Joe Quesada Talks ‘Captain America’ At Big Apple Comic Con

21 October 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Marvel’s chief fanboy, Joe Quesada, was at this year’s Big Apple Comic-Con to talk about what’s going on in the Marvel universe.  With the recent accusation of Marvel by Disney it’s hard to deny the company’s success. So, just how does Marvel continue to compete against DC it’s competitors?  According to Quesada, “The way we differentiate ourselves is by not sucking.”

Yes, you read that correctly. Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief claims “not sucking” is a sound business strategy. Okay, I can’t argue that point. From a business perspective not sucking, or at the very least sucking less then your competition, should be somewhere in the business plan and/or mission statement.

Unfortunately for Quesada, someone at Marvel hasn’t read said business plan.  If they had we, the fans, would not have been forced to endure Ghost Rider, either Fantastic Four film or the »

Interview: Boondock Saints II And Dexter's Julie Benz

8 October 2009 7:35 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Julie Benz has seen her fair share of onscreen combat. She plays Rita Bennett on the hit Showtime series Dexter and has starred in the action-packed thrillers Rambo and Punisher: War Zone. No actress can play the love interest or the damsel in distress forever and nobody deserves a chance to wield firearms more than Benz. In Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, Benz gets to play the ultimate female badass, FBI agent Eunice Bloom. Not only does Benz have the pressure of living up to Paul Smecker.s (Willem Dafoe) legacy, but she also has to hold her own on a set overflowing with testosterone. All Saints Day isn.t the only buzzworthy item on Benz.s resume; Dexter just kicked off its fourth season and the tension is higher than ever. Rita, Dexter and the kids may appear to be the perfect family, but Dexter.s dark passenger »

Thomas Jane Talks Perfect Punisher Movie

8 October 2009 1:12 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Thomas Jane (Hung) doesn’t think that The Punisher has gotten his due on the big screen. After portraying Frank Castle in the 2004 big screen adaptation of the Marvel character, Jane (something of a fan favorite) dropped out amidst much controversy of the 2008 (reboot? Sequel? Flop?), Punisher: War Zone.

While talking exclusively to MTV recently about his new movie, Dark Country, Thomas Jane addressed the subject of both Punisher films, what makes the character great, and what kind of film it would take for him to reprise the role of a character he seems to very much know and love almost as much.

Here are some exerts from what Jane had to say about The Punisher:

“My interest has always been based more in reality than in superhero fiction…The strengths of ‘The Punisher’ that I did lie in the reality that we were able to bring to the character, »

Exclusive: Thomas Jane Says Perfect 'Punisher' Movie Is More 'Death Wish,' Less 'Spider-Man'

7 October 2009 8:42 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

While comic book fans and critics alike didn't look too kindly on 2004's "The Punisher," Thomas Jane's portrayal of Marvel's gun-toting vigilante Frank Castle is widely regarded as one of the high points in the film. The actor has never been shy about his affinity for the character, and very publicly parted ways with the franchise prior to 2008's "Punisher: War Zone," citing creative differences over the character's direction in the films.

I recently spoke to Jane about his impressive directorial debut "Dark Country," a noir-horror thriller that hit shelves this week, and had to ask him what he thought about Frank Castle's big-screen prospects these days—and whether we'll ever see the Punisher movie he's been dying to make.

"My interest has always been based more in reality than in superhero fiction, and with the original 'Punisher' I very much pushed them to try to make a »

Dark Country Trailer

26 September 2009 7:32 AM, PDT | HorrorYearbook | See recent HorrorYearbook news »

I guess Thomas Jane refused to do the Punisher: War Zone because he wanted to star in crappy direct-to-dvd movies with Ron Perlman instead? Dark Country marks Jane's directorial debut, the "horror thriller" follows two honeymooners who rescue a mysterious car crash survivor in the Las Vegas desert. But their decision to save the man becomes increasingly regrettable when he turns on them, forcing the newlyweds to do the unthinkable. In a blur of paranormal chaos, the couple must take drastic measures to cover up their actions from the local police, ultimately leading each character to an inescapable fate. »

'Highlander' Remake: There Can Be Only One...Or Not

22 September 2009 11:39 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

I'm fairly convinced we don't need another Highlander movie. The first one, released in the mid-1980s, was pretty decent and had an interesting story. The sequels, however, couldn't have been much worse. Honestly, I thought they made Highlander II: The Quickening to grease the rails for bankruptcy declarations.

