2013, the extra special year marking the centenary of Hindi Cinema is almost coming at an end.
To celebrate, BollySpice briefly explores the theatrical roots of Bollywood, expanding on the contribution of William Shakespeare, the famous playwright who has continuously intrigued the Indian film industry since the beginning of the Hindi film industry.
We explore selected Bollywood “Romeo and Juliet” interpretations and how they disturbingly reflect South Asian cultural issues related to “love”.

Manish Tiwary’s made a sparkling debut with Dil, Dosti, Etc, with his second feature Issaq, he is tackling the Bard with an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. The film stars Prateik and newcomer Amyra Dastur, along with Ravi Kishan, Vineet Singh, Neena Gupta, Makrand Deshpande and others for this ambitious film that the key themes of Shakespeare’s play but to a rustic and volatile setting in Banaras. The album brings Sachin and Jigar, Krsna, and Sachiin Gupta on board to rustle up a few gems to fit with the gritty tone of the film. The album is a real treat in that it focuses more on the unique voices of its singers, with the music adding a more complementary tone to the great songs.

Easily one of the most awaited films of the year, Raanjhanaa captured our interests from the unconventional pairing of Sonam Kapoor and Dhanush, and Abhay Deol and the earthy tones from A.R.Rahman’s songs. Anand L Rai’s fourth feature after the sleeper hit, Tanu Weds Manu, looks to be an interesting and swooning love story especially through its gorgeous music. A.R.Rahman was so moved by the script of the film that he immediately agreed to sign up and do the background score for this love story, which can only mean good things for its prospects as an awaited summer movie. Shor directed by Neeraj Ghaywan won the Satyajit Ray Foundation’s Short Film Award 2012 at the London Indian Film Festival. This was announced at the closing night ceremony of the festival on July 3.
Shor is about a couple from Banaras consumed by their pursuit to survive in the seedy ghettos of Mumbai city. The film has earlier won the Best Short Film award at Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles and South Asian International Film Festival.
The other shortlisted films for the award were Ayesha by Farzana Tipurita (UK), Khaleel Khan Ke Faakhtey by Rizwan Siddiqui (India), Maya by Naina Panemanglor (UK), Unravel by Meghna Gupta (UK) and Raju by Max Zahle (India-Germany).

After the industry lost Sourabh Usha Narang, Pankaj Advani and Maneesh Acharya, there has been another tragedy. A jeep was also shown in the frame, which Sohil was driving. Though production people gave him a driver he chose to drive it himself. While passing through a bridge he saw two people coming in his direction.In order to save them he took a sharp turn and the jeep fell off the bridge.
