Earlier this week, Dr. Cole Abaius and I were having a discussion about a new brand of director -- the super-accessible kind who are now connecting with us, and their audience through the social media site Twitter. Whereas they were previously just the folks behind the camera and in the hot seat during junket weekend prior to their release, directors like Up in the Air's Jason Reitman (@JasonReitman), The Brothers Bloom director Rian Johnson (@rcjohnso) and even that Clerks guy Kevin Smith (@ThatKevinSmith) are now just a tweet away. It is interesting to see them so connected, so close to the folks who buy tickets that pay their salaries. Then, there are the on-set tweeters. The publicist for The Expendables has been tweeting like crazy about Sly Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and everyone else who's come to that set. And Overture Films has someone on set with Breck Eisner's The Crazies (@TheCraziesFilm), tweeting live from the »

In Mira Nair's latest film, Amelia, a biopic about pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart, Joe Anderson plays Wilmer "Bill" Stultz, the pilot who helmed the first transatlantic crossing with a female passenger-Earhart-in 1928, despite his belief that a woman's place was not in the cockpit. Anderson, though, had no such qualms about flying alongside Hilary Swank, who plays Earhart in the film, as the two actors reenacted the 20-plus-hour, near-freezing flight. "Most of the time, we were sweating our asses off in leather jumpsuits, pretending to be cold," says the 27-year-old British-born Anderson, who drew attention a couple of years ago for his performances in a pair of choice indies about rock bands: Julie Taymor's valentine to the Beatles, Across the Universe, and Anton Corbijn's ode to Joy Division, Control. In addition to Amelia, Anderson recently completed Rogue's Gallery, a political satire produced by Richard Kelly, as well as The Crazies, »

John Dowdle, director of the M. Night Shyamalan-produced Devil , has enlisted Rob Hall and his Almost Human Studios to handle FX on the horror film. Hall previously worked with Dowdle on Quarantine . He's fresh off of The Crazies remake and the upcoming series Fear Clinic which he directed for FearNET. The FX vet won't divulge plot details, but he says it's one of the best scripts he has read. Shooting on Devil begins next week under Shyamalan's Night Chronicles banner. »

Giving it all he's got is the ethos that Rob Hall lives by. Since his days as monster maker for Roger Corman all the way through Buffy and Angel, Hall's creatures were scarier, freakier and more creative than his big-budget competition. About six months ago, we reported on Jason Statham being cast in the remake of the 1972 action crime-thriller, The Mechanic, about a hitman who takes on an apprentice. At the time there was word that the remake would be a remake in name only, and the story would be changed to a modern-day spy thriller. However, with the latest casting news, it appears the story will be pretty similar if not the same as the original.
Promising news, I say.
Variety is reporting that Donald Sutherland and Ben Foster (Pandorum, X-Men: The Last Stand) are set to co-star with Statham in The Mechanic remake, which is set to be directed by Simon West (Con Air - one of my favorites, Fyi ) from a screenplay by Karl Gajdusek. Foster is set to play Statham’s hitman apprentice, Steve McKenna (the original role was played by Jan-Michael Vincent), and Sutherland will play »

Rob Hall has built up quite a pedigree for himself in the horror genre over the course of the last few years. Besides fronting Almost Human FX, the company he formed back in 1996 which has gone on to provide the special effects for The Crazies , Quarantine , The Burrowers and Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles , he made his directorial debut in 2004 with the impressive drama Lightning Bug . He followed that up with this year's straight up "slasher" flick Laid To Rest and introduced horror audiences to Chromeskull. Now, he's assembled a who's who list of recognizable genre faces including Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, Danielle Harris and Lisa Wilcox for Fear Clinic , a new web exclusive series for FearNET. We recently caught up with him to get the full... »

No, it’s not yet another “Highlander” sequel/reboot or TV series, in case that’s what you were thinking. It’s called “The Quickening”, and it’s a new cop show from A&E (cause, obviously, there isn’t nearly enough cop shows on TV at the moment) set to star Radha Mitchell, known primarily for her movie roles in films like “Silent Hill”, “Surrogates”, and the upcoming “The Crazies” remake. While this will be Mitchell’s first foray onto American TV land as the lead, it won’t be the first time an actress known for her movie work decided to take the leap onto the small screen. She follows in the footsteps of other notable movie leading ladies Kyra Sedgwick (the star of TNT’s cop show “The Closer”) and Holly Hunter (the star of TNT’s other cop show “Saving Grace” — gee, starting to see a pattern here? »

Directed by: Breck Eisner
Starring: Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Danielle Panabaker, Joe Anderson
Rating: R
Release Date: February 26, 2010
Trailer Score: 6/10
My Thoughts: It’s difficult to put together a trailer like this without overtly copying from a dozen other, more original horror films. The strategy is to appeal to horror fans by recycling past successes … duh, right? So here we have The Crazies, a remake of the 1973 film of the same name, looking like a cross between Silent Hill (Ms. Mitchell, you’re back?) and 28 Days Later. The trailer is average to slightly above average, but it does relay the message that this is everything you’ve ever seen before if you like that sort of thing (flying guts, loonies wielding pitchforks, scared women huddling in closets, etc.). However, using Gary Jules’ mournful “Mad World” in the last twenty seconds was a nice touch.

