United Kingdom born filmmaker Adam Mason took time to answer a few questions on his body of work. From one of his earliest features (Dust, 2001) to his latest ("Empire of Dirt"), Mason talks about some of the highlights in his career and some of his collaborations, in this interview. Fans of his film are encouraged to have a quick read as Mason talks about what is coming up next for him and his filmmaking career. (Mike Allen) Just to get readers up to speed, I wanted to talk about a bit about your background and your previous films. You graduated from film school, in the United Kingdom and quickly went into your first production, Dust (2001). What was it like shooting your first film? (Adam Mason) My first movie was actually called The 13th Sign and we shot that back in 1999. It was completely awful. As was Dust, the second feature I did right after.

I can’t imagine what it must feel like to return home after a family holiday, only to find your house as well as your belongings trashed by an intruder. That’s exactly what happens to Aaron (Jeremy Sisto, Wrong Turn) and Beth (Kate Ashfield, Shaun of the Dead) Miller in Adam Mason’s (Broken) latest thriller, Hangman.
However, unlike most cases, this isn’t the work of a vagrant or thief, this is something much more sinister. You see, the person who broke in to the Miller family home, never left and with the help of cameras set up around the house, he can monitor their every move and eavesdrop on every conversation. Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

UK filmmaker Adam Mason, of films like Broken, The Devil’s Chair and Pig, is known for grueling, brutal, often graphic visions. This year, he hits Austin’s annual SXSW, in the Midnighters section appropriately, with Hangman, a film that seems to marry said visions with Pov/found footage for what hopefully amounts to a scuzzy, unsettling affair. Starring Jeremy Sisto, Hangman…

Adam Mason has long been one of my favorite independent filmmakers. Mason made me take notice with his film Broken, that was released under the since-defunct Dimension Extreme line of home video releases, and then made me a lifer with what I would argue is his best film, The Devil’s Chair, which was released back in 2007 by Sphe(Sony). Adam also made an experimental film that has yet to see a proper release, titled Pig, in which the first three fourths of the film are captured in one continuous shot. Around the time that film was ready, Adam was hanging out in the discussion boards of various horror websites, offering anyone that wished to see his film Pig a means to do so. I met Adam around that time, and we started talking about his film, among other things, and he turned out to be one of the coolest...

Sorry Oscars. But after the Indie Spirit Awards, the number two spot in terms of Award Season importance are the Cinema Eye Honors. Seems like it was only yesterday when Aj Schnack & Thom Powers teamed up for one basic, logical concept: an event that would reward yearly output of documentary film in a rightfully sound manner. With the wind in their sails, the 6th annual edition was held last night and deservingly so, adding to its double wins at the Idfa and Sundance, it is 5 Broken Cameras that took the top honors for Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Feature Filmmaking. Co-directed by Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi – political activism via you guessed it, five video cameras. The film was released via Kino Lorber.

Long-time FEARnet fave Mortiis is known around the world for his brutal brand of industrial rock, but his skill with dark experimental electronic soundscapes has led to collaborations with horror filmmakers like Adam Mason (Broken, The Devil's Chair), and he's got a couple of horror-themed music videos waiting in the wings to promote his band's upcoming album The Great Deceiver (check out our in-depth interview with Mortiis for more details and some glimpses behind the scenes). During that album's recording sessions, the track “Geisteskrank” was born, and that haunting piece serves as the pulsing black heart of Vardøger, a shocking new short film from controversial Norwegian director Reinert Kiil.
Mortiis describes the collaboration as “sleazy, strange, disturbing, and extremely violent,” with the music “sonically fused” to the unsettling visions, which he believes reveal the filmmaker's personal demons. “I can relate to that, the grit and the decadence. It was a...

From my experience, horror films are always the most interesting but least attended films at smaller film festivals as festival audiences seem to be more interested in stories about losing your virginity than werewolves and zombies. Colin Firth is joining Reese Witherspoon in Atom Egoyan's drama based on the real-life case of the West Memphis Three, "Devil's Knot."
Deadline has the news, and reports that the story centers on Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, Jr. who were convicted of the murder of three 8-year-old boys. The case was sensationalized with reports of devil worship and ritualized sacrifice, despite lack of physical evidence. Witherspoon will play a mother of one of the murdered boys, while Firth will take on the role of the heroic investigator who helped the Memphis Three when no one else would, uncovering important evidence for their defense.

