Terror Tidbits (Fango #290): The Wolfman: Hair Today, Gore Tomorrow

22 December 2009 10:00 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

The beast is back, and he’s staring Fangoria right in the eye. It’s May 2008, and the end of a long day at England’s Pinewood Studios, where your correspondent has been given a tantalizing behind-the-scenes tour of Universal’s latest attempt to mine its classic horror back catalog, following the successful revamp of The Mummy. After visiting various sets and interviewing some of the cast and crew of The Wolfman, we have decamped to a windowless room to chat with makeup legend Rick Baker about the task of turning star Benicio Del Toro into the eponymous monster.

Midway through our chat, the lights go out, plunging the room into total darkness. “Stay calm,” instructs the film’s unit publicist, “it’s just a problem with the fuse.” But something is afoot. Suddenly, there’s movement at a door, and a large shape enters the room. As our eyes become accustomed to the gloom, »

Is 'Captain America' Going To Great Britain?

21 December 2009 9:06 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

The upcoming Captain America movie could be shot in the UK, according to Coventry Telegraph’s The Geek Files. Is this a curious case of outsourcing, or a complete non-story?

The question arose after a California-based props maker hinted the movie will be shot in Great Britain. The Geek Files reports that Gregg Bilson Jr., the owner/operator of Independent Studio Services, recently tweeted, "Marvel films is considering filming Captain America in the UK, Wtf!"

Wtf, indeed. It’s not uncommon for films to be shot somewhere other than on-location, but one about a superhero clad in the American flag staged anywhere except the United States? That seems like treason on Marvel’s part. Well, maybe not.

As comic book fans know, the Sentinel of Liberty’s tale begins during the Second World War in Europe, meaning Great Britain is a potential setting. Marvel has also stated that The First Avenger: Captain America »

Marvel 'considering filming Captain America in UK'

With Iron Man 2 set for release next May and Kenneth Branagh's Thor ready to start filming in January, Marvel's next superhero project to get off the ground will be The First Avenger: Captain America.

A year after the film comes out in 2011, the stars-and-stripes supersoldier will go on to appear in team-up film The Avengers.

Director Joe Johnston recently joined the Captain America project after finishing work on horror remake The Wolfman, due out in February. No casting has been announced yet, though fans (and The Geek Files itself) have been putting forward lists of possible contenders.

But could it be filmed in the UK?...

In the latest tidbit, California-based props maker Independent Studio Services has hinted that the movie will be shot in Britain.

The company's owner/operator Gregg Bilson Jr tweeted: "Marvel films is considering filming Captain America in the UK, Wtf!"

A claim that The First Avenger: Captain America could be filmed in the UK has prompted speculation that Marvel character Union Jack features in the script. According to Comic Book Movie, an operator of Independent Studio Services posted a message on Twitter which read: "Marvel films is considering filming Captain America in the UK, Wtf!" Marvel president Kevin Fiege has already been quoted as saying that the movie "will be one of the most international films Marvel Studios has done". In addition to rumours that Union Jack, also known as James Montgomery Falsworth, might therefore appear in the film, (more) »

'Iron Man 2' And Other Marvel Movies Are Successful Due To Comic Book Writers, Says Joe Quesada

18 December 2009 1:13 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Following the fantastically received "Iron Man 2" trailer, it's clear that the moviegoing public is enthused about Marvel Studios' upcoming film slate.

While the folks on the DC Comics side of the aisle have had plenty of success through "The Dark Knight" and hope to achieve similar results with "Jonah Hex" and "Green Lantern," many eyes are understandably on Marvel's ambitious plan to link "Iron Man," "Thor" and "The First Avenger: Captain America" together in 2012's "The Avengers."

In an interview with Comic Book Resources, Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Joe Quesada— who, alongside creators like Brian Michael Bendis, has had a notable level of involvement in Marvel's movie projects — spoke about what he believes separates Marvel Studios' output from other comic book films. In essence, it has everything to do with the comic book creators themselves.

