One of the biggest complaints that critics of the "Star Wars" prequels have is the idea that George Lucas was simply enabled by so-called "Yes Men." As they would tell it, George Lucas was so powerful and infallible that no one around him thought they could tell him "no" for anything. More than that, these yes men would just do whatever Lucas asked without thought to whether or not it was a good idea. For a long time, it seemed like this was the established wisdom; forget the fact that many people actually love the prequels as they are and aren't concerned about what did or didn't happen behind the scenes during their development.
Was this really an issue? Did it even happen? Well, we here at /Film have taken it upon ourselves to get to the bottom of this pervasive attitude.

The "Star Wars" galaxy is a big place -- and it's always getting bigger. Ever since Disney purchased Lucasfilm back in October 2012, the company has let loose a flood of new "Star Wars" movies, shows, novels, comics, and video games. The results, as literally anybody on the Internet will tell you, have been somewhat mixed. On the one hand, we've enjoyed all-time great stories such as "Andor," "The Last Jedi" (deal with it), and "Star Wars: Visions." On the other, we've been saddled with "The Rise of Skywalker" and "The Book of Boba Fett." The phrase "ups and downs" doesn't even begin to cut it.
The franchise won't be letting up any time soon, either. Over the next few years, Lucasfilm is set to produce a new slate of movies from James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. They'll also be making a fresh push on the video game front,...

A long time ago in a galaxy not so far away (it was this galaxy), Ron Moore, a writer on various Star Trek shows and the creator of the Battlestar Galactica reboot, was attached to write a Star Wars TV series – Star Wars: Underworld. George Lucas’ Star Wars: Underworld series was one of many projects lost during the Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm. The long-in-development live-action series was a source of excitement for many Star Wars fans, who gobbled up new rumors, concept art leaks, and reports of scripts being written. Alas, the project never came to be, but former Star Wars: […]

While fans anxiously await The Mandalorian Season 2’s slated fall premiere (prospective delays notwithstanding), Disney+, the streaming home of the Star Wars series, will soon release something to temporarily sate those Baby Yoda hunger pangs. A new docuseries is set to premiere on the platform—in time for May the 4th—bringing behind-the-scenes footage and new interviews about the process of bringing the serial spinoff phenomenon to life.
Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian, as it will be titled, will manifest on Disney+ as an eight-episode documentary series hosted by creator Jon Favreau himself. The series will take shape as a behind-the-scenes showcase of everything that went into the conception of The Mandalorian thus far, debuting never-before-seen footage, behind-the-scenes material, along with roundtable interviews with key personnel.

The revelation that Rey was Palpatine’s granddaughter in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was surprising for many reasons. For one, it suggested that the Emperor, the most evil being in the galaxy known for his gruesome appearance, had actually had a love life. You might wonder what drove J.J. Abrams and writer Chris Terrio to come up with that idea, but in actual fact, it wasn’t them who came up with it. George Lucas did.
Test footage recently surfaced online for the abandoned Star Wars: Underworld TV series, which was a big pet project of Lucas’ that he developed for years before Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm. The sprawling show would have taken place prior to the Original Trilogy, following various characters from the movies. One of these was Palpatine himself, whose storyline would’ve seen him fall in love with a woman and have his heart broken.

After the mixed reception to the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, fans have often wondered over the past few years what franchise creator George Lucas would’ve done differently. In sharp contrast from the days when everyone complained about the prequels, there’s been increasing talk of folks wanting to see Lucas be invited back to have another crack at the Sw universe in the Disney era. And apparently, Lucasfilm has listened.

You can’t make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. You also can’t oversee a multi-billion dollar science fiction empire without dropping a few enticing what-ifs along the way. For ‘Star Wars‘ fans, one of the biggest what-ifs has been “Star Wars: Underworld,” a massive live-action series planned by George Lucas back in the early 2000s. Now, thanks to an unearthed batch of footage, fans can at least get a good look at what might’ve been.

