Best Films Of The Decade (aka The Naughties) From Alex & Terry
List # 1
By Alex Simon
When Terry and I initially discussed writing these lists, I had a tough time thinking back on 20 films over the past decade which I was really taken with, thinking that movies have sunk so low over the past ten years, that even choosing a dozen would be a short-order job. Thirty minutes into it, my list had nearly 60 titles! After much cutting, pasting, and re-cutting and pasting, here are my top 20 films (in no particular order) of the first decade of the 21st century, dubbed by many as “the naughties.” --A.S.
1.No Country for Old Men (Coen Brothers, 2007) An elegiac blend of stark beauty and full-throttle despair from two of our finest filmmakers, set in the contemporary American West. Every frame is damn near flawless, and would have been an even more perfect vehicle for the late Sam Peckinpah.

The Editor's Desk: The Top 10 Robert Downey Jr. Performances

2008 was clearly the year of Robert Downey Jr. And why not? The man has gone through a lot of personal adversity (granted, most of which was his own doing), but managed to pick himself up to re-establish himself and his career. The year started for him with two smash hits, Iron Man and Tropic Thunder, and then went on to give a solid performance in "The Soloist".
Now, 2010 seems to be set for another huge year for Downey. On Christmas day, just over a week away, the new film "Sherlock Holmes" will open. Then to kick off the Summer movie season in May, Downey returns as Tony Starks in "Iron Man 2".
So as we enter this season of Downey, I thought I'd take a moment to look back at his films up to this point, and offer my personal list of his best performances. (Remember, this is a list of his best performances,

New Trailer for The Crazies Starring Timothy Olyphant

Yahoo! Movies has premiered a new trailer for Breck Eisner’s remake of George Romero’s 1973 horror film, The Crazies. The film stars Timothy Olyphant (Deadwood), Radha Mitchell (Surrogates), Joe Anderson (Across the Universe), and Danielle Panabaker (Friday the 13th, 2009) as the unfortunate residents of a town where residents are inexplicably turning, to quote Robert Downey Jr. in Zodiac, “a tad bit fuckered in the head.” I was lucky enough to get to go to the set this past March where I saw some cool stuff, especially in terms of the special effects make-up, which is important when you’re making a gruesome horror movie. You can click here to read my full set report where I go in depth about the make-up and how time stops when in you’re in a high school classroom no matter how old you are.

David Fincher's true crime masterpiece about a serial killer that terrorized Northern California throughout the late 60's and early 70's may very well be one of the best police procedural dramas of all time. Film Junk's Best of the Decade #14: Zodiac.
Starring an incredible ensemble cast of Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards, Jake Gyllenhaal and Chloe Sevigny, Fincher puts forth a film of immaculate detail and an endless investigation that became an obsession of many of San Francisco's media and law enforcement members.
At a running time of almost three hours, Zodiac follows the steps of the reporters and beat cops through the investigative process. They try to figure out the randomness of the murders and why the killer sent confessions and cryptic clues to the newspapers.
As the killer collects more victims, James Vanderbilt's screenplay becomes that much more riveting. Fincher films some death

Blu-Ray Review: Excellent Release For ‘Fight Club: 10th Anniversary Edition’

Chicago – What took so long? Seriously, why are studios waiting so long to release some essential titles on Blu-Ray? Every time someone asks me why I think that Blu-Ray hasn’t taken off as quickly as some insiders expected, I have the same answer. “Because your favorite movie isn’t on Blu-Ray.” At least one of those “favorite movies” can be checked off the list with the release of “Fight Club” in a glorious tenth anniversary edition from Fox.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
What more is there to write about “Fight Club”? It’s almost more interesting to think about the ten years that have passed and the influence that the film has had on the ’00s and what happened to the key players since. Helena Bonham Carter was an intriguing supporting actress then and her status hasn’t really changed. Brad Pitt hadn’t even met Angelina Jolie (as far as

'Brothers' Wrenching, But the Performances Are Top Notch

Sibling rivalry is a common theme in films, but Brothers takes that universal subject and places it in a new context. There's more at play — and at stake — in Jim Sheridan's awards hopeful than just family interaction. Grief, guilt, and identity lie at the torn heart of this sometimes disturbing but always moving film.
At the beginning of Brothers, the family of Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire, Spider-Man 3) is reluctant to see the Marine return to Afghanistan for another tour of duty. His wife, Grace (Natalie Portman, The Other Boleyn Girl), jokingly asks to come with him, and his daughters (Bailee Madison and Taylor Geare) plead with him to stay. He has an uneasy relationship with his brother, Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal, Zodiac), who has just been released from prison in time for Sam to leave. Trouble-making Tommy has always stood in his brother's shadow, and it's never been

