As Bruce Campbell proved to us all last week when he debunked the previous week’s announcement that Army of Darkness 2 was on its way, news of impending horror sequels should probably always be taken with a grain of salt. Countless sequels have been announced over the years, only to drop off the face of the earth shortly thereafter. It’s just the nature of the game, in a fickle business like the movie-making one.
Back in August we took a look at ten of those sequels that we’re still waiting to see, and today I’ve got ten more for ya. They were all planned, they were all announced, but none of them ever actually happened!

Don Coscarelli has two successful cult franchises to his name in Phantasm and Beastmaster. The announcement of Bubba Nosferatu, sequel to 2002's Bubba Ho-Tep, makes that three ... so why not go for a fourth? The writer/director purchased rights to John Dies at the End, itself a cult web serial by author David Wong, first released online in 2001. The resulting film, opening Friday at Alamo Drafthouse on Slaughter, is arguably the best work Coscarelli's ever done.
Coscarelli's screenplay is smart, fast-paced and exciting, full of razor-sharp wit delivered first-person by star Chase Williamson. The story incorporates many important elements from the book while changing various details, sometimes for practical reasons. (Fans of the book will note the name and sex of the dog Molly have changed.)

John Dies at the End will be released to theaters on January 25th and I recently had the opportunity to interview a number of people involved with the movie. I’ve already published my article with Don Coscarelli and next up is my interview with Paul Giamatti. Not only did we talk about his involvement in John Dies at the End as an actor and executive producer, but I also learned about his love of classic horror movies.
I recently watched John Dies at the End and loved how much it felt like a movie out of the 80′s. So many horror movies from that decade had a great mix of horror and comedy.
Paul Giamatti: I’m a fan of that kind of stuff too. This has a nice old school thing to it which is really good.

Wow, what a hell of a way to start off my 2013. Not only was I able to catch a viewing of John Dies At The End before its limited theatrical release January 25th thanks to an early wide-release Video On Demand campaign, but then I was gifted the opportunity to sit down with director Don Coscarelli and producer/actor Paul Giamatti for an exclusive interview.
I mean, these two guys are legendary in my book. Coscarelli is responsible for every Phantasm film, as well as a few other gems including the cult worshiped “Bruce Campbell playing Elvis” film, Bubba Ho-Tep. Giamatti is a Oscar-nominated actor who has played everyone from John Adams to Santa Claus, earning himself instant recognition around Hollywood.

It’s been fourteen years since Don Coscarelli last entered the mulit-dimension universe of flying spiked spheres, dwarves, and the Tall Man. Over the years, the Phantasm series has garnered a huge underground following among the horror community. Coscarelli may not be as spoken about as such directors as Romero or Carpenter, but he is certainly a legend in the horror community and one whose film projects continue to invigorate fans and critics alike. When was the last time you could say that about the other two directors I just mentioned? While making the rounds for his next film, the bizarre, drug fueled horror comedy John Dies At The End, Coscarelli sat down with Bloody-Disgusting to discuss his new film and address the rumors of a fifth film starring the incomparable Angus Scrimm. It sounds like the possibility of Phantasm V is now greater than ever. Rumors have always been...

Since introducing horror fans to the fearsome flying spheres and terrifying Tall Man in Phantasm back in 1979, writer/director/producer Don Coscarelli has remained one of our most imaginative independent filmmakers.
With three Phantasm sequels under his belt as well as helming several other unique flicks including The Beastmaster, Bubba Ho-Tep and his latest trippy affair- John Dies at the End, Coscarelli remains fiercely loyal to bringing strange and haunting stories to life even after more than 35 years in the business.

The long awaited new Don Coscarelli movie John Dies At The End premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in the Park City at Midnight category. Synopsis: "It's a drug that promises an out-of-body experience with each hit. On the street they call it Soy Sauce, and users drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead is John and David, a pair of college dropouts who can barely hold down jobs. Can these two stop the oncoming horror in time to save humanity? No. No, they can't." This film had a little help from Hollywood A-lister Paul Giamatti, who produced and plays a role in the film. He wanted to work with Coscarelli on 'Bubba Nosferatu,' the aborted Bubba Ho-Tep' sequel, so offered his services when.