The past few months have seen the debut of The Mandalorian, the first live-action TV series set within the Star Wars universe, and it couldn’t have been more of a success. The thing is, though, that we could have had this new step for the franchise many years ago. You see, prior to selling the brand to Disney, George Lucas was working on Star Wars: Underworld, a vastly ambitious TV show that never ended up making it to screens.
Fans have obviously been fascinated to find out what this aborted series would’ve been like though and now, for the first time, we have actual test footage and behind the scenes material to set our eyeballs on. YouTube channel Holonet has uploaded the above 10-minute long video, giving us our first look at Underworld, which would have been set in the period between the prequels and the Original Trilogy.

In an alleged leak, test footage from Lucasfilm’s pre-Disney Star Wars television project, Star Wars: Underworld, has surfaced.
Star Wars: Underworld is a title that evokes what could have been for the Force franchise, planned by George Lucas as the first live-action television series during the few years before Disney’s acquisition – an event that led to the project being tossed into the scrap heap. Now, in a franchise landscape that’s since experienced a Sequel Trilogy, with fans now clamoring for Baby Yoda dolls after The Mandalorian, it appears that footage has surfaced from the Star Wars series that got away!

Wedge Antilles, otherwise known as Tie SS-2-5 during his time at Skystrike Academy, is a true icon of the Rebel Alliance. So you can imagine our excitement when we glimpsed Denis Lawson’s X-wing pilot back behind the joystick in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
He’s fought off the Empire across Yavin and Endor, but by the time Episode IX rolls around, Wedge Antilles once again takes up arms against galactic tyranny. This time, it’s the so-called Final Order causing a ruckus, and below you’ll find an HD shot of Wedge back in the cockpit courtesy of Star Wars Underworld.
It’s undoubtedly another example of fan service from The Rise of Skywalker – itself a film that panders to the fans, arguably at its own expense – but even from the get-go, it was pretty clear J.J. Abrams and co-writer Chris Terrio wanted Episode IX to...

This Han-focused spin-off bridges the gap between the Star Wars Prequel and Original Trilogies, but its journey wasn't all plain sailing…
This Star Wars article contains spoilers.
The idea for a Han Solo prequel existed for more than a decade prior to 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. George Lucas first toyed with the notion in 2005’s Revenge of the Sith. One version of the film’s script featured a 10-year-old orphaned Han Solo who was being raised by Chewbacca. Lucas later planned to feature Han’s first meeting with Chewie and the circumstances that saw Solo win the Millennium Falcon in the scrapped Star Wars: Underworld TV series.
In hindsight, Lucas’ failure to get these projects off the ground was a blessing in disguise. Solo: A Star Wars Story suffered the ignominy of being the first Star Wars film to bomb at the box office,...

Going into The Rise of Skywalker, Star Wars fans have many theories about Rey’s heritage. Though The Last Jedi had Kylo Ren tell Daisy Ridley’s heroine that her parents were nobodies, this hasn’t stopped folks from believing there’s still more going on in Rey’s past than we currently know. In fact, one unexpected answer has reared its head recently and here’s a new bit of evidence that might support it.
First of all, let’s talk about Star Wars: Underworld. Earlier this decade, George Lucas was developing it as the first live-action Sw TV show, but it never got off the ground and Disney didn’t resurrect the idea after taking over Lucasfilm. God of War creator Cory Balrog has given us an insight into one thing Underworld would have explored, though: a surprisingly sympathetic origin for Emperor Palpatine.

Yesterday we learned that Lucasfilm and director Rian Johnson was going to develop a whole new trilogy of Star Wars films completely separate from the Skywalker saga. This new saga is said to "introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored."
If that's not exciting enough, Disney CEO Bob Iger has announced that there is a live-action Star Wars TV series currently in development! This is being developed for Disney's new streaming service.
There are no details on what the series will entail, but I really hope that it's the Star Wars: Underworld project that George Lucas and his team were developing for Lucasfilm before Disney bought them up.
There are said to be over 100 completed scripts of a 400 episode series that are ready to shoot when and if Lucasfilm ever decided to develop them further. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy previously...

