best movie of the year,” seemingly referencing the fact that the filmmaker was snubbed for the best director category at the Oscars this year.
In a conversation with reporters in the press room after their win, Eilish explained that she and her brother had hit a bit of a roadblock with their songwriting before getting the opportunity to write for the film’s soundtrack.

Way back in (checks notes) July last year, we reported on the Emmy nominations, noting that the strikes could delay it. Welp, delay it they did, and the 2023 ceremony has just happened in Los Angeles on Monday night. The ceremony, hosted by actor and comedian Anthony Anderson, had little reference to the strikes, but did dig back into TV history given that it was the 75th ceremony. Recent history, though, was more on voters' minds as Beef, Succession and The Bear continued their small screen awards domination.
Succession and The Bear nabbed six trophies each across acting, directing and writing categories, while Beef took home five. Other winners included Jennifer Coolidge (for The White Lotus) and Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story's Niecy Nash-Betts.
Here are the main winners…

The Oscar chances for Best Costume Design frontrunners “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer” were bolstered by their nominations for the 26th Costume Designer Guild Awards on January 4. The Cdga will be held February 21, 2024, at Neuehouse Hollywood.
While “Barbie” was nominated in the sci-fi/fantasy category — and should prevail over “Haunted Mansion,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” — the other four compete in the period category against “Napoleon,” with “Poor Things” as the clear favorite here.
Meanwhile, the contemporary contenders include “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield,” and “Saltburn.” None is expected to make the final Oscar cut, but “Saltburn” is the flashy favorite here.
In terms of the Oscar race, it looks like a feminist battle between Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster “Barbie” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.

There’s something almost mythical about the great bands of the ’70s. The era had just the right mix of freedom, turmoil, changing mores, and freely available drugs to power some truly epic albums (and behavior). But because there is such a collective sense of what a rock band romance looks like in real life, it’s pretty tricky to write one that feels fresh and new within the context of the time — and the history of Fleetwood Mac.
But “Daisy Jones and the Six” — adapted from Taylor Reid Jenkins’ novel — not only adapts to its setting but thrives within it. This is in no small part due to the Prime Video series committing to the most organic approach possible to music and the time period. Titular frontwoman Daisy (Riley Keough), troubled lead guitarist Billy (Sam Claflin), and the rest of the Six needed to feel like a band, so...

This story about Riley Keough first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama and Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine. The interview was conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike began.
The beginning of 2021 was a rough time for Riley Keough. A few years removed from her breakthrough roles in Andrea Arnold’s film “American Honey” and Steven Soderbergh’s series “The Girlfriend Experience,” she was about to codirect her first film, “War Pony,” with Gina Gammell, and she had a starring role as a ’70s rock star in “Daisy Jones & the Six,” the hotly anticipated limited series adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s hit novel.

Riley Keough says that following her mother Lisa Marie Presley’s death and the estate settlement that ensued, “there was a lot of chaos in every aspect of our lives” but that ultimately, all her grandmother Priscilla Presley “wants is to love and protect Graceland and the Presley family and the legacy.”
In a cover story that was completed ahead of the SAG-AFTRA strike, which began on July 13, the Daisy Jones & the Six actress opened up to Vanity Fair about the last year of her life, including a surrogacy and new daughter, treating her Lyme disease, as well as the impact of her mother’s untimely death and the “panic” around the transfer of the Presley estate that followed.
The Emmy-nominated actress addressed for the first time the outcome of the Presley estate battle, which saw Keough named the sole trustee in a settlement after grandmother Priscilla Presley surrendered control.

Riley Keough, the grandchild of Elvis Presley, today was named the sole trustee of the estate of her late mother, Lisa Marie Presley.
The appointment was approved during a hearing Friday before Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Lynn Healey Scaduto.
Priscilla Presley had filed a petition to challenge the validity of her late daughter Lisa Marie’s will in January. The legal action disputed a 2016 amendment to Lisa Marie’s will that excised Priscilla as trustee of the estate. Priscilla Presley’s attorneys said she only became aware of the “purported 2016 amendment” after Lisa Marie’s death. Lawyers also contend the amendment was never delivered to their client during Lisa Marie’s lifetime
The amendment removes Priscilla and Lisa Marie’s former business manager, Barry Siegel, as co-trustees and replaces them with Lisa Marie’s eldest children Riley and Benjamin Keough. The latter died in 2020.

Moments after Daisy Jones & The Six received nine Emmy nominations on Wednesday morning, executive producers Scott and Lauren Neustadter fielded a congratulatory phone call from Reese Witherspoon.
“She was so thrilled for everybody,” Lauren Neustadter told Deadline of Witherspoon, who produced the series through her Hello Sunshine banner. “She’s been such a part of all of this and blazes the trail that makes all of this possible. We’re very grateful for her.”
Daisy Jones & The Six is competing in the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series Or Movie category, and it also earned first-time nominations for stars Riley Keough and Camila Morrone.
Keough told Deadline she had her phone on Do Not Disturb when nominations were announced, but once she received enough phone calls to override the feature, she told Deadline she “had a feeling that something happened.”

