Director Jonás Cuarón reimagines the terrifying mythical beast as a cute and furry little creature in Netflix’s Chupa. The two-minute trailer for the family-friendly adventure confirms this incredibly adorable baby chupacabra looks nothing like a goat-killing, nightmare-inducing monster.
“I was a small kid when the legend started. When the idea came of turning [the myth] on its head and using it to tell a family adventure, I was immediately excited,” said Cuarón in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “I’ve always been a huge fan of E.T. and believe that stories like that are so powerful because they play on the idea of kids being misunderstood by adults. Chupa might be a monster but he’s the only one that truly understands what Alex is going through. The bond between a boy and a creature is so pure, like with a pet, it transcends language.”

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race the same way you’ve been communicating with your coworkers for the past year: via Slack. This week, after Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations, we chat about the windfall Glenn Close has gotten in the topsy-turvy Best Supporting Actress category after many thought “Hillbilly Elegy” was Doa in November.
Christopher Rosen: All right, Joyce. We’re back at it again after a busy week of pontificating about the meaning of the Golden Globe Awards and SAG Awards nominations with a focus on a former presumed frontrunner who has quickly risen from the ashes to find herself primed to win a long-awaited Oscar. I’m talking, of course, about Mamaw, the inimitable Glenn Close. Following the SAG Awards’ snub of Amanda Seyfried in the Best Supporting Actress category,...

The Good Doctor‘s winter premiere culminated in a brutal wake-up call for Dr. Audrey Lim.
The ABC medical drama, which exists in a post-covid world, explored the emotional fallout from the pandemic through the eyes of St. Bonaventure’s chief of surgery, who was determined to bury her feelings and go about her life, business as usual. But it was clear as she lashed out at Jordan (who let her personal beliefs interfere with an abortion procedure) and Shaun (who refused to teach the interns after Asher’s fatal mistake) that she was not Ok.

Early January is rarely a time for exciting new releases, although this year is slightly different, as the Oscar window has shifted and streaming services offer up their awards contenders. This week, “Herself” and “Pieces of a Woman” make their way from limited theatrical runs to Amazon and Netflix, respectively. And over at Film Movement, Latvian foreign language submission “Blizzard of Souls” kicks off a weekly series of movies competing for the international feature Oscar.
Otherwise, the release calendar reflects the usual January doldrums, made all the more tepid by the lack of schlock horror movies and YA romantic weepies. It won’t surprise many to learn that theatrical releases are slim, although those willing to risk it can watch “CSI” veteran Gary Dourdan play an American war hero tasked with rescuing his pregnant wife from terrorists. By all reports, you don’t need to see this one to guess how it goes.

(This article contains some spoilers for the season 4 premiere of “The Crown” on Netflix.)
Four seasons in, we know “The Crown” doesn’t shy away from dramatic tragedies and threats, especially as they relate to the royal family — that is, in fact, kind of the whole thing with this show. And this season opened with a bang — literally. In the season premiere, Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas Mountbatten is killed by a bomb that was planted in his fishing boat by the Provisional Irish Republican Army — better known generally as the Ira — in 1979.
The episode shows us an otherwise serene summer day in August, a day where Lord Mountbatten (Charles Dance) has decided to take a boat out for fishing with several family members including his daughter, his son-in-law, and his grandsons. He’s unaware that a Provisional Irish Republican Army member named Thomas McMahon has put a radio-controlled bomb on the boat,...

Exclusive: The Disney live action team is in early development on a reboot of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day with Matt Lopez writing. 21 Laps and Jim Henson Company, who produced the first film, will return as producers. The film will be developed for Disney+.
The original film is based on the Judith Viorst children’s book and is considered one of the more popular children books of all time. Disney’s first film starred Steve Carell as Alexander’s dad and followed the young boy as he went through a truly tough day when it starts with him realizing that the gum he fell asleep chewing is now hopelessly tangled in his hair, and things get worse from there, to the point he threatens to chuck it all and move to Australia.

The quotes in IFC’s trailer for MLK/FBI will tell you what’s expected: important, timely, infuriating. All of which may be true and is intended to push tickets, but also likely a disservice to Sam Pollard’s documentary. So I think from our NYFF review, where we praised its immense assembly of the struggle between Martin Luther King Jr. and J. Edgar Hoover, who used his considerable power to discredit the Civil Rights leader.
IFC will release the feature theatrically and digitally on January 15, ahead of which there’s a trailer. Assaultive in its density, this shows the extent to which Pollard has gone. Per our review, “Pollard approaches the material as a meticulous journalist unveiling a history covered in secrecy, but doesn’t sensationalize the story. History is damning enough of an argument to question Hoover and his intentions for tracking King.”

