VR specialists Survios has announced Alien: Rogue Incursion, a first-person, single-player “frightfully immersive” videogame.
The Alien franchise celebrates its 45th anniversary on the 25th May, and there’s already a xenomorph-flavoured sequel – August’s Alien: Romulus – planned to help celebrate.
We’ve also learned there’s a new videogame based on the series in the works. Called Alien: Rogue Incursion, it’s billed as the first virtual reality outing for the Alien – which means, of course, you’ll need one of those fancy VR helmets to play it.
In development at Survios – which previously made the likes of The Walking Dead Onslaught and Puzzle Bobble VR, a game we didn’t realise existed until now – Alien: Rogue Incursion is billed as a single-player action-horror created in Unreal Engine.
Its announcement was accompanied by a teaser video which shows us… nothing. Absolutely nothing.

The Cannes Film Festival has announced it is launching a new competition section dedicated to immersive cinema.
In a statement the fest said that in 2017, Alejandro González Iñárritu “made history at the 70th edition of the Festival de Cannes with his groundbreaking virtual reality piece, ‘Carne y Arena (Virtually Present, Physically Invisible)’ marking the first immersive work ever presented as an official selection at a major film festival.”
Iñárritu went on to receive a special Academy Award for the project “and continues to be a prominent figure at the Festival de Cannes,” the statement noted, serving as president of the fest’s Jury in 2019.
Now, seven years since its first immersive selection “and in line with the Marché du Film’s commitment to exploring new technologies and art forms through its innovative-focused programs” the fest is launching the new Immersive Competition for its upcoming 77th edition.

Eli Roth is continuing to push the horror genre into new terrain, except this time, it’s through virtual reality.
The “Thanksgiving” director produces Meta, Crypt TV, and ShinAwiL series “The Faceless Lady” which will debut exclusively on Meta Horizon Worlds. Billed as the first known live-action VR series, the six-episode “The Faceless Lady” will premiere in stereoscopic (3D) and have weekly installments that transport viewers (players?) into a new world.
The series is set in Ireland and has a storyline inspired by real 17th century Irish folklore, particularly the myths surrounding Lady Margaret Hodnett who haunts Cork’s Belvelly Castle. Lady Margaret Hodnett is fabled to watch the castle’s visitors through mirrors and reflective surfaces. “The Faceless Lady” turns the myth on its head, quite literally, with three couples trying to survive playing Lady Margaret’s games during a weekend stay at the castle.

Great American Media is revamping its Great American Living cable channel with a new rebrand. Originally acquired by Gac Media in 2021, the linear channel houses shows such as Going Rv and is set to take a new name, becoming known as Great American Faith & Living. This strategic decision comes in the wake of Great American Media’s recent merger with Pure Flix, according to Deadline, a company owned by Sony. It marks the organization’s ongoing efforts to broaden its presence in the linear space focused on faith-based content. Notably, Great American Media, under the leadership of President and CEO Bill Abbott, also possesses the Great American Family in its portfolio. “Given the enormously positive reaction from subscribers to Great American Pure Flix and the ongoing growth of Great American Family, now is the perfect time to sharpen our focus on our second linear channel,” Abbott said. “Great American Faith...

Earlier this week when the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority released its annual Homeless Count, this year’s 10% rise countywide represented the second-biggest rise in the report’s five year history. But hidden in that countywide jump was an even bigger surprise.
From 2022 to 2023, the so-called “Service Planning Area 5” — which is comprised of Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Culver City, Ladera, Malibu, Mar Vista, Marina del Rey, Pacific Palisades, Palms, Playa del Rey, Santa Monica, Venice, West LA, Westchester and Westwood — saw a 45% increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness. The region’s count went from 4,604 to 6,669, a rise of 2,065 in just 12 months.
Ironically, Spa 5 includes L.A.’s priciest zip codes with a median income 54% higher than that of L.A. County as a whole. Residents of the area have been complaining for years about the rise in people experiencing homelessness.