With all of the Star Wars films currently in development, the popular franchise is on its way to being full swing. At some point, Lucasfilm has got to start making Star Wars TV series just like Marvel is doing. I just assumed they would kind of follow that same model of making both movies and series for fans to enjoy.
George Lucas developed one called Star Wars: Underworld, which already has a bunch of completed scripts. Now there's a fan petition asking Lucasfilm and Disney to make a Netflix series based on the hit game Star Wars: The Old Republic.
A new cinematic trailer for the game was recently released, which was absolutely stunning. If you haven't seen it, make sure to click here. Here is what the petition says:

Last month we learned that ABC was having conversations about developing that live-action Star Wars: Underworld series that George Lucas was developing before he sold his life's work to Disney.
As you've probably already heard, there are said to be over 100 completed scripts of a 400 episode series that are ready to rock and roll when and if Lucasfilm ever decided to develop them further. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy previously talked about these scripts saying they are "gold" and that she does, in fact, want to "develop those things further."
It seems like it's going to be a very long time before that ever happens. Back in September, Disney Media Networks Co-Chairman and Disney-ABC Television President Ben Sherwood stepped in to play down the rumours of a live action Star Wars TV series making it to ABC any time soon (despite the fact that George Lucas famously had such a show in development for a long time before selling his franchise to Disney, and ABC is one of Disney's biggest TV networks). Some interesting new details have emerged regarding Forest Whitaker's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story character, Saw Gerrera. We know the character was first introduced in the Star Wars universe in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but before that he was supposed to be in the live-action Star Wars TV drama being developed by George Lucas.
Star Wars Story Group's Pablo Hidalgo talked about the character on this week's episode of The Star Wars Show explaining:
"A lot of people know him from The Clone Wars, but he actually started off before that. George Lucas had him in mind for his live action [Star Wars] TV series that he had in development. That never happened, but he found a place to put Saw into a story in Clone Wars."
Every time I hear about that abandoned Star Wars: Underworld series, my heart sinks because everything that I've heard about it has sounded pretty amazing.

When Disney purchased Lucasfilm, two key projects that were in development at the latter were put on ice - unlikely to be ever resurrected. One was the video game "Star Wars: 1313," one that reportedly tied back to Boba Fett and dealt with the lowest levels of the city planet of Coruscant.
The other was "Star Wars Underworld," the live-action series for which scripts for dozens of episodes were already completed before the plug was pulled. That project had loose ties to '1313', and all we knew about it up til now was that it dealt with criminal gangs that ruled the lower levels of Coruscant during the rise of the Empire.
Now some new details about it emerged in a new interview with "God of War" video game director Cory Barlog. Barlog briefly worked at Lucasarts, the Lucasfilm game studio where 1313 was in development. Talking with Venturebeat this week,...

The description of classic Star Wars villain Emperor Palpatine on the character's Wikipedia page ends like this:
Since the initial theatrical run of Return of the Jedi, Palpatine has become a widely recognized popular culture symbol of evil, sinister deception, tyranny, and the subversion of democracy.
With a description like that, did you ever think there may have been a way for the creatives at Lucasfilm to make us feel any sympathy for that character? I certainly didn't. But in a new interview with VentureBeat (via io9), Cory Barlog — the director of the new God of War and a former LucasArts employee — talks about getting his hands on some of the scripts for Star Wars: Underworld (the live-action Star Wars TV series that was abandoned before it ever went into production), and it turns out "sympathy for Palpatine" was going to be one of the major surprises of the series.

Before ‘The Force Awakens,’ or a mooted new “Star Wars” trilogy was ever on the table, there was “Star Wars: Underworld,” a live-action TV show announced in 2005. "It's kind of like 'Episode IV' — it's funny and there's action, but it's [a] lot more talky,” George Lucas told Total Film the time. “It's more of what I would call a soap opera with a bunch of personal dramas in it. It's not really based on action-adventure films from the '30s — it's actually more based on film noir movies from the ‘40s.” Read More: Disney Pushes Back Rian Johnson's 'Star Wars: Episode VIII' The series was later described as “darker, grittier, and more character-based” with producer Rick McCallum hinting at bounty hunter involvement and later describing it as “ ‘Deadwood’ in space" and " 'Empire [Strikes Back]' on steroids.” Later, rumored details said the show was to be set in the Coruscant...

