If you’re looking for a comprehensive overview of the not so distant future in American indie film, a reliable sampling is usually found in the bi-annual Sffs / Krf Filmmaking Grants finalist (and future winners) lists. Grants will be awarded next month, but this finalists’ list overviews a look into the 2016-17 pool of talent and feature films. Among the trio of items that are in various stages of production and we’re keeping tabs on, we have Ian Olds (docu helmer of Fixer: The Taking of Ajmal Naqshbandi) who moved into fiction feature filmmaking with The Fixer. Produced by Caroline von Kuhn (Camden Int. Film Fest Managing Director and docu field expert), this is said to include supporting players in the shape of Melissa Leo and James Franco. And speaking of Franco…, Travis Mathews from Interior. Leather Bar. fame has Oscillate Wildly next in line. Beasts of the Southern Wild...

Emily Head has said that she didn't expect to return for The Inbetweeners 2.
The actress played Simon's (Joe Thomas) on-off girlfriend Carli in the E4 sitcom and its first feature film in 2011. However, the character did not appear in the sequel released this year.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Emily claimed that she would have loved to have worked with her former colleagues again, but was aware that the likelihood of Carli's return was slim.
She said: "I still haven't seen it - I feel awful! I couldn't make it to the premiere, and then auditions and rehearsals have got in the way. I really do want to see it - I'm a big fan of the writers and the boys.
"I would have liked to have returned in that I would have liked to have worked with everyone again, but I think Carli was so awful at the end...

Today is the Fourth of July, America's great big birthday, and what better to do on such a festive occasion than to barbecue some meat (or delicious vegetables), gather with friends and listen to some carefully chosen tunes while staring at the blinding light of impressive pyrotechnic shows overhead.
Well, you're in luck! We've put together a list of the 20 songs you should be listening to on Independence Day. Scroll down for the very indie playlist and let us know what songs you would add in the comments.
1. "Independence Day" - Elliott Smith
Let's start this holiday off with indie royalty.
2. "The Star Spangled Banner" - Sufjan Stevens
A little alternative patriotism.
3. "Parades Go By" - The Magnetic Fields
Because Fourth of July parades are almost as good as St. Patrick's Day.
4. "American Music" - Violent Femmes
An ode to American music on this uber-American day.
5. "4th of July" -...

Mother Monster serenades president for his 65th; Usher and U2's Bono also perform.

Even with a galaxy of big stars on hand to honor former President Bill Clinton on his 65th birthday, it was, of course, Lady Gaga who made the big headlines Saturday night at the four-hour Clinton charity fundraiser, "A Decade of Difference."
Emerging on the stage from an all-white tree house, Gaga sang a sedate, unplugged version of "Born This Way" on keyboards, while wearing a giant cloth hat and flesh-colored cape over a similarly colored top and leggings. The backing track soon pumped up and a group of dancers came out as Gaga made her way down to the main stage and sang the line, "Don't be a drag, just be a queen," while the former president and his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton,...

Jamie Scott of Graffiti6
Odds are good you might not know much about the UK pop duo Graffiti6 just yet. But if you've been watching MTV's Teen Wolf (or Grey's Anatomy or Covert Affairs) then you've at least heard their music. And if you haven't seen them, then you'll be happy to know that Jamie Scott, who does vocals for the group, isn't just easy on the eyes, but is very gay-friendly. Which is exactly why we have an interview coming up with him in the next couple of weeks.
But until then here is Graffiti6's recent in-studio performance of "Staring at the Sun" at Kcrw in Los Angeles.

TV on the Radio have brought up one tragic news for their fans. The "Staring at the Sun" rockers announced through their website that they have just lost one of their band mates. On Wednesday, April 20, their 34-year-old bassist, Gerard Smith, lost his battle with lung cancer.
In a statement they posted on their website, the rock band wrote, "We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and band mate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer. Gerard passed away the morning of April 20th, 2011. We will miss him terribly." Along with the statement, they also announced cancellation on a number of upcoming gigs.
Gerard joined the band full time since 2005. He contributed to the band's acclaimed third album "Return to Cookie Mountain" and fourth effort "Dear Science". Back in March, it was revealed through the band's website that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer.

Some "Glee" cast members made a big splash this week on the Internet and with Doug Benson, thanks to a GQ photo shoot. Other pics of note in the feed showed off meetings between Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Cameron, Seth Green and Jar Jar Binks, and Ludacris with a motorcycle.
Elsewhere, Rose McGowan chastised Omar Doom for his Blu-ray watching choices, while Damon Lindelof assessed Jean-Claude Van Damme's heart attack denial and Rich Sommer backed one of his "Mad Men" co-stars to play Superman. Their tweets all appear after the jump, along with a backstage view of Broken Social Scene.

The end of "Mad Men" Season 4 threw a few viewers for a loop Sunday night. Damon Lindelof attempted to contribute to that confusion, which sounds like it was shared by Elizabeth Banks.
In theater reaction tweets from the weekend, Paris Hilton and Gillian Jacobs both showed some love to "Jackass 3D," even if their affection came accompanied by shock. You can read what they thought down below where it's retweeted along with director Toby Wilkins' outlook on directing MTV's new "Teen Wolf" series, Ludacris' motivation for getting up early and Jon Favreau's favorite part of filmmaking.

Twitter-Wood was on pins and needles waiting for the Chilean miners to get rescued yesterday (well, Steve Martin and Simon Pegg tried to lighten the mood). Today, the overall mood is significantly cheerier, thanks to a successful extraction operation. Kal Penn and Patton Oswalt discussed their reactions, while some other faces in our feed checked out "Red" and Seth Green hung out with some sailors.
Green's shot with them was good enough to make Twitter Pic of the Day. You can find it after the jump along with Ice-t's multiplayer review of "Medal of Honor" and Juliette Lewis' view of the Arcade Fire concert in Los Angeles.

Someone needs to perform an Inception on MTV, it's been too long since they were the destination for music videos. The channel has been lost in a limbo, a reality show hell with no musical kick, no Edith Piaf to pull them back out and remind them what it was all about in the first place. Now, Universal Music Group has pulled their videos from them in favor of Vevo.
The news came just after newcomer Vevo scored big with the live webcast of an Arcade Fire show from Madison Square Garden, the one directed by Terry Gilliam late last week. The whole thing is a blow to MTV's online content especially since Umg seems to represent most of the mega-acts that are omnipresent on the site -- Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Eminem, Rihanna, Kanye, and the rest.
Wait, losing those artists is a bad thing, right? Not so fast.

Fangoria.com is launching Short Cuts, a brand-new blog exploring the world of horrific short films. The informative blog will be written by Fangoria scribe Logan DeSisto, who has been screening and following the exploding industry of mini-length fright flicks for years.
“For a long time I had been kicking around this idea for a blog that showcased not only short films that were making the festival rounds, but also ones that had made the transition to features,” DeSisto says. “I finally wrote up a proposal and sent it to Fango, who immediately approved it and I got to work. It is really hard for up-and-coming moviemakers to get noticed, and I am hoping this blog will help readers become familiar with directors they might not otherwise have heard of.”
