Peeking Behind the Doors of Seismic Change: Televisionary Talks to "Endgame" Star Chiwetel Ejiofor

20 October 2009 11:50 AM, PDT | Televisionary | See recent Televisionary news »

Golden Globe nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor is perhaps best known for his work in such diverse films as American Gangster, Dirty Pretty Things, Serenity, Love Actually, Redbelt, and Kinky Boots. The British actor has made a career of playing deeply complex individuals, from cross-dresser Lola in Kinky Boots to Dirty Pretty Things' cab driver and former doctor Okwe. In PBS' gripping apartheid thriller Endgame, which airs Stateside this Sunday as part of the new season of Masterpiece Contemporary, Ejiofor, recently appointed an OBE by Queen Elizabeth, plays South African political figure Thabo Mbeki, a key player in secret negotiations between the African National Congress and the South African government that were brokered by Consolidated Goldfields. Remarkably these talks resulted in an end to apartheid in South Africa and Endgame, written by Paula Milne and directed by Pete Travis, dramatize the secret talks, which occurred at Mells Park, an estate in England. »

When Did We Start Immediately Remaking U.K. Movies?

15 October 2009 10:15 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Remakes are inevitable. I know, I know. But at least when the remakes are of foreign-language films, I can rant whilst understanding that they're spoon feeding the anti-subtitle audience. Lots of people don't like making their eyes watch a scene and read text scrolling along the bottom at the same time. I get it. But since when did English films, as in films from the U.K., get the same treatment? Variety reports that Columbia Pictures has grabbed the rights to the British miniseries Red Riding, and Steve Zaillian is in negotiations to shrink the story into one film while Ridley Scott is spotlit to direct.

Miniseries doesn't quite cover it. We're talking about David Peace's quartet of books going into a trilogy of films. Movies directed by Julian Jarrold (Kinky Boots), James Marsh (Man on Wire), and Anand Tucker (Shopgirl). And by the way -- they only premiered this year, »

Recession Forces Hugh Jackman to Become ‘Avon Man’

16 July 2009 10:21 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Damn this recession! When will the turn around come? So many have been laid off, so many are wandering aimlessly down the streets in tattered clothes, so many are eating beans out of cans. And now, the economic downturn's latest victim is none other than super famous actor and mutton-chop enthusiast Hugh Jackman who has taken a job selling Avon products. Or, he's being cast as a character that has to sell Avon products. The details are still shaky in my head. According to Variety, the X-man will join Fox's Avon Man, the story of a car salesman who loses his job and sells out his masculinity a bit to start selling Avon products. The script is from Kevin Bisch, the same guy who wrote Hitch, and it looks like it might be a comedy following in the vein of those brilliant British down-on-their-luck-moxy-group-invents-creative-way-of-making-money films like The Fully Monty and Kinky Boots. At long last, a Martin Luther King jr. biopic is in the (Dream)Works

19 May 2009 4:57 AM, PDT | The Cinema Post | See recent The Cinema Post news »

It has been years in the works, but there will finally be a major Hollywood production of the life and times of the late great Civil Rights pioneer and activist, Martin Luther King jr. According to Variety, DreamWorks have finally secured the rights to make a film about King’s life. Steven Spielberg will produce the film, no details regarding the cast or a director/writer have been announced yet.

In press comments, Spielberg said “We are all honored that the King Estate is giving us the opportunity to tell the story of these defining, historic events. It is our hope that the creative power of film and the impact of Dr. King’s life can combine to present a story of undeniable power that we can all be proud of.” A King biopic has been a personal priority for Spielberg for many years, and he has been working with »

Sam Mendes Gets Lost in Jane Austen

13 February 2009 8:03 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Just like Will Shakespeare, Jane Austen has gotten a lot of play by modern media. Just last year, she got a taste of time travel with the UK-based miniseries Lost in Austen. But I guess the story was too much for the small screen because Variety reports that the adaptation is making its way to the big screen -- with Sam Mendes attached to produce.

This latest spin on ol' Jane's works has added time traveling portals to the mix, allowing a modern girl named Amanda to change places with Pride and Prejudice's Elizabeth Bennet. Basically, Amanda wants to be left in peace to read her Austen when her drunken boyfriend messes things up, and out of nowhere Bennet appears in her bathroom (watch the clip here). From there, the girls trade places and the whole Pride and Prejudice world gets some new, more modern, life.
