Pierre Morel, the French director who slammed around his actors with the firework action films like District B13 and Taken has just signed on to do the impossible: make another film out of the epic sci-fi novel “Dune.”
For those who aren’t aware of the book, “Herbert’s novel — about a galactic struggle to control the supply of a valuable spice found only on the desert planet Arrakis — remains the biggest-selling sci-fi novel, and it’s still enormously popular.”
Paramount Pictures has just signed Morel to direct the film, with duties on tinkering the script also. Morel will be working on an adaptation first developed by former tentative director Peter Berg and Josh Zeutmer (Zeutmer is working on a fourth Jason Bourne movie also). Variety reports that another writer to “Dune” will be hired soon.
Originally, a July 1, 2011 date was set for release when Peter Berg was on board

A New director is reported to have signed on for the planned remake of Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel Dune, following the departure of Peter Berg in October.
Berg became involved with the project in March 2008. His exit came as a surprise because a month beforehand he had confirmed he was still on board, amid speculation that Twilight star Robert Pattinson was in line for the lead role of Paul Atreides.
Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent, Doomsday) and District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp were rumoured to be the contenders to step into the hotseat, although the latter has made clear his aversion to big-budget spectacles.
Now, according to Entertainment Weekly, Paramount has hired Taken director Pierre Morel to get things moving again on the new Dune film.
The French filmmaker apparently wants to make a very faithful adaptation of Herbert's sprawling epic. Paramount production chief Adam Goodman has

"Taken" director Pierre Morel is set to take over the directing reigns of the "Dune" remake at Paramount Pictures reports Entertainment Weekly.
Peter Berg ("Hancock") was originally attached to direct but dropped off the project in October.
A new scribe will now be hired to incorporate Morel's vision of the project into the current script by Josh Zetumer ("Quantum Of Solace") which is expected to be a very faithful adaptation of Frank Herbert's 1965 sci-fi novel classic.
Kevin Misher and Richard Rubinstein are producing.

The arrival of "Taken" director Pierre Morel on the planet Arrakis is the latest development in the twisty history of a big screen remake of "Dune." Based on the 1965 sci-fi novel, David Lynch's version—awesomely weird, or just plain weird, depending on your sensibilities—arrived in 1984. Little over two decades later, rumors that a second cinematic take was in the works.
In the fall of 2007, Ain't It Cool News suggested that "Friday Night Lights" director Peter Berg was Paramount's top choice to helm the remake. That December, MTV News exclusively confirmed the news.
"If it weren't for the writer's strike, we'd be in it right now," Berg told us.
Describing the size and scope of the film, the director said, "Big, big, big."
Exciting stuff, no doubt. But then we didn't hear anything for a while. Berg launched his very first blockbuster with "Hancock" and fielded an avalanche of other offers,

Frank Herbert's sci-fi classic, last seen in cinemas in David Lynch's 1984 lurid adaptation, looks set for another screen outing under Pierre Morel
It proved something of a grand folly for David Lynch, whose 1984 adaptation was a commercial and critical flop, while Salvador Dalí and Orson Welles were set to star in a 10-hour version almost a decade earlier. Now Dune, the bestselling science-fiction novel of all time, looks set to be revamped for the 21st century with French director Pierre Morel at the reins.
According to Variety, Morel, best known for directing the Liam Neeson-starring revenge thriller Taken, will also work to hone a screenplay by Peter Berg and Josh Zetumer into a finished product. Berg, of Hancock fame, was previously set to direct, but has decided to work on the forthcoming adaptation of board game Battleship instead.
Morel is said to be a long-time fan of Frank Herbert's 1969 novel,

'Taken' Director Pierre Morel Now Tackling 'Dune'

Dune will now be directed by Pierre Morel, a huge shot in the arm for the French filmmaker, whose Taken was a big hit last year and whose From Paris With Love opens around the same time this year.
The project was originally being steered by Peter Berg of Hancock and The Kingdom, but he bailed to direct Battleship. At the time, that didn't sound too bad, but with what we've heard about Battleship (aliens? Wtf?), I'm not too sure anymore. Of course, as part of the deal, Berg will also get to make Lone Survivor, a drama about the Afghan war, so that probably influenced his decision.

Taken was one of my top ten of last year and director Pierre Morel seems to be moving up the Hollywood ladder after his tale of daddy-gone-deadly made a ton of money at the box office.Peter Berg, who directed Hancock, The Kingdom and The Rundown, was going to direct a new adaptation of Dune, one of the most popular novels in science fiction ever written.Berg dropped out to direct Battleship. So where did that leave Dune? Looks like it didn't take long for Paramount to snatch up a director. Pierre Morel will move from the streets of Europe to the desert sands, with his take on Dune. Will this version of Dune will be a bit more action packed than the previous film that starred Sting? Is this guy the right director for the job? What do you guys think?Source: Hollywood Insider

Pierre Morel Takes Over Directing Dune Remake

The remake of a 1984 sci-fi classic has found itself a new director after Peter Berg left the project due to scheduling conflicts. Pajiba reported last October that Berg left the project in order to direct Battleship for Universal.
Entertainment Weekly is now reporting that Pierre Morel (Taken/From Paris With Love) has come aboard to direct the Dune remake. Paramount for awhile wanted Neill Blomkamp to direct the film but that seemed to not work out.
Though Blomkamp directing would have been awesome, Morel is a wonderful pick. He will definitely bring a lot of awesome qualities to the film. Also as Luc Besson’s protege, he has similar range and just look what Besson did with science fiction films like the Fifth Element, which is definitely a great action sci-fi film. I’d like to see him use some of the parkour stunts in the film, which would definitely be unique.

Dune Gets ‘Taken’ Off Peter Berg’s Hands By New Director

Back in August of last year it was reported that Hancock director Peter Berg had left the long gestating Dune remake/new adaptation. This came as a bit of a surprise since Berg had been working pretty hard on the project for quite a while, with reassurance coming from the director himself that the project was still a “go,” just a month before he left.
He has Battleships being attacked by aliens to attend to for the time being, anyway…
At the time of Berg’s departure from the project, two names were being thrown around to replace him in the director’s chair: Neill Blomkamp (District 9) and Neil Marshall (The Descent, Doomsday). Of the two, it seemed like Marshall was maybe the more likely, since Blomkamp has stated before he isn’t particularly interested in doing “massive budget films, or creating huge spectacles,” and I think you’ll

Taken's Pierre Morel Hired to Direct the New Dune Adaptation

Oh hell yes! EW has just announced that Paramount has hired French director Pierre Morel, of Taken and the upcoming From Paris with Love, to direct their new adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi classic Dune. Originally, The Kingdom and Hancock director Peter Berg was supposed to direct, but he left the project last year (to direct Universal's Battleship movie instead) and Paramount was left without a director. Now they've brought on Morel and are "currently looking for a new writer to incorporate Morel's vision of the project into the original draft by Quantum of Solace scribe Josh Zetumer." Whoa, now I've got high hopes for this!
While I do think this means that this new Dune will be infused with a lot more action than we've seen in any adaptation prior, EW does also say that "Morel plans to make a very faithful adaptation of the 1965 book by Frank Herbert.
