New director finds a home on remake of The Orphanage

Among the many horror movie remakes in the pipeline is a new version of the brilliantly atmospheric Spanish ghost story The Orphanage.

The award-winning debut feature by Juan Antonio Bayona was released in 2007 and New Line quickly snapped up the rights with the intention of doing an American remake.

The project now appears to have a new director, with Variety reporting that Mark Pellington is in the hotseat. Pellington previously directed thriller Arlington Road, superb supernatural chiller The Mothman Prophecies and comedy drama Henry Poole is Here.

Back in 2007, New Line had said the remake would be produced by Guillermo del Toro, who was a producer and creative supervisor on the original, and in August last year, Larry Fessenden was hired as the director and began co-writing the screenplay with del Toro.

Fessenden previously helmed 1997 vampire film Habit, 2001 horror flick Wendigo (about the man-beast of Indian legend) and the 2006 thriller The Last Winter, »

The Orphanage Remake Gets a Director

When American movie studios discover an effective foreign horror movie, their first instinct is to schedule a remake. Such is the case with the creepy Spanish horror movie The Orphanage, directed by Juan Antonio Bayona and produced by Guillermo Del Toro, which followed a woman who takes over the orphanage where she was raised to find that the same imaginary friend who terrorized her as a child is now friends with her son.

Variety reports that the remake has found a director in Mark Pellington (Arlington Road and The Mothman Prophecies). Del Toro is clearly interested in seeing a decent remake — he's serving as producer and co-writing the script with Larry Fessenden (The Last Winter).

Back in August, Kate informed us that the Spanish film, The Orphanage, found another home and was set to be remade into an English-language film. Guillermo Del Toro produced the original and has a great deal of involvement with this remake. He reportedly handpicked Actor-producer-director Larry Fessenden (Wendigo, The Last Winter) to direct the film. Both wrote the script, but it looks like Fessenden has tapped out of the director’s spot.
