While the obvious answer would seem to be they refer to being vampires as "a disease".

However, the disease they are likely referring to is Porphyric Haemophillia; a fictional disease in folklore referred to as the "Vampire Disease" which is contracted by being bitten by a vampire, causing the sufferer to become a vampire too. While Porphyria (a severe allergy to sunlight among other symptoms) and Haemophilia (uncontrallable bleeding not necessarily from actual wounds) are in fact real diseases, the combination (and then some) of Porphyric Haemophilia does not exist in reality (at least in the sense of vampirism).