Last year, we saw two different rumors pop up that excited fans who hoped to see a live-action Star Wars TV show. The first indicated that there were as many as three different shows in development that might head to Netflix, and the second came straight from Kathleen Kennedy herself when she revealed that she was very interested in developing Star Wars: Underworld, George Lucas's planned TV series that was shelved when Disney bought Lucasfilm. (Some reports indicated that Lucas had already commissioned as many as 100 scripts for that series.)
Now TVLine is here with some bad news: they've spoken to several sources who say that no live-action shows are currently in development at the company. If a live-action show were on the way, one guy who would know about it would be ABC president Paul Lee (who would certainly be vying for the show to air on his...

A live-action Star Wars television show has been both rumored and in development for a long time now. Back in the mid-2000s, George Lucas himself was working to bring Star Wars: Underworld to the small screen. It's a project that never came to fruition, though that didn't stop animated fare like Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels from coming out. All the same, we'd be lying if we said we weren't intrigued by the idea of a live-action Star Wars show.
Some time ago, there was talk of Disney re-using the sets for their feature films for the TV series, but given how infrequently the Star Wars universe seems to revisit locations, it seemed unlikely to work out in the long run. Plus, after the acquisition of the property, Disney decided to divert its resources on one thing.

The massive success of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" has had some not unexpected consequences, and not just the delay of the next film in the series by seven months.
TV Line reports that the long-gestating live-action hour-long drama TV series "Star Wars: Underworld," developed by George Lucas himself, will not be seeing the light of day anytime soon despite murmurings of a potential resurrection last month.
Speaking with the outlet, ABC network president Paul Lee was asked if the Disney-owned ABC network might prove to be a home for a potential "Star Wars" series. Lee says Lucasfilm and Disney are "they arefocused on their movies so we don't have any plans at the moment." A Lucasfilm rep then told the site: "Our current focus for TV is on animation [Star Wars Rebels, etc.]."

With Star Wars once again a pop culture force to be reckoned with, the time would seem ripe to revive that long-gestating live-action series set “in a galaxy far, far away.” But the project remains about as active as R2-D2 in The Force Awakens. Why? It’s complicated.

A long time ago, following the release of "Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge Of The Sith," and before Lucasfilm was sold to Disney, George Lucas was busy making more plans for "Star Wars," and they were pretty bold. Titled "Star Wars: Underworld," the stories would've bridged the gap between the movie prequels and the original trilogy, and writers were hired including Ronald D. Moore ("Battlestar Galactica") and Louise Fox ("Camelot"). Four hundred episodes were planned, and apparently between fifty and one hundred scripts had been completed. But then Disney came knocking, and the show was effectively kiboshed. However, it seems that material is just too good to let slide completely. Slashfilm recently caught up with Kathleen Kennedy and inquired about Lucas' TV show, and the producer revealed the company was looking at what they had in the archives. And that's not all. Perhaps the biggest loss for fans in.

Slashfilm recently interview Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy over the weekend during the "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" press junket. The interviewer asked Kennedy about the prospect of two abandoned projects that never received the green light while Lucas was in charge. The two projects in question are the live-action "Star Wars: Underworld" TV series and the "Star Wars 1313" video game.
The "Star Wars: Underworld" TV series was supposed to set on the planet of Coruscant and take place during "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith" and "Star Wars: A New Hope." The series was said to be "funny" and with "action." The tone of the series would've been based on the noir films of the 1940's and chronicle the underworld of Coruscant. The 'Star Wars' prequels producer Rick McCallum described the series as "'Deadwood' in space" and "'The Empire Strikes Back' on steroids."