Elvis versus aliens. If that doesn't sound awesome to you, then you and I are not living on the same planet.
Though "Bubba Ho-Tep" director Don Coscarelli and actor Paul Giamatti have long been planning on putting rock icon Elvis Presley up against a pack of blood-thirsty vampires in "Bubba Nosferatu," it now appears that their scheme has gotten bigger -- franchise-sized big, in fact, including a detour to New Mexico.
"Oh, we have all kinds of plans for a 'Bubba' franchise," Giamatti told MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival, appearing alongside Coscarelli to support their new movie "John Dies at the End." "We've been thinking 'Bubba Roswell,' is what we've been thinking."
As implied by the title, "Bubba Roswell" would be "Elvis versus aliens," according to Coscarelli. I repeat: who could possibly say no to that? Well... perhaps a few someones. Despite a rabid fan following and...

The first time I heard Paul Giamatti talk about Don Coscarelli was on the set of "Shoot 'Em Up." At the time, Giamatti had just recently started talking to Coscarelli about starring in "Bubba Nosferatu," the sequel to "Bubba Ho-Tep," and as soon as I steered the conversation to the idea of the sequel, Giamatti lit up. He told me about his first exposure to "Phantasm" when he was in his early teens, and by the end of the conversation, I realized that Giamatti was a full-blown horror nerd, and I liked him much more as a result. It's hard to believe it's been almost a decade since genre favorite Don Coscarelli delivered the outrageous "Bubba Ho-Tep." That film which pit Elvis Presley (Bruce Campbell, of course) and JFK (Ossie Davis, naturally) against an Egyptian mummy was a hit, and while an idea for a sequel, "Bubba Nosferatu," knocked around for a while, it never really panned out. However, fans take heart as Coscarelli is back with a brand new feature and his flair for the weird is still very much intact. And then there are the precious few: writers who can captivate a reader with the telling of their tale and with their characters as well as being able to astound their peers – the people who know the mechanics of what he does – and earn their respect by the journeyman-like talent displayed on every page of every book.
Joe R. Lansdale is one of those writers. Since the publication of his first novel, Act of Love, his unique voice has captured both the hearts and the imaginations of readers and wordsmiths alike.

While working on his latest feature John Dies at the End, the great Don Coscarelli took some time recently to update fans on what type of progress (if any at all) has been made regarding the two films fans want more than anything - Phantasm 5 and Bubba Nosferatu.
In an interview with Bloody Disgusting Coscarelli said of Phantasm 5:
"Listen, we’re all getting older but the desire is there. We’ve been cooking up a couple ideas, and I like to think that as soon as ['John Dies at the End' is] wrapped up we’ll try to get something going. Cause you know, over the years I’ve written a number of different iterations of ‘Phantasm’, and I’d just hate not to ever realize any of that. During B-d's visit to the set of Don Coscarelli's latest movie, an adaptation of cult favorite novel John Dies At The End written by David Wong (nee Jason Pargin), we caught up with the beloved creator of the Phantasm series to find out what's happening with both the long-awaited fifth entry in that franchise as well as the long-rumored Bubba Ho-Tep sequel, Bubba Nosferatu. Hear what he had to say about the possibility that they'll forward, as well as whether we might one day soon see those deadly silver spheres flying at us in 3-D! First things first - will we be seeing a Phantasm 5 sometime in the near future? Coscarelli, while not giving a definitive answer, at least gave fans reason to hope.

You don't know who Don Coscarelli is? Well, Don Coscarelli is the filmmaker behind the trippy Phantasm series of horror movies as well as cult classic Bubba Ho-Tep. He was supposed to be working on the Ho-Tep sequel, Bubba Nosferatu, but according to a new report from Quint on AICN, Coscarelli is actually shooting another film right now, titled John Dies at the End, based on David Wong's novel. He's apparently been "covertly filming the movie" and actually has wrangled Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown for roles in the film alongside newcomers Chase Williamson and Rob Mayes (Sorority Wars) as the actual leads. Read on! We're not exactly sure what that photo is (it just looks like a stylized welders mask) but it was posted as an early tease. John Dies at the End is about two twenty-something losers who gain extra sensory perception via a substance called Soy Sauce,...