The Western used to be the biggest and most popular genre in Hollywood, reigning supreme for decades as almost every A-list star and respected filmmaker journeyed to the Old West. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be as much interest in producing them as there used to be, but we have seen plenty of recent gems like Django Unchained, 3:10 to Yuma, the True Grit remake and Open Range.
Instead of taking the old-fashioned route, a lot of modern Westerns have also sought to put their own twist on the tropes of the genre to decidedly mixed results, whether it be action blockbuster The Lone Ranger, comic book adaptation Jonah Hex, the animated Rango, the blood-soaked Red Hill, the star-studded Magnificent Seven update or South Korean Spaghetti Western The Good, the Bad, the Weird. All of them brought something interesting to the table, but not all were successful.

“The Good Lord Bird” premiered on Showtime on October 4 and is poised to be a serious contender at this winter’s awards, including the Golden Globes, as well as next year’s Emmys. The limited series showcases Ethan Hawke both in front of and behind the camera. He helped adapt James McBride‘s 2013 novel of the same name and portrays John Brown, a “wild-eyed” abolitionist leading a misfit brigade of soldiers that fail to initiate a slave revolt, but ultimately instigate the American Civil War.
As of this writing the series, which Hawkes also produced, has a MetaCritic score of 83 based on 13 reviews, all of them positive. On Rotten Tomatoes, the seven-episode series is off to an impressive start with a 100% freshness rating.

Lucinda Williams tore through a live rendition of “You Can’t Rule Me” on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Wednesday night.
Seated in a studio at an appropriate social distance, Williams and her band showcased the Good Souls Better Angels track’s blues-rock grit, head-bobbing to the beat and letting each guitar solo rip through the room. Williams herself brought her best snarl to the number: “You wanna go and tell me what’s good for me/You wanna tell me what I’m payin’ for/Well, the game is fixed,...

If you’re feeling weary of pandemic-related shows, Love in the Time of Corona executive producer Joanna Johnson completely understands.
The four-part limited series — airing this Saturday, Aug. 22, and Sunday, Aug. 23 at 8/7c on Freeform — tells four interconnected stories about life during the early months of quarantine. But given that viewers are still very much living in a coronavirus-plagued world and being inundated with content about Covid-19, “that was one of the things that we really talked about in the beginning: Do people really want to watch this?” Johnson tells TVLine. “That’s why our take on the show was more about relationships and connections,...

Greetings, you foul-smelling oafs! “Smart” Mark D. Mark here to fill in for Nathan Favel, who is probably at home using his mother’s ashes as kitty-litter, because he’s such a wimp. Nathan will receive the credit while I, “Smart” Mark D. Mark, will do all the work, because Donald J. Trump is Making America Great Again. I tire of watching Impact Wrestling squander their potential on the likes of WWE rejects and unpromoted prize fights that lead to no buckos in the banko. Emergence: Night 1 is upon us and it will bring us a main event featuring The North, who are seeking to regain the Impact World Tag Titles from The Motor City Machine Guns. America versus Canada…beat that Canuck ass boys! With an X-Division Title match to start us off, let’s embark on the great venture of your life, you pathetic squelches.

The Coterie won’t be under quarantine when Good Trouble returns for Season 3 next year. Although the global coronavirus outbreak continues to plague the world, the pandemic will not be written into the Freeform drama — initially, that is.
“The stories that we were already shooting and that we’d already broken were happening pre-covid. So for the first half of the season, we’re going to stay in that pre-covid world — and for a number of reasons,” executive producer Joanna Johnson told TVLine while promoting her upcoming Freeform limited series Love In the Time of Corona.

Neil Gaiman has iterated his desire to write a Doctor Who episode for current Tardis incumbent Jodie Whittaker. The writer previously penned two episodes for the show during Matt Smith’s tenure, 2011’s critically acclaimed “The Doctor’s Wife” and 2013’s slightly less critically acclaimed “Nightmare in Silver.” Seven years since his last contribution, Gaiman has now explained to Digital Spy why he’s been unable to return since then, saying:
“Everything to do with anything about Doctor Who is always about time. I love The Doctor. I think Jodie Whittaker is a fabulous Doctor. On the one hand, I’d love to write for her, but on the one hand, I really, really, really wanted to write something for Peter Capaldi, and never got there because I was writing and making Good Omens through the Peter Capaldi years. So, you never know. With luck, I’ll write something for Jodie,...