Five Rules For Taking War Machine Solo After 'Iron Man 2'

There's much ado about War Machine going on right now, and it's not hard to understand why — as you can see from the recently revealed "Iron Man 2" poster, the guy is just flat-out cool.
While "Iron Man" fans are already well aware of James "Rhodey" Rhodes, the character is set to explode even further thanks to his armored up role in "Iron Man 2," this time played by Don Cheadle. Beyond the upcoming superhero film, Cheadle is reportedly signed on for a role in "The Avengers," meaning we haven't seen the last of War Machine by a long shot.
But if the character proves popular enough, maybe Rhodey could wind up with a film franchise of his own. If that happens, here are some suggestions for how to make that "War Machine" spinoff work.
1. A History Of Violence: The good news about a "War Machine" movie is that

Richard Kelly's $1m question

He made one of the coolest debuts ever, Donnie Darko – then it all went wrong. Now Richard Kelly's back, with a film about a shocking dilemma
After making Donnie Darko, his phenomenally self-assured and very cheap debut, Richard Kelly went on to direct 2006's Southland Tales, a surreal epic set in a post-apocalyptic America. When a rough cut was screened at Cannes, it wasn't just booed – it was denounced.
The memory still troubles him. "We did Southland for about $17m," he says. "A lot to me, but not much to some. We felt like we were making a bold satire of the Bush administration, and of celebrity and pop culture. Think Pynchon and Philip K Dick. We squeezed every penny out of the budget and worked like dogs. I'm so grateful for the experience, but it's the kind of thing you hope to get out of your system while you're still young.

"Is Tyler my bad dream? Or am I Tyler's?"
David Fincher's (Seven, Zodiac) cinematic adaptation of Fight Club (based on Chuck Palahniuk's novel) burst onto the scene in 1999 to polarizing critical reaction. For every claim that the director had crafted a scathing indictment of post Baby Boomer materialism, a rebuttal arose deriding the movie as a celebration of mindless violence wrapped in infantile philosophizing. This could be written off as a case of snobbish critics just not "getting it" or the low brow masses wanting their visceral but vapid entertainment. For me, the film's beauty does not simply lie somewhere in the middle as I adore the brutal, dream-like vision but not for the common rationale about its prominently touted message.
Sure there is a lesson to be learned that the things we own do not own us, we should not define our existence gathering more "versatile solutions for modern living,

About ten years ago, three promising young actors were working to secure a place amongst the Hollywood A-list. Natalie Portman had finished her first major acting role, as Mathilda in Luc Bessons Leon. She would go on to make her major breakthrough in the Star Wars prequels. Tobey Maguire had small roles in respected films like The Cider House Rules and Wonder Boys, then also got his major break in a high budget franchise, winning the role of Spiderman. Jake Gyllenhaal came to public attention through his role in sleeper Indie hit Donnie Darko, then hit the big time through a combination of big budget popcorn in The Day After Tomorrow, and critically acclaimed drama in Brokeback Mountain. Next week in the Us, these three actors, firmly A-List, come together for Jim Sheridan’s brothers.
Brothers is a remake of Susanne Bier’s Danish film Brodre. Tobey Maguire plays Captain Sam Cahill,

Why Richard Kelly's The Box could be the best film of the year

Year: 2009
Directors: Richard Kelly
Writers: Richard Kelly

Review by: agentorange
Rating: 9 out of 10
Richard Kelly channels no less than the ghost of Stanley Kubrick to turn Richard Matheson's blip of a Twilight Zone idea into one of the most astounding pieces of cerebral science fiction cinema I have ever seen. Yes, The Box is that good. It dares to scale the same intellectual heights as 2001: A Space Odyssey and it revels in the potent, restrained formalism of The Shining without ever leaving its two main characters or plot too far behind. In fact, Kelly is so self assured in executing this delicious layer-cake of a movie that The Box is now a front runner for my choice of best film of the year (yep, move over Moon) and I absolutely can't wait to see it again so I can dig even deeper into its box of mysteries.