Paul Giamatti is starring in a new film by Don Coscarelli and it's not Bubba Nosferatu.
No, after a couple days of being teased by Coscarelli via his teaser account word is now out that the director's new film - which has been shooting covertly for long enough now that I've actually heard that it's already totally in the can - is his adaptation of David Wong's John Dies At The End. And tagging along for the ride in supporting roles are both Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown.
John Dies At The End is the story of two twenty-something's juiced up on some sort of supernaturally powered drug that a) messes with their heads mightily and b) puts them at odds with the forces they have unleashed. The smart money says one of them is named John and that he dies at the end.

Well, let the last two solid days of speculation finally come to an end. Would the legendary Don Coscarelli's new project be Phantasm 5 or Bubba Nosferatu? Nope, it's something entirely different that's rockin' a hell of a cast thus far.

The Phantasm and Bubba Ho Tep director has been cryptically tweeting about a new project recently, and AICN now have the scoop that Don Coscarelli is, as we speak, directing John Dies at the End, based on the novel by David Wong.Anyone who's been following the protracted saga of Bubba Nosferatu might not be surprised to learn that Coscarelli has Paul Giamatti obeying his orders on the new film, seemingly as a framing device: a reporter hearing the story from the lead character. Clancy Brown is also on-hand as a supernatural expert, and Bd put Phantasm's Tall Man Angus Scrimm on set too, although he's not mentioned by AICN.The two leads are as-yet-unknowns Chase Williamson and Rob Mayes, playing slackers who gain psychic powers after taking a drug called Soy Sauce. Yesterday Phantasm and Bubba Ho-Tep director Don Coscarelli joined Twitter. And today he tweeted simply: "Pre-production begins."
The question is, pre-production begins on what? And on that issue he aint saying. There have been ongoing rumblings of a new Phantasm movie, which seems the most likely option. Bubba Nosferatu stories continue swirling around. Earlier this year I was told by someone close to the man that he planned to shoot something unrelated to either franchise and there were reports a couple years back that he had picked up rights to adapt David Wong's novel John Dies At The End, so perhaps it's that?
The only hint he's giving came moments after the pre-production tweet which he followed with a note saying "Most ride in a hearse only once. Some are luckier." Let the speculation begin.

Bubba Ho-Tep became a cult hit in 2002 with its story about a mummy that stalks a nursing home and is dispatched by a man who thinks he's Elvis (Bruce Campbell) and another who thinks he's former President John F. Kennedy (Ossie Davis). The movie ended with a tease for a sequel, Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires. Originally intended as a joke, the sequel became a reality after the strong audience response to Bubba Ho-Tep.
Campbell left the project in 2007, citing differences over the script between himself and director Don Coscarelli. In 2008, Ron Perlman was suggested as a possible replacement for Campbell by Paul Giamatti, who is set to play Elvis' manager Colonel Parker in the movie, but, again, progress stalled. Undeterred, Giamatti spoke to MTV about the sequel, claiming that Bubba Nosferatu will definitely be produced. One day.

Just a couple weeks ago, as an aside, I asked what the hell was going on with Don Coscarelli's follow up to the 2002 film Bubba Ho-Tep. That one, you'll recall, cast Bruce Campbell as Elvis and Ossie Davis as JFK. Well, kind of JFK, anyway. And they fought an Egyptian mummy in a nursing home.
Now MTV has asked Paul Giamatti what the hell is going on with Bubba Nosferatu, which will not feature Campbell but possibly Ron Perlman as the King of Rock n' Roll, with Giamatti as Elvis' manager, Col. Tom Parker. And unlike Elvis, the movie's not dead.
"We've been trying to make that for two, three years, and we're going to get it done at some point," Giamatti said. "I'm going to fucking break my spine in half if I have to to get that thing done."...

Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires,The long delayed sequel to Don Coscarelli's Bubba Ho-Tep which starred Bruce Campbell is still breathing life, or so says Paul Giamatti. Bubba Nosferatu would bring aboard Ron Perlman replacing Campbell as Elvis and also welcomes Giamatti as Colonel Tom Parker.

