The Notable Films of 2010: Part Five

23 December 2009 10:10 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

Is Idris Elba Playing Jimmy Stewart To Thomas Ikimi's Hitchcock? Fantastic New Poster Art For Legacy Says Yes.

1 December 2009 8:54 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Is it fair to compare a young, second time film maker with one of cinema's all time greats?  No, of course it's not.  But if Thomas Ikimi's ultra low budget debut Limbo wasn't enough to convince you that he has aspersions towards making the same sort of high concept thrillers that made Hitchcock famous, well, a quartet of concept posters for his sophomore effort are here to make that point clear.  Titled Legacy, the film stars The Wire's Idris Elba in the lead and the just-released poster art has that classic Saul Bass influence all over it.

Here's the press release that went out went we first covered the film back in May:

Black Camel Pictures are delighted to announce that on May 11th 2009 they began principal photography on their new Us set psychological thriller Legacy starring Idris Elba (Obsessed, The Wire) who also Executive Produces. Legacy was »

The other day we premiered the first images and official synopses from Focus Features Greenberg, The Eagle of the Ninth, and Somewhere.  Now, thanks to Focus sending out a press release, we have an idea when some of them are getting released.

The film stars Ben Stiller.  After that we’re getting Thomas Balmes Babies on April 16th and director Anton Corbijn’s The American on September. 1st.  That’s the George Clooney assassin film.  Sometime in the third quarter will be Kevin Macdonald’s Roman adventure The Eagle of the Ninth, and in November It’s Kind of a Funny Story gets released.  The big question mark is Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere, which still doesn’t have a release date.

10 Most Underrated Young Actresses

22 October 2009 1:48 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

Can the media alter the public's perception of an actor? I believe so - that's why we have the likes of Megan Fox hugging the headlines and getting the covers of men's magazines, while a lot of more talented young actresses could not even manage to get featured and have interviews. If you think about it, what has she done in the movies to deserve so much publicity and attention? - - -

That maybe so and yes, I agree when others say 'she'll not last another year - others will soon take over'. There are those who may say 'Agents and talent managers always take care of their wards - that's why stars have a public image and a private one'. »