But Summit Entertainment is bringing back Connor McCloud - or at least the mythology of the immortals - for a remake of Highlander to be helmed by Fast & Furious director Justin Lin. Iron Man co-writers Matt Holloway and Art Marcum are taking aim at the script and that could be a good sign. Then again, they also co-wrote Punisher: War Zone. That movie's as bad as the Highlander sequels.

It is the job of studio bosses to sound excited about their projects, but...really? Summit's Patrick Wachsberger says of Highlander, "We are privileged to have this amazing opportunity to reinvent one of the great franchises. »

Fast & Furious Director Challenges Highlander

22 September 2009 10:23 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Justin Lin, director behind Fast & Furious, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, and Annapolis will be teaming with producer Neal H. Moritz to reboot the fantasy adventure film series Highlander for Summit Entertainment.

People forget after 20 years’ worth of lesser sequels and spinoffs that the original Highlander was a pretty high profile film starring Christopher Lambert (at the man’s peak) alongside Sean Connery. Original producer Peter Davis is returning to hand the torch over to the new filmmakers.

Highlander, like the original film, will focus on a race of immortals that wage war upon each other through time. It’s a concept that’s broad enough to be attacked from a fresh angle by a talented writer, and luckily we’ve got two pretty decent ones on our hands: Iron Man and Punisher: War Zone writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway.

Like the original film, the reboot (remake? »

There Can Only Be One Highlander but Director Justin Lin Wants a Remake

22 September 2009 2:23 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Highlander” is such a delightfully silly movie.  Christopher Lambert’s Swiss accent, original songs by Queen, Clancy Brown decapitating folks as he makes his way through the story, and Sean Connery all make for a movie that is cheesy 80s action but through a camp-fantasy filter.  You can’t really call it a “franchise” because that implies that anything after the first film was successful.  The biggest success following “Highlander” was that the title of the sequel had the sub-title, “The Quickening”.

And now “Fast & Furious” director Justin Lin wants to remake it.  Hit the jump to read the full press release and why this remake could work but not because of Justin Lin.

Sure, the “Fast/Furious” movies are dumb but next to “Highlander” they look like an in-depth documentary about the world of modified cars and the culture of street racing.  Screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway wrote »

Summit Rebooting Highlander with a Fast & Furious Director

22 September 2009 12:02 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Wow, this came out of nowhere, right? Summit Entertainment announced today that they're bringing the Fast & Furious team over to their boat to reboot and re-imagine Highlander . Neal H. Moritz is producing and Justin Lin, who also directed The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, is set to direct. The good news is that Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, who together wrote Iron Man and Punisher: War Zone, are attached to write the screenplay. Peter Davis, long time producer of Highlander films, will also produce. Summit's film will expand on the original Highlander's core mythology of immortals battling amongst us. Exciting! If you didn't get it, that was a joke. "We are privileged to have this amazing opportunity to reinvent one of the great franchises," said Patrick Wachsberger, co-chairman of Summit Entertainment. "Neal and Justin have proven more than once that they can deliver an entertaining and exciting blockbuster. »

Emmy Tweets, Kim Kardashian's Ripped Dress And Tyler Perry Envy In Today's Twitter-Wood

21 September 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The Emmy Awards prevailed over football yesterday in the Twitter-Wood feed. I'm just sorry that John Hodgman's posted pic with comic book writer and "Lost" writer staff alumnus Brian K. Vaughan was too dark to make Twitter Pic of the Day. Instead, Kim Kardashian moved up into first place for that honor with her behind-the-scenes look at what happens when you rip your dress at the Emmy's.

On down the list, Rainn Wilson, Diablo Cody and Steve Agee pondered how hitch a ride on Tyler Perry's successful Madea movies. To find out what Wilson wants to do and see when Peter Facinelli will be reporting back for duty on the "Eclipse" set, read their tweets for yourself. They're all below in the Twitter-Wood report for September 21, 2009.

The 'Defendor' Trailer Lands Online

3 September 2009 2:33 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I have been intrigued by Defendor since it went into development. It's not every day you see an indie "superhero" movie, and even rarer to see anyone using the comic craze to spin an original story. Watchmen may have deconstructed an awful lot of myth, but I feel like there's still things to say about the need for costumed vigilantes, especially as each generation discovers them all over again.

Defendor is one of the selections at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival, and the early buzz on it is pretty positive so far. Directed by Peter Stebbings, it stars Woody Harrelson, Elias Koteas, Kat Dennings, and Sandra Oh. It's the story of an unassuming man named Arthur Poppington, who lives in his own comic-book based world, and patrols the streets as the superhero Defendor. He's on the hunt for his arch-nemesis, Captain Industry, who he believes killed his mother and who deals in weapons and drugs. »