If for some reason you're looking to have your film gain cult classic status, it's not a bad idea to work Bruce Campbell into the mix somehow. Director Don Coscarelli certainly scored one with his alternative take on musical icon Elvis Presley (Campbell) in the dark comedy Bubba Ho-Tep. Luckily Ron Perlman was eager to fill Campbell's shoes when the actor decided not to return for the sequel Bubba Nosferatu, but it sounds like the project still has an uphill battle to get off the ground due to a lack of financing. Fortunately, co-star Paul Giamatti told MTV, "I'm going to fucking break my spine in half if I have to to get that thing done." Giamatti, who will be playing Elvis Presley's manager "Colonel" Tom Parker in this sequel, is absolutely dedicated to making Bubba Nosferatu happen (Ron Perlman has also voiced his support in mentioning the project...

If, like this writer, you have a soft spot for the shabby but fun charms of Bruce Campbell-as-elderly-Elvis-fights-evil-mummy pic Bubba Ho-Tep, you’re probably still hoping that much-touted vampire-flavoured prequel Bubba Nosferatu might yet happen. But with Campbell ditching the lead role and the movie seemingly mired in financial issues, very little has happened with it. Still, Paul Giamatti, who agreed to play Colonel Tom Parker, seems convinced it’ll get made. Eventually.Chatting with MTV, Giamatti admitted that while it’s not happening just yet, he’s convinced it can get off the ground at some point. Elvis and monsters make for an unlikely pair, but fans of the Bruce Campbell-starring "Bubba Ho-tep" are already well aware of how well that combination actually works. Those same fans have anxiously anticipated "Bubba Nosferatu," the film's vampire-centric sequel, ever since "Ho-tep's" release. But the project has experienced numerous setbacks and delays, not the least of which is Campbell's departure as Elvis.
In the upsides department, Ron Perlman was mentioned as a possible replacement for Campbell in 2008, while actor Paul Giamatti is still set to co-star as Colonel Tom Parker. "We've been trying to make that for two, three years, and we're going to get it done at some point," Giamatti told MTV's Adam Rosenberg about the status of "Nosferatu." "I'm going to f---ing break my spine...

Joe R. Lansdale has been called a Mojo storyteller, a cult figure, a gifted storyteller, a folklorist, and an American original. I prefer to think of him as a purveyor of the Southern Gothic genre with stops to deliver some of the best crime stories through his recurring characters Hap Collins and Leonard Pine. (If you haven’t read a Hap and Leonard story, you need to get with the program and pick up a copy of Savage Season, their first adventure.)
Joe has also delighted horror fans with film versions of his short stories Bubba Ho-Tep and Incident On and Off a Mountain Road.
Dread Central recently spoke with the laconic Texan about how he feels being a cult icon as well as what’s up next.
DC: Thank you so much for taking time to speak with Dread Central, Joe. With your prolific writing schedule, I’m surprised you had the time.

Don Coscarelli is in development on Bubba Nosferatu but there are rumblings from the Phantasm camp that something is happening. The fiends at PhantasmCommunity.com have heard a Phantasm -related project is nearly complete. It's not the fifth installment we've been waiting for, however. What is it? We venture to guess it's a webisode of some sort. Short film? Teaser trailer to generate funds? While we continue to speculate, here's a pic, courtesy of Horror Yearbook, from the "secret Phantasm project" featuring series fave Reggie Bannister.

When Bruce Campbell portrayed a still-living Elvis in Bubba Ho-Tep, it was a rite of passage for one of the coolest guys in the business. You could see him playing Elvis many years earlier without the benefit of the sequined jumpsuit. But he decided not to return to director Don Coscareli's sequel, which is scheduled to follow the original in 2011, some nine years after Elvis and a black JFK first came into our lives from their retirement home.
So who do you get to play a perfect Bruce Campbell role if Campbell isn't available? Well, I wouldn't immediated think Hellboy, but yes, Ron Perlman has signed on for Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires, and he says there's a good chance it could start filming soon.

I'm not even sure why, but Bubba Nosferatu is one of those projects where I'm happy to keep everyone update on, no matter how big or small the details. It probably won't even get that much attention until its about to hit theaters, but I'm still inherently looking forward to it, maybe because Ron Perlman is set to star. Perlman gave an update to Fangoria (via SlashFilm) recently and it's looking pretty good, as long as everything still comes together. The last we heard, back in April, Perlman had said that shooting is "looking good for maybe late fall," but of course in Hollywood, plans like that can always fall apart at any minute. "Well, I have this window that's about to open... I just spoke to Paul Giamatti [who is set to play Elvis' manager, Colonel Tom Parker] and [director] Don Coscarelli this morning, and we're just moving the ball ...