Long thought defunct, LucasArts action game Star Wars 1313 may still have life in it, producer Kathleen Kennedy suggests...
Set in the dark criminal underbelly of Coruscant, Star Wars 1313 was a great-looking game that simply came along at the wrong time. Completed to the point where LucasArts were showing off extended gameplay trailers in 2012, Star Wars 1313 was a gritty, adult game starring the unspeakably cool Boba Fett. Anticipation was high, but then Disney bought Lucasfilm, and LucasArts was duly shuttered. With that, Star Wars 1313 - and every other project in the works at the studio - died with it.
But a new interview with Lucasfilm's president Kathleen Kennedy suggests there may still be life in the game, since she brought the topic up, apparently unprompted, during an interview with Slash Film. She mentioned that Lucasfilm's new order has been spending "a lot of time" going through...

Three years ago, LucasArts unveiled third-person actioner Star Wars 1313 during E3, sending fans into a tail-spin with a slew of stunning concept art – not to mention the fact that the game starred Boba Fett as the protagonist.
But the title never may it past pre-production after LucasArts was shuttered the following year by Disney, but according to Lucasfilm president, both 1313 and George Lucas’ little-known live-action TV pitch for Star Wars: Underworld aren’t off the table.

Quizzed about the dormant – and seemingly canned – IPs, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed that the creative team at the company have “spent a lot of time” weighing up the potential options to continue both Lucas’ scuppered series and LucasArts’ 1313.
No. No, interestingly enough, thats an area we’ve spent a lot of time, reading through the material that he developed is something we very much would like to explore.

Before Disney bought Lucasfilm and took over the Star Wars franchise, George Lucas had two major projects in development. One was a TV drama called Star Wars: Underworld and the other was a video game called Star Wars 1313. Many fans assumed these projects were dead, but as it turns out, Lucasfilm is very much looking at still developing those!
The news comes from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy who was asked about the Star Wars: Underworld project by /Film during a press event. This is what Kennedy told them:

As you may recall, there was at one time a Star Wars TV series in the works with the working title of Star Wars: Underworld. George Lucas talked about plans to make as many 400 episodes, while we heard that 100 scripts had already been written. The main problem appeared to be the budget, with a series of this scale not being a realistic endeavour for any TV network. Meanwhile, the highly anticipated Boba Fett video game - Star Wars 1313 - was scrapped when Disney bought Lucasfilm and the Expanded Universe was thrown out. However, both of these projects could still become a reality! Asked by /Film about the former, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said: "Interestingly enough, thats an area we’ve spent a lot of time, reading through the material that he developed is something we very much would like to explore." When Disney took over Lucasfilm, various "Star Wars" projects the company had in the works were essentially scrapped. The two most notable were Lucas' proposed live-action TV series "Star Wars: Underworld," and the video game title "Star Wars 1313".
Both of these projects would have explored the darker side of the city planet of Coruscant seen heavily in the prequels. 'Underworld' was described as a 1940s noir style gritty character-based drama, '1313' a story set in the deepest and most run down levels of the city where you would follow the early years of bounty hunter Boba Fett.
Both projects were someway along when they were canned - Lucas himself rumored to have penned up to one hundred episodes of 'Underworld,' whilst '1313' was far enough along for game footage to be shown at expos and online.

Plot details, character info and more has arrived for the cancelled Star Wars series…
News
In the world of science-fiction telly, a cancelled series to rally behind is nothing new. But this one is a bit different, not least because it was effectively cancelled before it had even begun.
New information about George Lucas and Rick McCallum’s long-planned Star Wars: Underworld live action series, which never filmed an episode and has seemingly been dropped (at least for now) in the Disney takeover, suggests it may well have been a real treat for fans.
Stephen Scaia, a writer for the doomed series, recently dropped some big hints about the show on a Kickstarter page for his current Indiana Jones project. ‘How Han met Chewie’ is one of the biggest teases, as well as a potential Boba Fett action sequence and 'Lando losing the Millennium Falcon' being mentioned as potential plot points.