A Canadian documentary maker whose film helped police crack one of the art world’s biggest fraud cases has been forced to surrender his source material to the Ontario Provincial Police as part of a production order.
Jamie Kastner is the director of “There Are No Fakes,” a 2019 documentary that uncovered an art fraud ring that passed off fake paintings as originals by the celebrated Indigenous artist Norval Morrisseau, known for his vibrant paintings of the natural world and First Nations mythology. The eye-opening film, which premiered at Hot Docs in Toronto, revealed there were up to 10 times more Morrisseau forgeries on the market as there were real works, and that the artist’s own nephew may have been complicit in helping to produce the fakes.

Fringe Realities’ upcoming VR horror game Project: Nightlight has unfortunately been hit with a snag in its release. Originally set to come out on March 3, the developer has announced that due to technical difficulties with the build and uploading it to Steam, Project: Nightlight is being delayed to later in March, though no exact date has been announced.
The team took to Twitter to express their apologies for the delayed release of Project: Nightlight. “Unfortunately we have some bad news, we’ve had to push back our release from this Friday. We’ve had some issues with our build and our upload process, so we need to delay a little bit. We’re hoping it won’t be too long and that our next submission goes smoothly. Thank you for your patience, and hopefully you’ll all be able to hop into Project: Nightlight very soon.”

The potential of immersive content is a key theme this week at CES, and demonstrating his interest in the subject, director M. Night Shyamalan took the stage at Canon’s press conference Wednesday to introduce several unique experiences that he created in collaboration with the tech developer. They aim to allow CES attendees to step into his upcoming Universal thriller, Knock at the Cabin, when the CES exhibition floor opens Thursday.
These experiences are enabled by featured Canon technology, including its Free Viewpoint video system, MReal mixed reality headset, Kokomo VR software and remote collaboration tool Amlos.
Using an array of Canon Cinema Eos-based 4K cameras and lenses, the Free Viewpoint system captures volumetric camera data to create point cloud-based 3D models that can be used to reproduce various viewpoints. This was used to create a way for CES attendees to view an action scene from Knock at the Cabin from four different character perspectives.

JoJo Levesque stunned her fans as she posed in sheer lingerie. Pic credit: ©ImageCollect.com/XavierCollin/ImagePressAgency
Early-2000s songstress JoJo had the internet reeling over the weekend and into the beginning of the workweek after sharing a skin-baring shot with her Instagram fans.
The 31-year-old performer, whose real name is Joanna Noëlle Levesque, got in touch with her sultry side as she shared what seemed to be a throwback snap.
Wearing some sheer, lime-green lingerie while sitting on a porch and sipping what appeared to be coffee, the Too Little Too Late singer sizzled in the two-pic series.
“not these pics from a couple years ago screaming at me to chill on the desserts (and the Sauvignon blanc and the bread baskets) presently,” she captioned the shots before adding a tag for Robin Williams‘ daughter, Zelda, who seemingly was the person behind the lens taking the photos.

Before signing on for the just-concluded third season of “The Girlfriend Experience,” writer-director Anja Marquardt was working on multiple projects set in what she calls “future-facing worlds.” Immersed in technology-driven stories to the point where she was “living and breathing” data, cybernetics, and artificial intelligence, the filmmaker behind “She’s Lost Control” is still quick to call herself a neophyte.
“To be perfectly honest, I don’t really have a background in tech at all, but I’ve always been really curious,” Marquardt said in an interview with IndieWire. “I’m a really research-driven filmmaker at heart. I really enjoy the process of unveiling for myself a world that has nothing to do with my own, [which] involves lots of research and seeking inspiration in other works of art and reading lots of stuff, like scientific papers, but also interviewing advisors.”

