Warner Keeps Fantasy Going For 'Beautiful Creatures'

1 December 2009 4:16 AM, PST | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

Will new "gothic" fantasy novel adaptation Beautiful Creatures capture the teen crowds in the same fashion as Harry Potter and emo schoolgirl favourite Twilight?

Richard Lagravenese, director of P.S. I Love You and Freedom Writers, plans to find out, as he takes on the direction of the story of a cursed and confused girl in the Southern town of Gatlin who makes a supernatural connection with a mysterious boy she meets.

Beautiful Creature is the first of a 5 part series written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl and definitely vibes the whole star-crossed-lovers, magical-mystery formula which seems to be consistently successful at the moment.

With a largely positive reaction to the book on its release, Beautiful Creatures may turn out to be the hot new fantasy we need to watch. What say you? Comments in the box below.

Richard Lagravenese Adapting 'Beautiful Creatures' Novel

30 November 2009 8:30 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Every other week until Deathly Hallows hits theaters we'll probably be hearing about some new potential Harry Potter replacement. Even though there are still two more years until the final Potter movie arrives, studios are starting to setup projects that to fill the "coming-of-age wizard" genre that will be left open once that franchise comes to an end. Variety reports that Warner Brothers has hired Richard Lagravenese, of P.S. I Love You and Freedom Writers, to write and direct an adaptation of Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl's novel Beautiful Creatures. The book just hit shelves and is about a young witch named Lena Duchannes. Beautiful Creatures sounds much more like Twilight than it does Harry Potter. In the first book, apathetic high-school student Ethan Wate meets and becomes bewitched by Lena Duchannes, a 16-year-old whose family has moved to the small South Carolina town where he lives. Is ‘Beautiful Creatures’ the Next Twilight?

30 November 2009 7:55 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Warner Bros may be making the big bucks by adapting the Harry Potter series into eight blockbuster films but, like every major studio, they’re watching major money go to Summit Entertainment with their Twilight saga.  The Twilight Saga: New Moon has made $474 million worldwide in just 10 days, snatching records from WB’s recent hits The Dark Knight and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in the process.

I’ve already listed the films given the kiss of death by being called “the next Harry Potter,” but now the tables are turned as WB hurries to tap the young female market.  Twilight envy might explain why the studio has optioned “Beautiful Creatures,” a similar supernatural tale of teen romance.

The first book (out of a planned five), from authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, officially hits shelves tomorrow (December 1) and centers on a small town boy who meets the girl »

Warner Bros. on the hunt for the next 'Twilight': Is it 'Beautiful Creatures'?

30 November 2009 3:50 PM, PST | EW - Hollywood Insider.com | See recent EW.com - Hollywood Insider news »

Tomorrow marks the publication of Beautiful Creatures, a young adult novel from Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl that centers on a mortal high school boy living in Gatlin, South Carolina and his love for a very strange girl with some mysterious powers. Her name is Lena Duchannes and she's trying her best to conceal her powers. Sound intriguing? Well the publishing world has been very kind to Beautiful Creatures with glowing advance reviews.  (Little, Brown, the publishers behind Twilight are behind this book.) Hollywood has also been interested in it for some time and the book's rights have just been optioned by Warner Bros. »

He Said – He Said … Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire

20 November 2009 7:18 AM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire is the story of an overweight 16-year-old who is physically and emotionally abused. I know, it sounds like an after school special, not a potential Oscar-winning film. Lee Daniels (Shadowboxer) directs his second film which stars Gabourey Sidibe, Mo’Nique, Paula Patton and Mariah Carey. As always, it’s better to read reviews if you are planning on seeing this film. With all of the “said” articles, nothing is off limits. Plot spoilers, big twists and the ending are all fair game for us to talk about. Enough jibber jabber, onto the film Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire with he (Jeff Bayer) and he (Nick Allen).

Bayer’s Tsr – 8/10

Allen’s Tsr – 5/10

Bayer Said

I knew you were desperate for someone else to see this film. I also knew you gave it a 5/10. Plus, I knew it was about a big girl, »

'Amelia,' Hilary Swank: Finding a movie role to fit the face

30 October 2009 3:38 PM, PDT | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

Hilary Swank plays the legendary aviator Amelia Earhart in Amelia. And although, as I said in my review, the movie is earthbound, the choice of Swank in the title role demonstrates sky-clear thinking. (Okay, that's enough of the windblown aeronautical metaphors.) Physically, the two are twins, and not just because Swank has been coiffed in Earhart's striking, trademark, short-haired tousle, a variation on Winnie the Pooh's Christopher Robin. Rather, both women project a seductive androgyny-a boyishness that nevertheless leaves no doubt about the sexuality of the woman wearing the trousers. True, Swank first found fame as a girl living as »

tMF Spotlight: Hunter Parrish is more than just a pretty boy!

30 July 2009 4:16 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

o each his own. That's the second time I said that. Anyway, I'm referring to this young actor's reaction about the casting of High School Musical, the lead role eventually went to Zac Efron, and as they say, the rest is history.... But let us look back at one of the actors considered for the part of Troy. He's currently featured at GQ and it seems he got a lot of great stuff up his sleeves...

[The part of Troy] was down to five guys and then I got offered a part in this amazing Robin Williams movie. And I thought to myself: Fly to Vancouver and meet the director for this Robin Williams movie, or stay and finish the auditions for the Disney Channel movie? So I didn't even go to the last audition. I heard a rumor that I was their favorite, but I never made it to the end. I mean »

Minnie Driver Is Hilary Swank's Best Friend

27 January 2009 7:39 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Heads up: Hilary Swank is once again going to be playing a down-on-her-luck, lower class gal who decides to take a stand and change things around here. The role she played in Million Dollar Baby and Freedom Writers will probably be pruned a little for Betty Anne Waters, given that it's a real person she's playing. But either way, Minnie Driver has signed on for a role that's bound to be thankless, playing Swank's best friend "with a wild-party past." THR is reporting that Driver has signed on to the project, which Tony Goldwyn (The Last Kiss) will direct. The real story it's based on is truly fascinating. Waters was inspired to earn a law degree when her brother was convicted of a crime he didn't commit, and spent the next decade working to free him. Better than going into law for the money, that's for sure. The movie starts »
