They both are. This was the original film that was made by Paul Schraeder. But when it was completed, the studio hated it. They then fired Paul Schraeder, had a new script written and hired Renny Harlin to direct the new script, with about 90% of the footage re-shot, a few characters re-cast, only the basic plot of Father Merrin and the demon Pazuzu being in Africa are all that remained between this film and The Beginning. Also only a handful of characters were killed in this film, whereas in The Beginning only a handful survive.