“The Masked Singer” semifinal on May 19 includes just one woman — the Black Swan — among the four remaining celebrity contestants. We think this powerhouse performer is the best singer still in the hunt to win the season 5 Golden Mask. She faces off against three fellows who are disguised as the Chameleon, Piglet and Yeti.
The Black Swan secured her place in the semis by winning over the four judges with her cover of the Ed Sheeran hit “Thinking Out Loud” on the May 12 episode. That was just the latest in a line of triumphs dating back to her first appearance on the show in Week 2 when she wowed the crowd with her cover of “Barracuda” by Heart.

As season 5 of “The Masked Singer” heads into the quarter-finals on May 12, the Black Swan is the last woman standing. She earned her slot in the Top 5 with her cover of the Stevie Wonder chart-topper “Do I Do” on the Week 8 episode of this reality competition series on May 5. Season 5 of “The Masked Singer” is woefully short on women contestants. Only three of them numbered among the 14 plus acts competing for the Golden Mask. Two of them have been sent packing — Phoenix (Caitlyn Jenner) and Seashell (Tamera Mowry). That leaves just the Black Swan still in contention. She sings again on the May 6 episode, “The Spicy 6 – The Competition Heats Up!”
We’ve gone back and watched her previous performances: “Barracuda” by Heart in Week 2; “In My Blood” by Shawn Mendes in Week 4; “How Will I Know” by Whitney Houston in Week 5; and “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon in Week 7. Producers Eric Kopeloff and Philip Schulz-Deyle have optioned Hermann Hesse’s “Demian” and plan to adapt the novel into a feature film. Nick Kreiss (“Afraid”) has penned a screenplay with cinematographer Andre Lascaris (“About Alex”) and under the supervision of the Hesse estate.
The book was a bestseller in the U.S. and its story of spiritual enlightenment and self-discovery resonated first with readers in the post-World War I period and then later with members of the American counterculture of the 1960s, who embraced the novel yet again. It found favor with the likes of Timothy Leary and Colin Wilson, who became enthusiastic boosters of the Hesse canon. Kopeloff thinks the time is ripe for a new generation to rediscover “Demian.”
“We’re living in a digital age, where a lot of our lives are dictated by social media,” he says. “There’s an externalization of identity. This story is a fresh contrast.

The Black Swan is the last woman standing on season 5 of “The Masked Singer.” She landed her spot in the Super 6 with her powerful performance of “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon on the April 21 episode. That quarter-final ended with the elimination of the other remaining female contestant, the Seashell, who turned out to be Tamera Mowry.

No surprise that the Black Swan numbers among the Super 8 competing on “The Masked Singer” on April 21. She has impressed us with her vocal talents since her first appearance on St. Patrick’s Day when she wowed with her rendition of “Barracuda” by Heart. She returned two weeks later and nailed her cover of “In My Blood” by Shawn Mendes. On April 7, the Black Swan secured a place in the season 5 quarterfinal with a toe-tapping version of “How Will I Know” by Whitney Houston.
The judges have figured out that the Black Swan is a pop princess who started her career as a child. But they are wrong with their guesses that this is Demi Lovato or Ashley Simpson. Keep reading if you want to know as we have all “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including the name of the Black Swan.

Fans of the “The Masked Singer” contestants in Group B got a real treat on April 7 as these celebrities competed for the second episode in a row. These remaining contenders for the Golden Mask returned disguised as Black Swan, Chameleon, Crab and Piglet. We first saw all of these but Crab when Group B competed on St. Patrick’s Day. The crusty crustacean made his first appearance as the Wild Card on March 31, when Grandpa Monster was bounced and revealed by guest host Niecy Nash to be YouTube star Logan Paul.

The fourth episode of “The Masked Singer” on March 31 saw the return of four famous folks from Group B who had shone in their first appearance two weeks ago. Five celebrities had competed on episode 2 of season 5 on St. Patrick’s Day. Four — who were disguised as the Black Swan, Chameleon, Grandpa Monster and Piglet — won over the audience with their singing. The fifth, the Phoenix, failed to impress both the audience and the judges and was revealed by guest host Niecy Nash to be Caitlyn Jenner.