Joe Johnston has chosen his followup project to last year's Captain America: The First Avenger and it's Not Safe For Work . The Hollywood Reporter says he'll helm the low-budget thriller for Blumhouse Pictures and Universal. Scripted by Simon Boyes and Adam Mason ( The Devil's Chair , Broken ), the project has a paralegal facing off against a killer from a rival corporation intent on destroying information in his office. To be shot for roughly two-and-a-half million dollars, Not Safe For Work should represent a very different kind of filmmaking than Johnston has shown in the past with films like The Wolfman , Jurassic Park III and Jumanji .

Joe Johnston, who directed for my money what was the best Marvel movie since 2008′s Iron Man with Captain America: The First Avenger, has chose his next film and won’t be a Steve Rogers sequel.
The Hollywood Reporter say Johnston has signed on to direct the low-budget thriller Not Safe For Work for Universal and Blumhouse Pictures.
Written by Brit writers Simon Boyes and Adam Mason (The Devil’s Chair, Broken), Not Safe For Work (although it might go with the title in letters, Nsfw) follows a paralegal facing off against a killer from a rival corporation intent on destroying important files.
Budgeted at just $2.5 million, the film is a complete left turn from Johnston who usually helms big profile $100 million pictures, his CV including The Wolfman, Jurassic Park III and Jumanji. He has challenged himself to helm a micro film and he has struck a healthy pay deal...

A new thriller is on its way from the director of Captain America, and we have the scoop for you right here. Read on for all of the - hopefully - gory details.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joe Johnston has signed on for his first project since directing last year’s Marvel superhero hit, Not Safe For Work.
Written by British scribes Adam Mason and Simon Boyes (Blood River, Broken, Luster), Nsfw centers on a young paralegal who is trapped in the office with a killer on a mission to destroy files for another corporation.
The film is a micro-budgeted thriller from micro-budget master Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Pictures. Not Safe For Work is set up at Universal via Blumhouse’ first-look deal with the studio.

True story: A couple weeks back I spent a whirlwind couple of days in La for a block of meetings and one of the nights there I was whisked away to a whiskey bar in some part of town where I had never been before. Not even two minutes after walking through the door - literally - my pocket buzzed with a message from a phone number that I didn't recognize. "Todd, are you in La? At a bar in Silver Lake?"

While fans of Broken and The Devil's Chair director Adam Mason have been awaiting the arrival of his dark comedy Luster - a film that has finally completed a lengthy post production only recently - the director himself has been cooking up a little something on the sly.
Together with frequent collaborator Andrew Howard, Mason has completed an entirely different film during the waiting period for Luster. Shot on the cheap and on the sly, with any word kept carefully out of the press until the film was complete Pig is a grueling exercise in single take horror, a savage satire on American gender roles built around a lunatic central performance from Andrew Howard. With the run time dominated by a single 70+ minute take this is something entirely new from Mason, a technical experiment that builds on the themes and approach of his earlier work.
But where to see it?...

Not Alone, the debut feature from British FX artist-turned-director Tristan Versluis, is midway through its three-week shoot. Though set in 1957 on the East Coast of the United States, Versluis and his cast and crew are shooting in locations around England; he sent along a few exclusive early photos, which you can see below.
Lucy Benjamin, familiar to UK audiences from five years on the BBC soap Eastenders, stars as Eli, an emotionally damaged young woman who arrives at an abandoned family cabin with a head full of nightmares and a car trunk full of unburied secrets. Before long, her nightmares turn real and the things that stalk her mind become the walking, talking demons that are found inside everyone’s soul. Trapped by her own doing—or imprisoned by some unseen motion set in action by someone else—Eli soon starts to spiral into a reality she has lost control of many times before.

You can see the influence of the Southern Gothic greats Flannery O’Connor and William Faulkner in Blood River, and while one could note the former’s short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and novel Wise Blood as specific references, I think the MacBeth soliloquy that inspired the title of one of Faulkner’s masterpieces is more apropos: Blood River (screened at this year’s Fantasia festival) is “full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” Harsh words, indeed, but at least I left out the “It is a tale told by an idiot” part.
Let me take a step back for a moment. Blood River is a decent movie reminiscent of The Hitcher that’s disastrously derailed by a terrible conclusion that had me leaving the theater frustrated and shaking my head in irritated disappointment. But let me take another step back and give you the story setup.

