The Whores Have Eyes (Nsfw XXX DVD Review)

21 December 2009 3:26 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

I often find myself equating narrative porn with the Saw film franchise. It’s cute that they try to go for some sort of story but, ultimately, all I really want to see are the scenes where bodily fluids are spurting across the room. If I’m ever opting to watch one of these features, I do so with a very specific agenda in mind and that agenda is not aided by the contemptibly tedious performances of failed models and sitcom actors whose idea of fine drama includes raising an eyebrow after each line of dialog. Thankfully however, this is not always the case with pornography that spoofs popular film and television. Such porn parodies often tend to go more for laughs than loads (tongue and cheek hit Playmate Of The Apes comes to mind). So, when I heard Hustler Video had produced a pornographic parody of Wes Craven’s »

Rinsch to Direct ‘Black Lagoon’ Remake?

15 December 2009 5:08 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

If this news turns out to be true, I’m more than a little excited: it seems that Ridley Scott protege/son-in-law Carl Erik Rinsch, also known as the man briefly attached to direct the next Alien film, is in talks to helm a remake of 1954’s Creature From the Black Lagoon.

I know what you’re going to say already. Excited about a remake? For shame!

But let’s get something straight: if remakes are going to be a ceaseless avenue of profit (as they always have been in Hollywood), then we should place them in the hands of young, talented directors. Rinsch hasn’t had his chance to shine in the limelight, but look at what Alexandre Aja did with The Hills Have Eyes, for crying out loud!

Creature From the Black Lagoon will be produced by Marc Abraham, Eric Newman, and Gary Ross. Rinsch will make his debut with 47 Ronin, »

Aussie horror Dying Breed: Blu-ray Review

8 December 2009 10:04 AM, PST | 24framespersecond.net | See recent 24FramesPerSecond news »

Director: Jody Dwyer. Review: Adam Wing. It’s Australia’s turn to get down under your skin with Jody Dwyer’s twisted vision of terror, The Hills Have Eyes has a lot to answer for, and Dying Breed proves once again that keeping it in the family is rarely a good thing in the world of horror. Convinced that Tasmanian tigers still exist, and determined to finish the work that her sister started, zoologist Nina (Mirrah Foulkes) sets off on an expedition with her partner Matt, their financier Jack and his girlfriend, Rebecca. An interesting array of characters, not to mention wilfully annoying, between them they have also starred in the likes of Wolf Creek, Snakes On A Plane and Saw. Not exactly strangers to the world of torment and torture then… Their quest leads them deep into isolated territory, which is now inhabited by the descendants of Alexander Pearce »

Terror Tidbits (Fango #289): What’s Scary?

30 November 2009 1:06 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

All my life I’ve been going to see scary movies, beginning with 1950s black-and-white monsterfests like The Black Scorpion and Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers (where the alien invaders look very much like the prawns in District 9), and although much has changed in my life since the days when it cost a quarter to get in and the butter on the popcorn was real, I find myself asking the same three questions.

First, why do so many so-called horror movies, even those with big budgets (maybe especially those with big budgets) not work? Second, why do genre fans such as myself so often go in with high hopes and come out feeling unsatisfied…and, worse, unscared? Third, and most important, why is it that others—sometimes those most unheralded others, with teensy budgets and unknown, untried actors—do work, surprising us with terror and amazement?

Oh, and here »

'The Road' Explores the Knife-Edge of Human Entropy

28 November 2009 12:00 AM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

The post-apocalyptic drama The Road begins with shots of barking dogs, blooming flowers, and nuzzling horses, but it is soon revealed that these everyday pleasures are fading memories for its protagonists. With a palette of grays and browns, it quickly shifts to the leafless trees and broken ground of a wasteland that has only barely survived an unnamed catastrophe. The world smolders when it doesn't all-out burn, and the vestiges of humanity struggle to survive and retain the things that made them human.

Amid bands of roving cannibals, an unnamed father (Viggo Mortensen, Eastern Promises) and his son (Kodi Smit-McPhee, Romulus, My Father) have left their home behind and are traveling toward the coast with hopes that the warmer weather and proximity to the ocean will provide a haven. The Man remembers the world before, but The Boy was born to The Man's wife (Charlize Theron, Hancock) after the apocalypse. »

The Best Non-Dysfunctional Movie Families ... in Honor of Thanksgiving

26 November 2009 6:03 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

In honor of Thanksgiving, we're recalling one of our favorite turkey day-themed posts from last year.

By: Jette Kernion

A few years ago, I wrote a Cinematical Seven on my favorite dysfunctional families in films. Everyone has a crazy messed-up movie family they love, whether it's the Hoovers in Little Miss Sunshine or the Bullocks in My Man Godfrey or the Corleones in the Godfather saga. I thought that this year, it would be fun to make a list of families that got along, worked together, and supported one another. You know, happy families ... but not dull, one-dimensional bundles of endless cheer.

It's a lot more difficult to find seven movies with happy-but-not-sappy families than it is to find the screwed-up kind, especially if you are looking for something more interesting than the Cleavers. Since I'm visiting my relatives for the Thanksgiving holidays, I asked them for suggestions. They were all very helpful, »

New Ultra-Gory Pics from Piranha 3D

10 November 2009 10:26 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

When I first heard that Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Haute Tension) was writing and directing a remake of the classic 70’s Joe Dante film Piranha, I thought “Hmmm. This could be a good thing.” Then I read that he was doing it in 3D and I thought “Dang! I thought this could be a good thing; guess I was wrong.”

The remake, cleverly titled Piranha 3D, is set in the fictional location of Lake Victoria during spring break (think Lake Havasu), and after a underwater earthquake releases a prehistoric flesh-eating fish, “an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area’s new razor-toothed residents.” Sherriff Julie Forester must risk all that she loves and knows to destroy the piranha “save the lake and her family from totally being devoured.”

I'll admit, hearing that The Hills Have Eyes' Alexandre Aja is directing a 3-D remake of the camptastic 1978 horror flick Piranha was a bit perplexing. It's much the same way I reacted when I first heard that Piranha 2 was helmed by James Cameron. Just what the hell is it about these fish that’s so damn appealing? Dread Central has a first look at some shots from the new film, which you may guess, is about a bunch of piranha eating a bunch of hot people. One a »