Not long into the first act of Men in Black: International, a thought popped into my mind that I just couldn’t shake. It’s not a particularly controversial musing, but it’s certainly something I never expected to believe, so bear with me: I miss the foregone days of a Barry Sonnenfeld comedy.
Sure, the Golden Raspberry Award-winning director gave us some of the most abysmal films of the past twenty years, but before there was Wild Wild West and Rv, there were the critically acclaimed Get Shorty, both Christina Ricci-starring Adams Family films and most significantly, 1997’s Men in Black. Odds are if you’re reading this review, you’re familiar with the Will Smith-starring action adventure comedy, which only works because it’s too smart to play it cool. It was August 11, 2014. The theater was full with an advance screening of The Giver starring Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep. The red carpet event was live-streamed prior to the showing as stars from the film flooded in and entered the New York City party while we, in Knoxville, Tenn., gazed at the screen.
I checked my phone for the time and came across a message on the screen.
“Actor Robin Williams found dead at his home. He was 63.”
A friend put it best when he said that hearing the news of Williams’s passing surprised him with grief.
It did the same for me.
Now, to this point, Robin Williams was just another face (or voice) on the screen to me. An actor who had given life to Genie in Aladdin, the main character of Flubber, and was Mrs. Doubtfire. Nothing of note, but fun most of the time.

We were all shocked by the tragic news of Robin Williams' unexpected death last week. As tribute to all the times he made us laugh and cry, we’ve decided to share our favorite memories from his storied career.
Any time a person who has had so much impact on so many people’s lives passes away, it is understandably hard to comprehend. Robin Williams was one of these people. He used his talents to become much more than just a comedian. He was an entertainer. As tribute to all of the great accomplishments in his career, we’ve decided to share our favorite memories. Feel free to join us by adding your own.

I was pretty young when Robin Williams first rose to stardom as Mork from Ork, but I was a dedicated fan. I bought a pair of official Mork suspenders and wore them all the time.

"Suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problems." - Robin Williams, "World's Greatest Dad" This is a very emotional "Ask Drew." This is, I would suspect, the closest you're ever going to see to me losing it on camera completely. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised when there was a Robin Williams question, since it's still so fresh and so raw for so many people, but I couldn't have known just how hard it would be to talk about him. I mean, I have stared at the blinking cursor on my blank document page for almost two days now, grappling with one question: how in the hell do you even remotely begin to sum up someone as huge as Robin Williams? We could start from the personal angle. I could tell you about the occasional e-mails I got from him when I was at Ain't It Cool, or the...

Yesterday we ran a story on some of Robin Williams’ most under appreciated performances. But as the remembrances keep rolling in and as new, gruesome details about his suicide become apparent, it became clear that Williams didn’t just have depth in his filmography; he was an actor and performer who displayed worlds of expression and moved so many in remarkable and distinct ways.
Rather than ask our staff to rattle off more of their favorites, we asked them to recall Williams’ personality and the legacy his work left on their lives. We’re looking at each side of his many faces as a comedian, a movie star, a voice actor and a true character, offering our final goodbye to a man who gave us so much.

The untimely death of Robin Williams has certainly been felt, and will continue to reverberate in our minds and hearts, and on our screens, for years to come. Williams was at work on a number of projects before he died, four of which are films that are already in the can and will be seen this year and next.
The first project is Merry Friggin’ Christmas, an indie comedy with a November 7th release date, which also stars Joel McHale and Wendy McLendon-Covey. Williams plays McHale’s father, who joins his son on a road trip to retrieve some forgotten gifts. This sounds a little bit too close to some of Williams’s later film roles (like Rv), which left a little something to be desired, but just the presence of the comedian on screen will be enough to get me to give it a chance.

Monday’s episode of Conan ended on an unusually somber note. The cause: During the course of taping that evening’s show, Conan O’Brien, Andy Richter, and their guest Will Arnett got word of Robin Williams’ unexpected death.
“We tape these shows a few hours early, and by the time you see this now on TV, I’m sure that you’ll know. I’m sorry to anybody in our studio audience that I’m breaking this news—this is absolutely shocking and horrifying, and so upsetting on every level,” a visibly shaken O’Brien explained at the end of the show.