Oh, Paul Giamatti. He's the man you can't help but love and respect. He's got acting chops on all sides of the fence, being able to play it straight and serious just as much as over-the-top ridiculous and campy -- in other words, the perfect combination. Giamatti has come a long way since he popped up as Kissing Man in Singles, and these days, he's the kind of actor who might even lead you to movies you would not have otherwise considered. But now the man needs to get a little more selective.
For ages, he's been attached to Bubba Nosferatu, a project that got immensely worrisome when Bruce Campbell exited over the screenplay (only to get Ron Perlman). It might seem like a project going nowhere, but according to the new Elvis, the film will finally play out during Perlman's Sons of Anarchy hiatus. And Giamatti is still on-board.

Speaking to Fangoria Radio, Ron Perlman has given an update on the status of Bubba Nosferatu, the vampiretastic follow-on from Don Coscarelli's Elvis vs. the Mummy gem, Bubba Ho-Tep. Apparently he will have a window into which the shoot may be squeezed, coming right up he wraps the current season of Sons of Anarchy in September. Having spoken to Coscarelli and co-star Paul Giamatti, Perlman seemed confident that they could all work it out in time and get cameras rolling. Fangoria also let slip the casting of Angus Scrimm as "a Boris Karloff-like horror star who Elvis meets up with in Las Vegas on the set of a vampire movie." This would be Claude Killgore, who we meet during the flashbacks to the 70s that make up half of the film and, knowing Coscarelli, I already pictured Scrimm in the role when I was reading the screenplay. It's...

While talking with Fangoria Radio recently to promote his new film I Sell The Dead, Hellboy star Ron Perlman gave hosts Debbie Rochon and Tony Timpone an update on the long-gestating Bubba Nosferatu project. In the Bubba Ho-tep (pictured left) sequel/prequel, Perlman will don the sequined Elvis suit previously donned by Bruce Campbell in the 2004 sleeper written and directed by Phantasm guru Don Coscarelli, who encores on the follow-up.

Bloody-Disgusting spoke exclusively to Ron Perlman last week for updates on a few of the horror-related projects he has in the work. We already gave you the scoop on Bubba Nosferatu (read about it here), so today we'll see what the actor had to say on Mutant Chronicles, Dark Country 3-D, Hellboy 3, Carjacked and Gatekeeper. How's that for an afternoon of updates? Mutant Chronicles is currently available on VOD services and will hit select theaters this Friday. Perlman discusses the plot: "What these guys came up with was rather smart and quite believable. The world was finally bereft of all nationalities and patriotism and was completely broken down into economic turns. Its all corporate, which is a soulless and heartless reality. And then of course, because these guys have such a bloodlust for power and wealth, they are constantly at war with one another..." More...

We here at IESB hear that Universal Pictures is very gung-ho about doing another Hellboy movie, but writer/director Guillermo del Toro will be quite busy making two Hobbit films, for the forseeable future.
{sidebar id=1}So, the most obvious question is, would Ron Perlman return to make another Hellboy, if Guillermo del Toro isnÂ.t involved?
In an exclusive interview for his latest project, Mutant Chronicles, we asked Ron Perlman that very question, along with what fans can expect from Season 2 of his television series Sons of Anarchy and when he hopes to start production on Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires.

Bloody-Disgusting reporter Jeff Otto just got off the phone with Ron Perlman, who was on hand to talk about his forthcoming alien battle in Mutant Chronicles. During the conversation, Jeff turned the subject to Bubba Nosferatu, the long-delayed and highly-anticipated sequel to Bubba Ho-tep that has been in the works for years now. The news is good, very, very good. You can read what Perlman had to say beyond the break. The long-delayed Bubba Ho-tep sequel Bubba Nosferatu is finally nearing a production start date. Don Coscarelli returns to write and direct again. Unfortunately, Bruce Campbell has decided to pass on the second go-round, but it's hard not to like his replacement, Ron Perlman. Also the addition of Paul Giamatti as Elvis shady manager Col. Tom Parker makes the project particularly intriguing.

With Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy II now behind us, I'm anxious to see Ron Perlman on the big screen again. I Sell the Dead won't get a big release, I'm planning on catching Mutant Chronicles via On Demand sometime this weekend, and Thomas Jane's The Dark Country doesn't have a release date yet. So what else is on his plate? One of the many projects listed on his IMDb page is one called The Devil's Tomb, directed by Jason Connery, although unfortunately it's going straight-to-dvd. Another one is the Bubba Nosferatu sequel, which we updated in October of last year, reporting that Perlman was officially set to star. Perlman spoke to SciFi Wire yesterday and gave them a few updates on both The Devil's Tomb (which will be out on DVD on May 26th) and Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires, the long in-development sequel to Don Coscarelli...

In his 28 years in film and television, it would be somewhat of an understatement to say that actor Ron Perlman has enjoyed a vast career. He’s a Golden Globe-winning actor that has worked in almost every aspect of the genre entertainment spectrum, and his latest project, Mutant Chronicles, is no exception.
Mutant Chronicles (review), directed by Simon Hunter, takes place in 2707 with the world ruled by several different corporations at war with each other. During these wars the corporations unwittingly release deadly necromutants that look to destroy the entire human race. Perlman’s character, Brother Samuel, takes it upon himself unlock the Chronicles that can help defeat the mutants and save the world.
Perlman said, “When I read the script for Mutant Chronicles, I immediately recognized that it took a very smart approach in looking at just how powerful corporations have become. I think there’s no time like...

It's been a while since we've heard anything new about Bubba Nosferatu, the sequel to Don Coscarelli's Bubba Ho Tep. There were the back and forth rumors about whether a sequel would even be made, then word that star Bruce Campbell wasn't going to be available to be a part of a sequel and that Ron Perlman would be taking his place. We got to talk with Perlman about his upcoming picture, Mutant Chronicles, and the topic changed to Bubba Nosferatu very briefly. Perlman confirmed his involvement, and gave us an update on the status of the long delayed sequel. "The script is completed." Perlman sounded happy to report. "They're moving along quite rapidly, and we're hoping to be shooting that thing sometime in the late fall." Unfortunately that was all we got the chance to ask the actor on the subject, but he sounded excited about it during...

Ron Perlman is a workhorse. The actor is involved in eight films in our database and he's showing no signs of slowing down. Yesterday, I spoke with Perlman about his latest role in Mutant Chronicles and briefly got the lowdown on two projects he has not shot yet. First is The Gatekeeper , a film Production Weekly announced a week ago. The actor was hesitant to discuss this one as his obligations to the series Sons of Anarchy may prevent him from participating in Gatekeeper . It is currently up in the air, but he sounded hopeful. Then there's Bubba Nosferatu , the sequel to Don Coscarelli's Bubba Ho-Tep . Perlman will be taking over for Bruce Campbell as Elvis, but again, no solid word yet as to when production will start. The actor hopes by this fall.

Last we heard about Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She Vampires, Ron "Hellboy" Perlman had signed on to play Elvis Presley, a role which was originally played by b-movie king Bruce Campbell in Bubba Ho Tep. But that was way back in October 2008! Today, we spoke with Perlman about his role as Brother Samuel in The Mutant Chronicles also starring Thomas Jane now on VOD and in select theaters on April 24th and we couldn't help but ask about his upcoming hunka'-hunka'-burnin'-love role as "the king" in Don Coscarelli's long awaited sequel. It's been 7 years since the original Bubba Ho Tep and apparently Perlman and crew plan on shooting the anticipated flick very soon for a release in 2011! Hit the...

Speaking of Hellboy, Shock Till You Drop brings are attention to the fact that Ron Perlman is interested in playing Elvis in Don Coscarelli’s Bubba Nosferatu, actor Paul Giamatti to Aint It Cool News. If he signs up, he’ll join Giamatti who is locked to play Col. Parker. According to Shock, Bruce Campbell has already expressed he was not going to return as the King. “Every effort was made by us,” Giamatti tells the site. “He just didn’t want to do it and he was cool about it. He just didn’t want to do it, which is a bummer, because part of the reason I love [Bubba Ho-Tep] is him...a big part of it. He’s fantastic and I’ve always loved him. There has been talk of a sequel to Bubba Ho-Tep for I don't know how long. I would venture to say that we were all pretty favorable to the idea, because more Bruce Campbell is always a good thing. But then came word that Campbell wouldn't be reprising his role as Elvis Presely in Bubba Nosferatu ... and well, who wants that?