"But the beauty of the Marvel films now, is that guys who work in comics are involved, »

"First Avenger: Captain America" - May 2011

15 December 2009 6:58 AM, PST | SneakPeek | See recent SneakPeek news »

"Chronicles Of Narnia" writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely continue developing a screenplay for Marvel Studios' "First Avenger: Captain America", to be directed by Joe "The Wolfman" Johnston and produced by Marvel's Kevin Feige.

Created in 1941 by artist Jack "King" Kirby and writer Joe Simon for Timely Comics, 'Captain America' is the heroic alter ego of 'Steve Rogers', rejected by the Ww II-era Us Army for being too sickly, only to volunteer for a steroidal experiment that turns him into a star-spangled beefcake super-hero.

Paired with an indestructible red white and blue shield, Cap becomes a patriotic symbol of the Allies' war effort, fighting his arch-nemesis, the Third Reich's homicidal 'Red Skull'.

Marvel Studios' upcoming self-financed slate of comic book-to-films including "Thor" and "Iron Man 2" will build towards an "Avengers" movie in 2011, featuring Marvel's most popular costumed super-heroes, including Cap, lost at sea during the war, »

Sam Worthington Would Like to Play Captain America

15 December 2009 2:49 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

When Sam Worthington wore an Avengers T-shirt during a recent interview with MTV, Internet speculation had the Australian actor possibly cast as either Captain America or Hawkeye in the upcoming Marvel Comics adaptation, The Avengers. Worthington told SciFiWire that he's not cast in Captain America, but he would really like to be.

I know, the bloggers are going bananas. I'm a fan, man. I'm a big fan. And I've always said, if you're going to wear a shirt on a blog or the TV, wear something you're interested in. I'm not a billboard, so I'm going to wear something that I'm intrigued by. I'm a big Captain America fan. And according to all the bloggers, you know, "Damn him, he's Australian, how dare he? Who does he think he is?" I read it all. But you know, It's just as I said, I'm just a fan.

Can You Picture Robert Pattinson as Magneto?

12 December 2009 9:30 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Actually, I can picture this. I may not be a fan of 'The Twilight Saga', but the idea of Robert Pattinson playing a young Magneto in the long simmering 'X-Men Origins: Magneto' project makes perfect sense to me.

It seems to make sense to Pattison, too. According to the Coventry Telegraph, the young heartthrob recently responded to a question about whether or not he'd like to play any comic book characters on the big screen, saying: "Well, yeah, I think everyone wonders about that sometimes. My little cousin tells me I look like Magneto so I guess that's who I should probably play."

Action heroes (and villains) appear to be the big draw right now for the 'Twilight' alums. Taylor Lautner has signed on to play the superhuman Max Steel, while Kellan Lutz wants to play the lead role in The First Avenger: Captain America.

Kellan Lutz Would Like to Appear in Bourne 4 and Play Captain America

12 December 2009 1:22 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Kellan Lutz will have a busy 2010 with A Nightmare on Elm Street and playing Emmet Cullen in The Twlight Saga: Eclipse, however Lutz told The Dishrag that he'd like to keep busy by joining a couple other movie franchises.

I'm making this checklist as an actor. Right now I just really want to be part of the Bourne franchise and the more I say that, maybe Matt Damon will read it and it and maybe I can play his brother.

Lutz would like to play a superhero as well.

I'd love to be Captain America someday.

Should Lutz not get cast in those dream projects, he has a variety of other projects in his future.

Most are action films and a couple of romantic comedies and I'm just thrilled with all the scripts.

Emily Blunt Talks ‘Wolfman’ Delays

11 December 2009 12:23 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

If you’ve been keeping an eye on the news coming out about the upcoming new adaptation of The Wolfman, you’re probably aware that the film has gone through some pretty major shake-ups: multiple release delays; new editors brought in to recut it; and even a redesign of the wolf man look. Your average citizen would probably look at that information and smell a stinker.

However, despite these problems, the promo materials such as trailers, images and posters have been rolling out like all’s well with The Wolfman and I must say they’re doing a good job of downplaying any issues. But what do the cast have to say about the delays of The Wolfman? Well, one of the cast members, Emily Blunt, who plays Gwen Conliffe in the movie, recently spoke to Shock Till You Drop and she gave her take on why it’s taking »

Joe Quesada Loves Iron Man 2, Meets for Captain America

10 December 2009 4:48 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Joe Quesada tweeted some updates  a few hours ago for the Marvel Studios moviegoers out there about next summer’s Iron Man 2 and the relatively-quiet-in-development The First Avenger: Captain America.