- British writer/director Adam Mason's previous films, Broken and The Devil's Chair, have been described as many things, but subtle is not one of them. With Blood River, Mason and regular writing partner Simon Boyes have done a complete one-eighty (well, maybe one-forty) from the brutality and gore of their prior efforts and have delivered a psychological thriller with religious undertones. Clark (Ian Duncan, Creep) and Summer (Tess Panzer, in her first starring role) are a young couple on a road trip through the Nevada desert on their way to tell her parents that Summer is pregnant. When one of their tires has a blowout and the only soul around is a hitchhiker (Andrew Howard, The Devil's Chair) they had rather rudely brushed off earlier, the table is set for an intense tale of sin and retribution that leaves the audience wondering who the true hero of the movie is.

Fantasia Festival is North America [1]’s premiere (and largest) genre [2] film [3] festival [4]. It is also my favorite film festival and so I could not wait to share the highlights of this years line up. Below is just some of the films we will be reviewing on our upcoming podcasts. Best Worst Movie - Montreal premiere, hosted by director Michael Paul Stephenson and the actor George Hardy Unbeknownst to him, a dentist living in a small town in Alabama has an army of fans who worship him. The reason behind his clandestine popularity? He was a one-time actor who played a lead role in a movie that is now widely regarded as being amongst the worst films of all time: Troll 2. When he hears that the film was being shown at a rep cinema, he attends the screening. This decision leads him on a truly surprising and life-changing journey. Funny and moving,...

While we wait for the schedule for Fantasia 2009 to be finalized, we did receive a couple of press release announcing the fest's line-up, and per usual, those of you who are planning to attend are in for one helluva genre extravaganza.
First up is a bit of news about the fest's extended schedule: Due to a veritable deluge of feature presentations, Fantasia is extending its 13th edition for two extra days and will therefore be taking place from July 9th to the 29th at Concordia University’s Hall Theatre. As North America’s largest genre film festival, Fantasia will once again make good on its promise to deliver diversity, innovation, entertainment, food for thought and a good dose of eccentric and biting humour.
Next is a message from Fantasia's Co-Director of International Programming, Mitch Davis, highlighting some of this year’s spotlights:

New York City’s VisionFest 09, which bills itself as “The Other Festival,” takes place June 17-21 at Tribeca Cinemas (54 Varick St.), and like any self-respecting film event, it has some scares in its lineup. The most notable will be the NYC premiere of Blood River, the latest feature from Broken and The Devil’S Chair’s Adam Mason.
Blood River revolves around a couple whose seemingly perfect marriage begins to unravel after they suffer a blowout while driving through the desolate Nevada desert. They come upon an abandoned town, and a mysterious stranger who begins to deconstruct their lives even more. The movie screens on Friday, June 19 (accompanied by two shorts) at 9:30 p.m.
Serving as the opening-night attraction on Wednesday, June 17 at 8 p.m. is Dominic Perez’s feature debut Evil Things. This indie chiller (which we first told you about here) follows five college students whose weekend...

Fans of Broken Blood River and The Devil's Chair get ready for more from screenwriter Simon Boyes as Bloody-Disgusting has learned that he'll be taking a small break from working with Adam Mason to bring us Dark Island, a new horror film that begins shooting in Los Angeles next week. If the name Adam Mason sounds familiar, then congratulations, you're a serious horror fan. While his two best features (Broken and The Devil's Chair) got a fair deal of attention on the festival circuit, Mason has yet to "break out" with a mainstream flick. His next one is a fine thriller called Blood River, plus he's also putting the final touches on another film called Luster. And he's got a few colorful studio projects on the back burner that just might make Mason more of a household name. Well, a horror household name anyway! Scott: So before we start in with Broken and The Devil's Chair, fill us in on your early experience, your short films, and those features that you don't really love...