If there's one cult classic horror movie worth mentioning on Halloween, it's Bubba Ho-Tep. While I'm not personally the biggest fan of the film, it has a cult following like no other, fueled primarily by Bruce Campbell's appearance as badass retirement home Elvis. Bubba Ho-Tep first premiered in 2003 but didn't hit DVD until 2005, eventually making a respectable $1.2 million through art house bookings. Don Coscarelli, who wrote and directed the film, has been hard at work trying to get his prequel in development as well, titled Bubba Nosferatu. But when Bruce Campbell decided not to return, they were stuck trying to figure out who they could replace him with, but they finally found him - Ron Perlman. So the story goes that Quint from Ain't It Cool News got a call from Paul Giamatti himself in order to reveal this casting tidbit. Why Paul Giamatti? Well, Giamatti is also ...

There is a pretty exciting development from the world of Bubba Ho-Tep, and it's coming from an unlikely source.
Ain't it Cool News talked to Paul Giamatti about the sequel, which will be called Bubba Nosferatu. ...You know, perhaps I should pause right there and explain what Bubba Ho-Tep is. Ok: Imagine if the real Elvis were still alive but living in a retirement home with John F. Kennedy. Only it's not really Kennedy. And JFK is black.
So it's the King of Rock n' Roll (Bruce Campbell) and the King of America's Camelot (Ossie Davis) in a retirement home...fighting an Egyptian mummy. That should do the trick, I think.
Now back to the present: Giamatti will play Col. Tom Parker in the next film, because he loved the first one so much. He's even co-producing for director Don Coscarelli, and Giamatti says that, although Campbell won't be back,...

AICN recently had a nice chat with actor Paul Giamatti, who’s been attached to star in Don Coscarelli’s “Bubba Nosferatu and the Curse of the She-Vampires,” a follow-up to “Bubba Ho-tep.”
In the original film, Elvis Presley set out to battle an ancient Egyptian mummy. Bruce Campbell starred in the lead role, but he recently said he wouldn’t return for a second film.
Well, according to Giamatti, Ron Perlman is interested in stepping as Elvis. Here’s part of what he had to say about this:
“So then he asked me if I was interested in doing this one and I was just like “You have got to be kidding me. Yeah, absolutely!” I said, “I have a little production company and we can help you guys do this” and he brought me in onboard and now we have got Ron Perlman interested in playing Elvis.”

We haven't heard much about Bubba Nosferatu, the follow up to Don Coscarelli's cult favorite Bubba Ho-Tep since Bruce Campbell decided he wasn't going to be involved. Lets be honest - the loss of Campbell was a near-fatal hit for the movie, since it was Campbell's attachment that originally drew so many people to the first movie. Bubba Nosferatu is still moving forward, with near A-lister Paul Giamatti still signed on to play Col. Parker, the famed agent to Elvis. So what's a franchise built upon Bruce Campbell playing aged Elvis supposed to do for a new King? Find another actor with an equal cult following, apparently. Giamatti graced AICN with an interview to announce who is being pursued to play the new old Elvis. The choice - Hellboy star Ron Perlman! You have to admit that's a pretty fair choice if Campbell is too busy to reprise his role.

This morning the guys at AICN had an interview with Paul Giamatti up in which he announced that Ron Perlman was looking to fill the blue suede shoes of Elvis Presley in Don Coscarelli’s Bubba Nosferatu. We told you about it cause we love you, and now we have official word from Bubba Nosferatu writer Stephen Romano on the casting!
"Yes, Ron will be playing Elvis," Romano told us. "Obviously, finding the right actor to step into the role was crucial. I think the casting choice is fucking inspired. Ron is a brilliant actor and has the right street cred, too."
So Colonel Parker is cast (Giamatti), Perlman is donning the pompadour, but who’ll be playing the titular bloodsucker? ”They're talking about another major genre star for the role of Bubba Nosferatu himself, but I can't comment on that until an official announcement is made,” Romano teased us.
