Will 'Red' be So Good Not Even Summit Can Mess It Up?

13 November 2009 1:15 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Let's be honest, without Twilight we probably wouldn't even be talking about Summit Entertainment any longer. They have, of course, been around much longer than most of us realize with films such as Memento, American Pie, Mr. and#038; Mrs. Smith, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as part of their production company cred. However, as distributors they have Twilight and the modest hit in Knowing (which they handled domestically and not internationally). Beyond that what are we really talking about?

They managed to squander what I understand to be a rather entertaining teen comedy in Sex Drive, Push bombed, Astro Boy is still in theaters but you wouldn't know it, Sorority Row (a teen horror with the promise of nudity) earned $11 million and the sin of all sins, Summit's 17%-Rotten Tomatoes rated Fly Me To The Moon made more money at the box-office »

Red adds Julian McMahon, Brian Cox, Richard Dreyfuss, Ernest Borgnine

13 November 2009 6:59 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Summit's adaptation of the DC/Wildstorm comic book miniseries Red is adding four new cast members.

Julian McMahon (who played Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four films), Brian Cox (the villainous Stryker in X2: X-Men United), Richard Dreyfuss and film and TV veteran Ernest Borgnine (pictured) are in negotiations to join the film, according to Heat Vision.

Red was a three-book series in 2003 and 2004, which was written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by Cully Hamner.

It tells the story of a former black-ops CIA agent (played by Bruce Willis) living a quiet life in retirement until hi-tech assassins are ordered to kill him for knowing too much.

McMahon would play a Vice President with a dark side who is at the center of a shadow conspiracy; Cox is a former Cold War spy and nemesis of Willis; Dreyfuss will be a wealthy man who builds a fortune out of lucrative »

'Travelling Pants' Scribe Whips Up Past-Life Romance

11 November 2009 12:45 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Writer Ann Brashares did a pretty well for herself when she wrote about a pair of magical pants that kept friendships together. And she might do even better on her next go. Variety reports that her new series has stirred up a bidding battle, and New Regency has come out on top.

My Name is Memory -- which is slated to hit shelves next June -- will be the first part of a trilogy about multi-life romance. It all focuses on a college-age couple that has some serious history. "Turns out their souls have been reincarnated over hundreds of years, but these soulmates keep losing each other. While he remembers the details of their previous lives -- and his often exasperating attempts to connect with her romantically -- she cannot recall the events of those past lives." Initial comparisons are bringing up the likes of Twilight and The Time Traveler's Wife. »

Rachel McAdams May Be Black Cat in 'Spider-Man 4'

9 November 2009 11:38 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Words on the street are, Rachel McAdams is in talks to join "Spider-Man 4" to portray another lead female. Mania has obtained information from sources who stated that "The Time Traveler's Wife" actress has met the film's producers to discuss her possibility to play villain character called Black Cat, the alter ego of Felicia Hardy.

The site additionally has reported that Spider-Man may deal with two nemeses in the upcoming movie project. According to a source who gave the movie's update to the site, Columbia Pictures has also been casting for a male villain, but the details have not been known yet.

Previously, there was a rumor that The Lizard will be the only villain in the fourth "Spider-Man" film. However, Dylan Baker, who has been confirmed to play Dr. Curt Connors who eventually becomes The Lizard, remained mum when asked whether or not his character will be seen as the lead baddie. »

Rachel McAdams To Play The Black Cat in Spider-Man 4?

9 November 2009 12:13 PM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Mania reports that "reliable sources" have revealed that Rachel McAdams (The Time Traveler's Wife, the upcoming Sherlock Holmes) has met with Spider-Man 4 producers and may play "Felicia Hardy, known to comic fans as The Black Cat."

In the comic books, The Black Cat is a thief that ultimately becomes romantically involved with Spider-Man. Spider-Man 3 tried to create a romantic triangle between Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire), Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst), and Gwen Stacy (Bryce Dallas Howard). Spider-Man 4 may try the same tactic, though it will also contain a second villain, with the sources revealing that Sony is looking to cast a male in that role, debunking rumors that Spider-Man's professor, Dr. Curt Conners (Dylan Baker), will finally become The Lizard.

Then again, can a rumor overturn another rumor? Stay tuned as we for more Spider-Man 4 updates and we'll sort all this out.

