Joe Macbeth (James McAvoy) is the hard-working head chef of a high-class restaurant in Glasgow. The restaurant is owned by famous television chef Duncan Docherty (Vincent Regan), who gets all the fame for Joe's hard work. Working with Joe at the restaurant are his wife and maitre d' Ella (Keeley Hawes), his friend and fellow cook Billy (Joeseph Milson), Duncan's son, working as a waiter, Malcolm (Toby Kebbell) and head waiter Peter Macduff (Richard Armitage).

While Joe and Billy are out having drinks, they run into three strange garbage collectors who predict that the restaurant will gain three Michelin stars and Joe will gain ownership of the restaurant. As they leave, they add that Billy's sons will also own the restaurant. Astounded, Joe and Billy head back to the restaurant. Ducan is there and informs them that the restaurant, in fact, got three stars. In addition, he tells all of them that Malcolm will be inheriting the restaurant after he retires. Joe tells Ella about the garbagemen, she tries to goad him into killing Duncan by insulting the celebrity chef. Joe looses his temper, when Ella calms him down and convinces him of the plan. The next day, Joe fires thier dishwashers and hires two Serbian immigrants as replacements. Duncan decides to stay at Joe's and Ella's house. Ella decides to frame the new dishwashers for the murder. After Joe kills Duncan, Ella calls the Serbians pretending to be Immigration.Frightened, the two dishwashers flee, making themselves look guilty.

In the wake of the murder, Joe gets Duncan's position on TV and becomes owner of the restaurant. However, he soon becomes increasingly paranoid about Billy, whom the garbage collecters said would have sons who would own the restaurant. After discovering that Billy will be going out bicycle riding with his son, Joe gets a hitman to kill Billy.

Meanwhile, the rest of Joe's staff, including Peter and Malcolm, are having dinner at the restaurant. Ella, who is now being kept out of the loop of Joe's plans, asks where Billy is. Joe irritably waves her question away. However, suddenly he gets a video message from Billy. Horrified, Joe sees that it is the park Billy went cycling at. As Peter picks it up, Joe snatches it away violently. In his panic, he sees a phatom Billy sitting in the chair he was previously occupying. Ella manages to get the staff out the restaurant.

Peter, convinced that Joe murdered Duncan, shares his view with Malcolm. Malcom also dislikes Joe, who generally picks on him, agrees that something must be done.

Shaken by the sight of Billy's ghost, and by the fact that his hitman didn't kill Billy's son, Joe visits the garbagemen again. Going to inquire about Billy, the garbagemen warn him to be careful of Peter Macduff and that he will be invincible until pigs fly. Slighlty more settled by this, Joe gets his hitman to kill Peter. Ella, meanwhile, is starting to crack under the guilt of Duncan's and Billy's murders. Unable to take it any longer, she jumps of the restaurant roof and kills herself.

The hitman arrives at Peter's house, but doesn't find the head waiter. Instead, he kills Peter's wife and children. When Peter discovers this, he realizes it is the work of Joe.

After Joe receives news that Ella killed herself, he finds that he feels nothing about it. Sending his staff away, he starts to leave. Peter, however, stayed behind to get revenge. He tires to attack Joe with a kitchen knife, but Joe throws him off and laughs. Picking up his own knife, he mocks Peter and says that he's invincible until pigs fly. Coincedentally, a police helicopter starts to land on the restaurant roof. A colloquial name for policemen are pigs, and Joe realizes the garbagemen tricked him. Finally, Peter fatally stabs Joe.

In the end, Malcolm becomes the head chef, owner and television star of the restaurant. Going out to smoke, he sees the garbagemen as well. Also, he sees Billy's son on his bicycle, looking somewhat determined.