I had to stop and think about it. When was the first time I encountered Robin Williams? I'm pretty sure it was reruns of "Mork & Mindy" at a young age, if not the boisterous Oscar-nominated performance he gave in Barry Levinson's "Good Morning, Vietnam." By then he had already dazzled countless audiences in "The World According to Garp." Whatever it was, like so many, it was the start of, as his widow noted in a release, "countless moments of joy and laughter" he would deliver for the next three decades of my life. And now, he's gone. It soon became erratic late night appearances with David Letterman and the like, as the movies flowed in. Terry Gilliam's "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen," for instance, or another, much more timid Oscar-nominated performance in Peter Weir's "Dead Poets Society." He continued to spotlight range and versatility in Penny Marshall...

The Angriest Man in Brooklyn

USA, 2014
When one thinks of comedy, one name always comes to mind. He is a man of supreme funny-man power, impeccable timing, and an almost unlimited supply of improvised genius: Robin Williams. Over the course of four decades, Williams has delighted audiences both young and old, from his wacky comedies and stand-up routines to his occasional voice-over work in animation. Though known mostly for his comedy, he is also a very talented dramatic actor. He is a man who continually surprises. Unfortunately, however, with his latest cinematic effort, The Angriest Man in Brooklyn, it seems he may have run out of steam and this is unfortunate because the subject matter of this film is full of true potential.

Sure, the Oscars, Globes and pretty much every other awards show is over and done with, but MTV still has plenty of golden popcorn to pass around.
Earlier today (March 6) the cable network unveiled the nominees for the 2014 MTV Movie Awards, slated to kick off on April 13th at 9:00 pm and hosted by Conan O’Brien.
While many of the categories mirror those of the Academy Awards, the Movie of the Year hopefuls include “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” in addition to the usual “12 Years a Slave,” “American Hustle,” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
And of course, everyone will be watching to see who wins the Best Kiss trophy- nominees include Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson, James Franco, Ashley Benson and Vanessa Hudgens, Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller and Emma Roberts, Jennifer Aniston and Will Poulter.

The 2014 MTV Movie Awards were announced today and once again it's a grab bag of nominees, but this year is even more curious than most as the one film thought to be the most populist film of the lot, Gravity, comes away with only one nomination and that being for Sandra Bullock for Best Actress. Then you have the Movie of the Year category, which pits The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire against American Hustle, The Wolf of Wall Street and 12 Years a Slave. I don't know how the nominees are decided at the MTV Movie Awards, but I know the winners are supposedly determined by MTV viewers, which means, looking at this list, the Hunger Games crowd is likely to make a huge mark.... or, it could be the Leonardo DiCaprio crowd that became ever-so-vocal after he, predictably, lost Best Actor at the Oscars.

What would you do if you accidentally abandoned your spouse at a highway rest stop? For Jeff Daniels, the answer is beg for forgiveness -- and then sheepishly recount the incident decades later on national television.
Daniels told his tale on "The Tonight Show" Monday night after some prodding from host Jay Leno, who said another actor related the story to him. “The whole thing is irredeemably dreadful” cries the Guardian. “It’s a shamelessly broad, deliberately lowest-common-denominator sitcom” it continues, barely unable to contain their vitriolic anger. “It should be thrown on a pile of dung and set ablaze with a thousand gypsy women dancing and singing folk songs of yore around it” it doesn’t add. But it should. Then again that’s probably why I don’t write for the Guardian. And what is the target of this focused fury and bile?
Ben Elton’s new sitcom; The Wright Way.
I do think it’s pretty funny that we live in a society where unbridled anger can be unleashed so masterfully at a mass market sitcom. But it is anger from a place of regret at what this once dynamic comic has become. This man who was once the staple of 80’s political satire is now reduced to BBC...
