Let's face it, Kier-La Janisse is a force to be reckoned with.
Over the past 15 years, she has created the CineMuerte Horror Film Festival (Vancouver, BC, 1999–2005); founded the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies as well as the Blue Sunshine Psychotronic Film Center, Montreal's coolest micro-cinema (2010–2012); and programmed for the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema (Austin, TX, 2003–2007). That's in addition to working for the Fantasia International Film Festival (Montreal, QC), being the subject of the documentary Celluloid Horror (Ashley Fester, 2004), writing A Violent Professional: The Films of Luciano Rossi (published by Fab Press) and contributing articles for Filmmaker magazine, Fangoria and Rue Morgue, among others. And this extensive list is only the tip of the iceberg that is this woman's achievements.
I first met Kier-La in 2009 when she generously agreed to contribute to my Bloody Breasts documentary webseries by letting me interview her amid the craziness that is the Fantasia Film Festival – she...

Pop Montreal unveiled it’s 2011 line-up at a Press Conference this morning, showcasing a diverse set of events that span all of the arts. Pop Montreal may be best known as Montreal’s premiere music festival, but it similarly includes events for those with an itch for fashion, passion for cinema and love of all things art. Film fans in particular have a lot to look forward to as this year’s Film Pop is being curated by Kier-La Janisse. Kier-La Janisse published author, film reviewer and founder of Montreal’s own Psychotronic Film Center, Blue Sunshine. She is also former head programmer of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Austin Texas and subject of the documentary Celluloid Horror (2005).
This year, the line-up for Film Pop truly embodies the spirit of Pop Montreal. The subject of both documentary and narrative film are tied to music. In the case of the many documentaries,...

After the Academy’s attempt at honoring genre during the live show, we saw a real tribute to horror by someone who is truly one of our own. Bob Murawski thanked Sam Raimi for giving him his “first cutting job” in Army of Darkness. His Best Editing award for Hurt Locker was shared by his partner Chris Innis, whom he met on the Raimi produced TV show “American Gothic.”
I gotta say, never since Peter Jackson’s (who was nominated this year for District 9) thank you to the crew of Meet the Feebles has there been such an excellent genre shout out.
On top of working with Raimi for over a decade, Murawski also runs Grindhouse Releasing, which distributes and restores cult and horror films with a focus on extreme Italian cinema. Pieces, The Beyond, Cannibal Holocaust, and I Drink Your Blood are just a few names you’ll find in Grindhouse Releasing's catalogue.