Here we go again. Various new bits and pieces of Star Wars rumour are circling the interwebs today. It's like we're all blindfolded, and solid stories are that floaty ball thing we're trying to hit with our lightsaber of news. Or something. The Force is not strong anywhere here, but the snippets involve the long-mooted live-action TV series, the possible casting of Saoirse Ronan and Sullivan Stapleton, and a promise from Jj Abrams that the new Star Wars will not be "Disneyfied".TV first. The last we heard about the live-action series was back in January, when the Us ABC Network began to show an interest as Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. came together. Prior to that, Lucasfilm honcho Rick McCallum had talked up Star Wars: Underworld, which would have focused on the Star Wars universe's crime syndicates, but which stalled due to concerns over a potential $5m-an-episode budget. Now, the...

As long as there has been "Star Wars," there has been hopes/wishes/dreams/aspirations for a live action television series to branch off from the main saga and explore new worlds. In the animated realm, the franchise has done well, with numerous spinoffs, but a live action series has been a tough nut to track. The closest in recent memory was something called "Star Wars: Underworld," described by longtime George Lucas associate and producer Rick McCallum as " 'Deadwood' in space" but it too stalled out (as did a tie-in videogame as documented in Kotaku's excellent piece on the collapse of LucasArts). But time to start thinking about series possibilities again... According to the usually well-informed Blue Sky Disney the early success of "Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D." has reportedly got the the idea wheel spinning at Disney about bringing "Star Wars" to the small screen. Before Disney bought Lucasfilm, there was a great-sounding Star Wars: Underworld TV project in development. It was compared to The Godfather and Deadwood, but in space, and dealt with the Star Wars underground. I would have loved to see this series, but at this point I don't think it will happen as it would be an expensive show to produce, and it might be too dark for Disney's taste, but you never know. In a previous interview, former producer Rick McCallum explained,
"The situation we have is that each episode – or if you put two hour long episodes together – is bigger than any film we’ve ever done. It’s on the Avatar level and we’ll only have about $5-6 million we can spend on each episode."
It doesn't mean a live action series isn't going to happen though. IGN recently talked ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee, who...

Following yesterday’s announcement that Disney shut down LucasArts, a bunch of new details have now surfaced about one of the company’s most talked about projects, Star Wars 1313. This game was slated to be based around the seedy underbelly of Coruscant. Just imagine a Star Wars La Noire, and a game centred around bounty hunters. All of these things got more than a few people excited. Just watch this video to see what we are missing out on.

Unlike their past venture into the realm of live-action TV, I believe it is time for Star Wars to make the leap onto the small screen. Some of you may recall the Holiday Special, others may recall Ewoks: The Battle for Endor in 1985. Both are surrounded with an aura of shock and horror. However, Lucasfilm is planning on putting a new small-screen series animated series into production at a later date, which will explore “a whole new Star Wars series set in a time period previously untouched in Star Wars films or television programming.” And with the cancellation of Clone Wars and detours, it has got me thinking. What else can they do using the live-action medium?

If you have been living under a rock for the past several months I have some exciting news for you, Star Wars is back! We will have new movies, new television, new games, new collectible plates, new napkins - Ok you get the idea. While I have seen the detractors who feel this franchise will continue to be ruined, There are also others like myself who are cautiously optimistic. Sure there will be some stinkers as they release tons of television and movies, but with the might of Disney behind them, there will be good Star Wars adventures, I am sure of it. After months of day dreaming since the announcement that Disney had purchased Star Wars, I have compiled a list of my top 5 Star Wars stories I want to see told.
5. Kyle Katarn / Dark Forces
Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 is still one of my favorite games of all time.

Now that Disney has finalised its deal to buy Lucasfilm and Star Wars, Disney's television subsidiary ABC is going to look at potential ways to work with the brand, including possibly getting the long-in-development Star Wars live-action TV series made, EW reports. It seems like Rick McCallum's Sith Lord-like patience may finally start to pay off. According to ABC entertainment president Paul Lee:
