Interview: Pop Skull's Peter Katz and E.L. Katz

12 December 2009 6:25 PM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

"Pop Skull is very unique, because it progresses from an intimate mumblecore movie into more of an intense psychological ghost story. Another selling point is that it was produced for less than it usually takes to shoot a low budget music video." - For a website that prides itself on championing indie films and filmmakers, we here at ioncinema.com really missed the boat with Pop Skull, an award-winning - jury awards at the Boston Underground amd Indianapolis International film festivals - ultra-low budget experimental thriller from director Adam Wingard (Home Sick). Since its release on DVD this past July, Pop Skull has been steadily - and deservedly - gaining a reputation as a visually powerful psychological horror film. This isn't your typical gore- and effects-laden ninety minutes that passes for horror these days (though Wingard is adept at that too...see Home Sick for proof). Pop Skull »

DVD Weekly Roundup – Mon 5th October 2009

2 October 2009 10:34 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Red Cliff

John Woo hasn’t exactly lit up the screen with his Hollywood films has he? Face/Off is enjoyable I guess but the less said about Windtalkers, Paycheck and even Mission Impossible 2 the better really. It’s a shame because the man is capable of directing action sequences better than anybody else on the planet.

Red Cliff sees John Woo look to Chinese history for inspiration. It’s a sweeping, magnificent epic that looked amazing on the big screen.

The Han dynasty is coming to an end in third century China so as a last ditch attempt for survival the Emperor raises an army that stretches close to a million to attack the two neighbouring kingdoms.

Red Cliff boasts beautiful cinematography and action set pieces. It’s great to see a Director back at the top of his game.

Looks incredible on Blu-Ray.

Leave your brain at the door for this one. »

A proper trailer has not been released yet. Night Of The Demons to fall a little later; Piranha 3-D too

6 August 2009 2:33 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Fango just got the scoop that Night Of The Demons, the remake of Kevin S. Tenney’s 1988 cult gore flick directed by Autopsy’s Adam Gierasch from his and Jace Anderson’s script, has had its release date bumped by distributor Seven Arts Pictures. It had been originally set to open October 9, which would have put it up against Columbia’s undead epic Zombieland.

Now, Demons is set to debut in February 2010; an exact date has yet to be determined. The new saga of a group of youths who decide to throw a Halloween party in a haunted house and wind up raising a bunch of unruly evil spirits toplines T2’s Edward Furlong, 13 Ghosts’ Shannon Elizabeth, Freddy Vs. Jason’s Monica Keena, ubiquitous horror starlet Tiffany Shepis and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning’s Diora Baird, with a cameo by original co-star Linnea Quigley and makeup FX by Drac Studios. »

DVD Review: 'After Dark Horrorfest III: 8 Films to Die For'

23 April 2009 8:58 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Lionsgate and After Dark Films’ recently released their third collection of “8 Films to Die For” and this year proved to be the most uninspiring octet to date. With fewer risks taken than the last two years and less extreme failures or successes, “After Dark Horrorfest III” is terrifyingly dull.

Overall DVD Rating: 2.0/5.0 What makes this year’s collection rather forgettable is the lack of extremes on either side of the rating spectrum. The first two years produced some truly excellent genre gems including “Borderland,” “The Hamiltons,” and “The Abandoned.” At the same time, movies like “Dead Lake,” “Undead,” and “Nightmare Man” should be buried in a deep hole and never see the light of day again.

I have to admit that I liked the variety in quality of the last two years more than this year, when nearly every film registered as forgettable more than good or bad. There was one notable standout, »
