This film is something rare for an ultra low budget indie: an engaging story, well told.
The other reviews speak enough about the plot and characters, so I'll address the film-making technique itself.
I hesitate to define it by all the things it isn't, but here's a few things it DOESN'T have that help make it so good: - shaky camera - amateur acting - bad sound - overbearing soundtrack - rapid cutting to cover up poor performances. Yay!
And the list goes on. We see excellent camera work, beautifully composed shots, wonderful pacing that's natural and real, and a real sense of being on the journey with the lead character. They also let the lead be very flawed and make some bad decisions -- sometimes we like her, and sometimes we shake our heads. And sometimes she surprises us.
I'm very appreciative of a movie that has a good script, great acting, and tells a great story. They didn't shove the plot down your throat, but let you discover it naturally. And they had the good sense to give the lead actress some room and let her talent shine.
This movie works well on many levels, and is emblematic of what a few dedicated filmmakers can do with no money and a lot of talent. I urge you to go to the official site and read the filmmakers' blog. It's as well done and thoughtful as the movie itself.
In fact, if you're thinking about making a low budget movie yourself, then it should be required reading.