Critics’ Conversation: Despite Heartening Inclusions, Emmy Voters Struggle to Broaden Their Horizons
Daniel Fienberg: The Television Academy has done it again! And I’m not sure I mean that as a compliment.
I’m happy to see two of my favorite comedies of the past year, Succession and The White Lotus, dominating the nominations. On the drama side.
And I’m glad to see Emmy voters finally recognized that my absolute favorite show of last year, Reservation Dogs, exists. Or exists enough to receive one nomination in the sound category.
And how nice that Emmy voters also noticed Dead Ringers. For cinematography. But somehow left Rachel Weisz out of the Lead Actress in a Limited Series category.
Once again, it was an Emmy nomination slate that suggests voters watch a half-dozen shows, which allows dozens more to slip through the cracks. Nowhere is that clearer than the supporting categories, where nearly every actor from The White Lotus got nominated (Nearly… sorry...

It’s that magical time of the year when we call attention to excellence in the entertainment space by announcing the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Nominations! The yearly celebration finds HBO having its run of the list with nominations for shows like The Last of Us, Succession, and The White Lotus topping the charts. Regarding laughs, shows like Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Only Murders in the Building, Ted Lasso, Wednesday, and more square off in the Outstanding Comedy Series category. Meanwhile, the limited series category is heating up,...

Fans of the Amazon Prime original series Daisy Jones & the Six (which premiered in March) know that it’s not just the Fleetwood Mac-inspired music or the real-life Sunset Strip shooting locations that set the tone for the show. It’s also the ‘70s fashion that gives it a distinct sense of time and place. The fringed vests, peasant dresses, flared pants and crochet tops worn by the women leads on the show also communicate important aspects of the characters as their stories develop.

Of course, it probably comes as no surprise to many viewers that much of Daisy Jones’ (Riley Keough) bohemian style is inspired by Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks.

We’ve all made the “Cop Rock” jokes. The Steven Bochco musical drama, which premiered in fall 1990, was a big swing: marrying original music with procedural storytelling. It was a colossal flop that we still talk about three decades later, and a reminder that musicals are hard.
Music has been a part of the TV landscape going back to the 1950s and shows like “Your Hit Parade.” But few series have successfully integrated regular music performances into their storytelling: “The Monkees” and “The Partridge Family” worked in the 1960s and ’70s. “Fame” did it in the early ’80s. And then “Cop Rock” scared people off the concept.
The 1990s animation boom incorporated music in shows like “The Simpsons” and “Animaniacs.” But not until the 21st century did scripted series really figure out how to make musical numbers work as part of the narrative. “Flight of the Conchords” did it with satiric tracks,...

A version of this story about Scott Neustadter and “Daisy Jones and the Six” first appeared in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Scott Neustadter wasn’t born when the rock ‘n’ roll scene depicted in “Daisy Jones & the Six” was taking place in Los Angeles in the late 1960s through the mid ’70s, and neither were most of the cast and creators of the limited series on Amazon’s Prime Video. But Neustadter and his writing partner Michael H. Weber, who’d written “500 Days of Summer,” “The Spectacular Now” and “The Disaster Artist” before they developed “Daisy Jones,” had to become experts in the era they recreated for the series based on Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel.
Did they get it all right? Of course not. (Read on for some nit-picking from somebody who is old enough to have been there.) But for the most part,...

Daisy Jones & The Six star Sam Claflin arrived at his final audition to play fictional 1970s rock star Billy Dunne without, by his own admission, the strongest grasp on the type of musician he was expected to embody.
His future showrunners had already taken a shine to the dimpled British actor, as had music supervisor Frankie Pine and producer Hello Sunshine’s president Lauren Neustadter, but one last hurdle remained before he could land the male lead in Amazon’s hot adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel of the same name. He had to sing live for the project’s music producers, Blake Mills and Tony Berg. Pine gave Claflin a shot of moonshine to soothe his nerves. The actor entered the storied halls of Sound City Studios, the Van Nuys building where Mick Fleetwood first met Lindsey Buckingham, and proceeded to kind of blow it. “I had prepared Elton John’s ‘Your Song,...

Whether it’s because of Covid shutdowns, reboots, spin-offs or a gap between seasons, more and more actors in Emmy-eligible shows are coming to their roles after much delay. While this could create financial or scheduling concerns, it also gives the talent more time to ruminate on the part, new or old.
More often, actors returned to characters they previously inhabited. Alan Cumming, nominated three times for playing the slippery Eli Gold on the CBS drama “The Good Wife,” reprised the role as a guest star for the final season of its spin-off, Paramount+’s “The Good Fight.”
Adam DeVine, who played frequent foil Bumper Allen in the “Pitch Perfect” movies, became the lead of the Peacock spinoff, “Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin.” And Adam Scott, Emmy-nominated for his performance in “Severance” last year, joined other cast members from the Starz comedy “Party Down” for the cater-waiter comedy’s third season,...