It’s one of the single most recognizable musical motifs in film history: a keening wail over a heavy bass drum beat, followed by low, staccato horn blasts. Ay-ya-yahhh. Wah-wah-wah. Then a reverb-heavy guitar kicks in, along with a chorus of background voices and a martial beat, and you immediately feel like you’re in the most feral outpost in the wild, wild West, staring down sweaty, stubbly men as the instrumental builds to an massive crescendo. This is the theme of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. It...

‘A Simple Favour’ helmer Paul Feig has signed up to direct Netflix’s young adult fantasy fairy-tale ‘The School for Good and Evil’.
The film is based on the novel by Soman Chainani and follows best friends Sophie and Agatha who are students at the titular School for Good and Evil, where ordinary boys and girls are trained to be fairy-tale heroes and villains.
With her princess ambitions, Sophie knows she’ll be picked for the School for Good and join the ranks of past students like Cinderella and Snow White. Agatha, with her grim aesthetic and wicked cat, seems a natural fit for the villains in the School for Evil.
When the girls find their fortunes reversed, with Sophie dropped into the School for Evil and Agatha into the School for Good, their friendship will be put to the test.
David Magee and Laura Solon have penned the script.

Film Art Media’s Sue Maslin and Charlotte Seymour bought the rights to Bruny, which is set in a near-future in a place where the inhabitants are inoculated against change and a bridge to connect Bruny Island to mainland Tasmania is blown up by terrorists.
Astrid Coleman, a Un troubleshooter, is called home to Tasmania to manage the fallout and finds herself caught between political foes, foreign interests and island families.
Good Thing Productions’ Nick Batzias, Virginia Whitwell and Charlotte Wheaton optioned the book by Haddow, a former Australian Financial Review journalist, which details her account of buying her first home and interviews with others who found diverse ways to enter the property market, including ‘rentvesting,’ flipping, Airbnb, tiny homes and buying regionally.

Lucinda Williams isn’t into appointment songwriting. She stays up late, wakes up even later, and writes when the spirit moves her. If you’re a fan of older NBC comedies, the Covid-19 pandemic has had a bit of a silver lining. First, there was the new “special” from the cast of “Parks & Rec,” filmed with the cast reuniting via Zoom. Then, there’s the upcoming “virtual table read” of an episode of “Community,” featuring the entire cast (including Donald Glover) returning. And now, John Krasinski has done what has seemed impossible, reuniting the cast of “The Office” to recreate one of the most iconic scenes in the series’ history for his Some Good News YouTube channel.

We have some thrilling finales to look forward to this week, but not a lot of new arrivals.
The only new shows on our radar are good ones, though, especially for Anglophiles — the Great premieres on Hulu and A Confession storms Britbox.
Find out what else we're recommending this week below!
Sunday, May 10
8/7c Batwoman (The CW)
Batwoman's premiere season is almost at its (slightly early) end. This week is the penultimate episode and, as such, be prepared for Gotham to get a little (more) crazy.
After last week's devastating betrayal, Kate's super paranoid and sensing back-stabbing from every direction. Meanwhile, members of the city's spy and intelligence community start disappearing, sending Jacob and Sophie into Battle Mode.
When Luke and Julia get nabbed, the newest team member, Mary, is teamed up with a questionable ally as Batwoman's back-up. Will she be up for the mission?

A grey cloud loomed overhead on Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Season 1 Episode 11, as the family prepared for Mitch's fast-approaching demise.
The episode was a bit slow and laid back, but it seemed fitting for the somber and sad mood of the unfolding events.
Zoey's budding relationship with Simon was put on hold, and rightfully so. It was a family affair, and there was no room for romance.
In life, loss is inevitable. However, we all seem to handle it differently.
Some choose to jump ship early in an attempt to avoid an even greater crash, while others put things off for the future so they can enjoy themselves in the current moment.
Up until this point, Mitch's progress had plateaued, but the rapid decline began, and the family had to start making moves.
Wow mom. I didn't know you were such a pioneer.