On Iron Man 2, he says he’s seen a rough cut of the film and is in love with it, praising director Jon Favreau for his masterful work. This is not dissimilar to his high regard for Thor director Kenneth Branagh, whom he says he could listen to talk and act out scenes of Thor for hours on end. As for Captain America,  he says they recently had a very good script meeting.

Here are Quesada’s messages:

“Back in La and just saw a rough cut of Iron Man 2. I worship before the alter of the mighty Favreau, he is da man!”

Commenting recently on his Twitter account, Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada said that he has already seen Iron Man 2 and was pretty stoked about it. "Back in La and just saw a rough cut of Iron Man 2," he said. "I worship before the alter of the mighty Favreau, he is da man!"

Shortly thereafter, Quesada also talked about The First Avenger: Captain America, tweeting, "Did I forget to mention an Amazing Cap script meeting? Actually I did. I work here and these movies can't come out fast enough for me."

So far there's been no word on casting for the latter project, though speculation has ranged from Leonardo DiCaprio to Mark Valley (Human Target). Even Twilight's Kellan Lutz would "…love to be Captain America someday" (but probably not today).

The Wolfman Gets an R-Rating

9 December 2009 8:16 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

This should be good news for horror fans who are already anticipating next year’s adaptation of The Wolfman, starring Benicio Del Toro, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Hugo Weaving and Emily Blunt. Our friends over at Slash Film have gotten word from studio Universal that a final cut of the much-troubled Wolfman adaptation has been handed in by director Joe Johnston (Captain America) and that the studio is happy with what they’re seeing.

Even better, Universal has reportedly decided to go with a longer and more violent R-rated version The Wolfman, which is rumored to be the better than the clipped and neutered version (see how I worked a dog joke in there?)  I’m sure many of us were worried the studio might try to push into the PG-13 market.

Though some of our Screen Rant readers disagree, I still think the second Wolfman trailer showed off what could »

Marvel Studios Chairman To Step Down When Disney Deal Is Finalized

8 December 2009 7:01 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

With the impending sale of Marvel to Disney set to be finalized by the end of the year, we could be seeing the first significant sign of change.

Variety is reporting that Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel will step down as soon as Disney takes control of Marvel. Maisel joined the company in 2004 as the president of the newly formed Marvel Studios and was instrumental in raising the $525 million capital that allowed Marvel to finance and produce its own films, including “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk.”

Maisel was previously a development executive at Disney and he is credited as being one of the first Marvel executives to speak with Disney about a potential deal.

David Maisel leaving Marvel as chairman

7 December 2009 8:01 PM, PST | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

The chairman of Marvel Studios is departing the company when The Walt Disney Company finishes formalizing its acquisition of the comic book publisher. David Maisel, the guy that helped attract investors to give up $525 million dollars of financing money so Marvel Studios could go out and make movies of Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, as well as the upcoming ones Thor, The Avengers and Captain America, is headed out the door.

Maisel once worked for Disney as director of corporate development and strategic planning; ironically, the merger between Marvel and his former employer may be the cause for his departure. Actually, the reason why Maisel is leaving Marvel but hasn't been offered a job with Disney or the new Marvel makes the move all the more speculatitive. It's not like Maisel hasn't done a good job for the company's investors; all indications are that Marvel Studios is about to »

Sam Worthington linked to Captain America role

Would Australian actor Sam Worthington make a good Captain America?

That's the question superhero fans are asking after the star was seen wearing an Avengers T-shirt during an interview about Avatar on MTV.

No actor has yet been cast as the lead in Marvel's The First Avenger: Captain America, due out in July 2011. The script was completed last month and filming begins next summer.

The hero will then feature alongside Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth's Thor and others in team-up movie The Avengers in 2012.

Worthington stars in James Cameron's upcoming Avatar and was previously seen in Terminator Salvation.

His Avengers T-shirt (pictured) is being seen by some as an indication that he wants the role of Captain America or even that he is already under consideration by the film's director Joe Johnston.