Mary Louise Parker Brings Heat to Adaptation of Warren Ellis’ Red

5 November 2009 7:34 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The cast for the adaptation of Warren Ellis' comic miniseries Red appears to be filling out quite nicely. It began with Bruce Willis, who was signed on from the beginning. Then in April, Morgan Freeman joined the project. Then earlier this week, the lovely Helen Mirren signed on. But wait, that's not all... According to THR's Heat Vision, Red is adding two more great names to the project. John C. Reilly -- who will play a retired CIA agent paranoid about being assassinated; and Weeds temptress Mary Louise Parker, who will play the love interest of Bruce Willis' character. Willis will play Paul Moses, whose plight can be described in the official synopsis below: As a C.I.A. operative, Paul Moses’s unique talent for killing took him around the world, from one hotspot to another, carrying out the deadly orders of his superiors. John C. Reilly and Mary Louise Parker Join the Adaptation of Warren Ellis’ Red

5 November 2009 12:03 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

We haven't received much word on the adaptation of the Warren Ellis comic miniseries Red for some time now. Last we heard back in April, Morgan Freeman was joining the project, which already had Bruce Willis attached. Since then, Helen Mirren has signed on, and now we can add two more to the project---John C. Reilly, as a retired CIA agent paranoid about being assassinated,  and Mary Louise Parker, as the love interest to Willis's character. Robert Schwentke, he of Flightplan and The Time Traveler's Wife fame, is directing the film. Erich and Jon Hoeber (they of the recent crapfest Whiteout) wrote the screenplay. The official description of the comic follows: As a C.I.A. operative, Paul Moses’s unique talent for killing took him around the world, from one hotspot to another, carrying out the deadly orders of his superiors. 'G.I. Joe' Rises With A Bang, Denzel Catches A Train And More In The DVD Report For November 3

3 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

After weeks of rather lackluster releases ("Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" being a prominent exception), we finally have a Tuesday jam-packed with first-run titles and notable catalog additions. From the on-screen debut of an elite military team to John Cusack's ode to love, we're covering them all in this DVD Report for Tuesday, November 3.

For any child of the '80s, the thought of "G.I. Joe" receiving the theatrical treatment was an intriguing proposition, and one fraught with worry. And for die-hard fans of writer Larry Hama's epic "G.I. Joe" comic book run, it was especially scary. In stark contrast to the campy animated series, Hama infused his 155-issue run with deeply developed character arcs, ever-twisting conspiracies and, to his credit, pulled no punches when it came to violence and death. Which "G.I. Joe" would the film rely on for its story and tone? While producers insisted they'd »

Wings of Desire (Criterion Collection) This is a huge week for major title releases on Blu-ray as Criterion's release of Wim Wenders's Wings of Desire is just the first of three titles I reviewed and most likely blew my word count for the next two weeks trying to get all of my thoughts squared away.

As for this title specifically, it was my first time seeing it and as it played on and on I began to enjoy it more and more. However, if you read my lengthy review, you will »

Ron Livingston Attending Dinner For Schmucks

26 October 2009 7:31 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

The cast for Jay Roach's comedy Dinner with Schmucks is getting downright epic. The French remake already stars Steve Carell as the world's worst dinner guest and Paul Rudd as the guy who invites him, and over the past few weeks we've seen names like Zach Galifianakis, British actress Lucy Punch, Stephanie Szostak, Bruce Greenwood and another Brit, David Walliams, added to the crew. Now they've picked up a guy who's been tragically underused in movies lately. Ron Livingston, who popped up memorably but thanklessly in this summer's The Time Traveler's Wife, will join the dinner party in an unknown role, at least unknown by Variety. The story revolves around a group of friends who invite over, well, schmucks in order to make fun of them, and I can easily see Livingston as one of the regular guests ready to lay into whichever poor sap they invite over next. »

Bruce Willis To Go Red

24 October 2009 4:08 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Bruce Willis is set to play an ex-cia agent chased by a high-tech assassin in the comic book adaptation of writer Warren Ellis and artist Cully Hamner's Red. The movie will start shooting in January, according to Mania.

Robert Schwentke (The Time Traveler's Wife) is directing the project and told MTV in August that the script will stray from Ellis' 3-issue series.

The script that I've read is obviously different from the comic, because I don't think the comic gives you enough for a two-hour movie. It's very funny, which the comic book isn't. It's not as violent as the comic book. I like switching gears and this is a movie that allows me to do something lighthearted in tone and is also an action movie.

Morgan Freeman is also set to appear in the movie in the unexplained role of "Joe." Erich and Jon Hoeber (Whiteout) adapted the screenplay. »

Brody Lost Traveler's Role To Bana

1 October 2009 5:16 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Eric Bana was lucky to land the lead in The Time Traveler's Wife - because the original novel's author wanted Adrien Brody for the role.

Audrey Niffenegger penned the best-selling book the hit film, starring Bana and Rachel McAdams, was based on.

The author admits she didn't think the Australian actor would be right for the role - and had envisaged the part going to The Pianist star Brody.

And Niffenegger was so terrified about seeing her tale on the big screen, she has so far refused to watch it.

She says, "Once I signed away the rights, I just had to let go. Once you sign on the dotted line, you have no control... I decided it would probably be best if I just (didn't see it)." »