Oh god. We’re just days away from Valentine’s Day. You’re in one of two camps. On one side you’ve got a guy, or a girl, or both, and you have a really nice evening all planned out. On the other side you’ve got guys like me who veil their hopelessness under the guise of disgust with the commercialization of a special day commemorating our love to each other and why the hell should it be just one day, every day should be Valentine’s Day! Utter nonsense like that.
And so Tristan Versluis, the guy who did all the gore effects on Adam Mason’s Broken, simply asks in his short film, We have all been there, a desperate act of love, the ultimate gesture of your devotion to the person you long after the most. But how will that person deal with your precious heart?...

We’ve been keeping an eye on Luster, the latest from Devil’s Chair, Broken and Blood River writer-director duo of Simon Boyes and Adam Mason - regular podcasters on this site - and today our patience was rewarded with an exclusive first look at the sales promo for the picture. Now, this is not a trailer per se, but a reel prepared to present and sell the film at the recently concluded American Film Market. It hasn’t been through post production yet so it’s still a bit ragged around the edges in parts but it’s more than enough to show that Mason has taken a surprising direction with this one, leaving the intense horror of his previous pictures behind in favor of absurd black comedy.

**Please Note: This will be at the top for a while; be sure to scroll down for updated news stories!** Horror may currently be in a slump, but the 2008 American Film Market has shown a huge light at the end of the tunnel. This year showcased a record number of horror titles and Dread Central was on hand to catch a great deal of them. Some were good, some were bad but all showed that this genre still has plenty of lifeblood left. Many exhibitors were also kind enough to show us movie promos, while others coldly showed us the door (Lesbian Vampire Killers, I’m looking at you). The most promising show previews were easily Night of the Demons and Clive Barker’s Dread, with plenty of new projects being announced. Check out our full Afm '08 coverage here.

Yes, I’m biased as all hell on this one - I’m in the credits as a co-producer - but today was my first chance to see footage from Niko Pueringor and Sam Gorski’s Infected, the feature debut from the team behind Greenside, working from a script by Broken and The Devil’s Chair scribe Simon Boyes. Now, this reel is completely raw - they’re still in principal photography right now and actually shot this and prepared some basic special effects for it while on set - but there’s an awful lot in there to like. The action sequences are convincing, there’s more martial arts featured than I expected, producer Eric Lim’s gone and gotten himself all roughed up for his on-screen role, the cast look solid and Gorski and Pueringor prove again to have a solid cinematic eye and unusual gifts when it comes to special effects.

Just last week we brought you the first official images from producer Eric Lim and directors Niko Pueringor and Sam Gorski’s Infected - the scifi horror hybrid feature length debut from the core team behind indie short Greenside - and this week we’ve got a quartet of poster images from the film. Scripted by Simon Boyes (Broken, The Devil’s Chair, Blood River) the film revolves around an experimental bio-weapon run amok on a sparsely populated island and is in production now.
When I posted the first stills from this last week I noted that I’m a co-producer on the project - though not a hugely hands-on one - and the Twitch connections actually get a little deeper with the arrival of this new artwork as all four poster images are the creations of one Omar Hauksson, who regular readers here will recognize as our very own Swarez.

In the interest of full disclosure here I should probably declare right up front that I actually have a producer’s credit on the latest to come from Eric Lim and the crew of film makers behind Zero Trooper F and Greenside. In our recent interview with director Adam Mason about his latest horror outing to hit DVD, The Devil’s Chair (DVD review), our man Uncle Creepy managed to squeeze a bit of intel out of the man about his next feature, Luster.
”It’s about a normal guy who lives in La who starts to suspect that someone’s trying to fuck with him. We’ve been outspoken supporters of Brit film makers Adam Mason and Simon Boyes (Broken, The Devil’s Chair, Blood River) in these pages for a good while now so when Mason fired me an email last week asking if I wanted to take a look at one of his early short films I, of course, said yes. The film is Prey, shot on location in Norway in 2003 before the duo got to work on Broken. Loosely based on the true story of Robert Hansen - a serial killer who took a number of strippers and prostitutes into remote regions of Alaska so that he could hunt them down - it is everything you’d expect from Mason - uncomfortably gritty and realistic, grueling stuff - and also one thing that you might not expect: very funny. Mason passed us a high quality version fo the short for our Video Player,...