The remake machine keeps getting its groove on all over the 1970s and 80s and now we've got a trailer for the redo of one of George Romero's lesser known (compared to his Dead flicks) movies, The Crazies. Both the original and the remake revolve around - what else - the American military screwing something up and causing people to die, go crazy, and commit murder. More accurately, a military plane crashes, polluting the water supply of a small town with a chemical weapon that causes either death or insanity. As you'll see in the trailer below, the longer people are affected by it, the more like a zombie they start to look. But they're not zombies. Honest. Now I can't claim to be a fan of the original, but I can say that this movie looks badass. I'm a big Tim Olyphant supporter and he looks like he's nailing the role he was born to »

It all started out so well. Timothy Olyphant is the man of the law, the local townsfolk are enjoying the start of the baseball season, and everything is sunny. When one of their own hits the field with a gun, however, he has no choice but to shoot the guy and save the rest. And then more folks start acting strange, things get eerie, people die, the government flies in, and the fight for life begins. It's the classic horror setup.
Then there's a quick cut and the music starts with f minor. Softly but surely, the '80s song that was slowed down and made infamous through a montage of tears plays as people run through burning streets, as the military moves in, as people are strapped to gurneys, as they all fight to stay alive. Yes, it might be a "Mad World," but Gary Jules is not suited for it. »

I never saw the Romero original. In fact, I’ve never even heard of it until the remake was announced. As such, I have no emotional ties to the original, so I’m not at all decrying this remake from Breck Eisner, who doesn’t exactly have a stellar resume, but when you’ve got Timothy Olyphant and genre fave Radha Mitchelle, how could you go wrong? Okay, plenty of ways to still go wrong, but I’m liking what I’m seeing from this first trailer for the movie. The movie doesn’t look or feel like a world beater, but as long as it’s tense and there’s plenty of thrills, I’m in like Flynn. A husband and wife in a small Midwestern town find themselves battling for survival as their friends and family descend into madness in The Crazies. A mysterious toxin in the water »

Well, I'll give the trailer for The Crazies this much: it's the first movie trailer that has ever made me think about Adam Lambert. I'm embarrassed to admit that I'm ever aware of the glam-rock American Idol contestant, but he was my first thought when the Crazies trailer made ballsy use of the Tears for Fears song "Mad World," which was one of Lambert's staples during his time on the show. Yeah, I know, just ignore me and watch the trailer below, or in high-res at Apple.com. It's really a pretty snazzy trailer, dispensing with setup to lead straight into the crazy action, which happens when seemingly innocent townspeople suddenly go all bloodthirsty, and Timothy Olyphant is the sheriff who is the only man who can stop it. The action looks great and relentless, and if I weren't such a scaredy-cat when it comes to horror, I might even »

First, we obtained the pretty radical poster for the remake of The Crazies. Timothy Olyphant stars as the inhabitants of a small Iowa town suddenly plagued by insanity and then death after a mysterious toxin contaminates their water supply. Now, we've got the trailer and it is 2 minutes in duration and all I have to say is...holy shit. This looks amazing. Usually when you hear the word "remake," you think of a corruption of the original. Not here. I think Overture Films have done it right. There's an intensity and a heart pounding quality about it. The only thing I fear is that this trailer shows too much but it was a nice viewing with Mad World being played in the background. »

I cannot say enough good things after watching this trailer for The Crazies. As soon as Timothy Olyphant took to the baseball field, I knew I had to see this film. Okay, I did have one issue with it. The trailer features the song "Mad World" originally by Tears for Fears, covered by Gary Jules. You might remember the song from Donnie Darko. Honestly, I've just heard that song so many times because of Darko. I seriously don't want to hear it for maybe 5 years or so. Anyway,... »

Overture has debuted the second teaser poster for Breck Eisner's remake of The Crazies that stars Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Danielle Panabaker, Joe Anderson, Joe Reegan, and a whole town full of crazies. The poster doesn't feature any faces and is a follow-up to the first teaser from February. Kind of reminds me of the first teaser poster for The Invasion - I just hope this turns out much better than that movie (which was also coincidentally kind of a remake). It's a damn cool design and I like the look of it, I just want to see a trailer or more photos first, especially since this doesn't live up to craziness the original poster anyway. The story revolves around the inhabitants of a small Iowa town who are suddenly beset by death and insanity after a plane crash lets loose a mysterious secret biological weapon into the water supply. »