As we inch toward the Emmy nomination announcement on July 12, one category that has been interesting to try to predict is Movie/Limited Actress. As there is no division within this category pertaining specifically to genre, we end up with quite the diversity of performances. There are 35 actresses listed on Gold Derby’s combined odds and rankings. Of those, at least a dozen of them have a legit shot at scoring a nomination.
The reigning champion of this category is Amanda Seyfried for her performance in 2022’s “The Dropout” (Hulu). Seyfried also won the Golden Globe earlier this year. So, who is in contention to pick up the baton for 2023?
Some of this year’s top contenders and their current combined odds include:
SEEJessica Chastain predicted to follow her ‘George and Tammy’ SAG Award with her first Emmy Jessica Chastain (“George and Tammy”): 37/10 – Chastain has been having herself a Year.

HanWay Films has boarded The One, an erotic thriller starring Melissa Barrera and Nicholas Hoult and will launch sales at the Cannes Film Festival.
The project comes from writer-director team Kevin Armento and Jaki Bradley and is billed as “a nightmarish horror about the romantic and psychological warfare waged by our beloved popular entertainment — and also begs the question… are we, the viewers, complicit?”
Barrera, who’s coming off box office horror hit Scream VI, leads the cast opposite the Emmy and Screen Actors Guild Award-nominated Hoult. Barrera plays Taylor, whose last-ditch effort to find love by becoming a contestant on a reality dating show begins to feel terrifyingly real as she becomes a finalist. Amidst an opulent beachfront setting, fairy-tale dates and champagne, “pursuit turns into obsession and rivalry turns into treachery as reality itself blurs.”
HanWay Films is handling worldwide sales, with WME Independent and UTA co-repping the film for North America.

Scream VI was named best movie on Sunday night at the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards, which pivoted at the last minute from live to pretaped due to the writers strike,
The film also won best fight for Courteney Cox (as Gale Weathers) and the killer Ghostface, the latter of whom accepted both awards via pretaped video.
Accepting best movie, Ghostface quipped that there is finally an answer to the question, “What is your favorite scary movie?” — a reference to a classic line of dialogue from the franchise.
The Last of Us also was a big winner, taking three awards, including best show. Star Pedro Pascal was named best hero, while he and Bella Ramsey also were named best duo. Stranger Things won two awards.
The show was held amid the ongoing writers strike, which led host Drew Barrymore to drop out in a show of support for the striking scribes.

Patricia Arquette is having a “Severance” reunion with a noir twist — in a show you probably haven’t heard of.
The Emmy winner collaborates again with “Severance” and “Escape at Dannemora” director Ben Stiller for Apple TV+ dark comedy “High Desert.” Arquette plays Peggy, an on-again-off-again addict who decides to make a new start after the death of her beloved mother, with whom she lived in the small desert town of Yucca Valley, California, and makes a life-changing decision to become a private investigator.
Matt Dillon, Christine Taylor, Brad Garrett, Weruche Opia, Bernadette Peters, Rupert Friend, and Keir O’Donnell also star in the series. “High Desert” is created and written by Nancy Fichman (“Grace and Frankie”), Katie Ford (“Miss Congeniality”), and Jennifer Hoppe (“Nurse Jackie”), who all also serve as executive producers. Both Stiller and Arquette serve as executive producers.
Jay Roach (“Meet the Parents”) directs all eight episodes of the half-hour series.

Both Stiller and Arquette serve as executive producers.
Jay Roach (“Meet the Parents”) directs all eight episodes of the half-hour series.

Luigi is the man. The green-capped, younger brother of Mario—as well as the one with the far more luxuriant mustache—jumps higher, runs faster, and looks plain cooler while doing it. This is a truth that’s universally acknowledged by gamers of a certain age. For if you were a younger sibling growing up sometime in the ‘90s or late ‘80s, you were always Player 2. You were always Luigi.
I was one such player, the kid brother of a sister who adored Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3 on the Nes. There were thus many an afternoon spent waiting for my turn to play as the Italian plumber who’s dressed like it’s always St. Patrick’s Day. However, beginning with the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. 2 in 1986, Luigi has low-key been designed as the better character with higher and further leaps, albeit less balance and traction in his landings.

“Daisy Jones & the Six” executive producer and director Nzingha Stewart had a tall order in helming the second half of the limited series, but she took inspiration from a surprising place when it came to tackling these final episodes. James Ponsoldt directed the first five episodes of the adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel, but whereas the first half of the show charts the band’s rise, Stewart’s episodes find them on top of the world. That dichotomy is reflected in Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas,” and Stewart told TheWrap in a recent interview she kept going back to the gangster drama for inspiration.
“I felt like in ‘Goodfellas,’ it sort of worked like two movies. The first half of the movie, there’s a sense of innocence that they all have, and the second half, they’re as successful as they can be,” Stewart said. “They have the the drugs,...
