Although I have marked this commentary as containing spoilers, there is, at least what the story concerns, not much to spoil. The story is so banal, so monotone and so repetitive that many people may come to decide in the first minutes to turn the movie off. However, if there were not the acting! Frankly, I had not idea who James Welington is, and I did not know that the famous Hungarian actress Tarjan Györgyi, formerly Madach Theater Budapest, is in this movie. But also frankly, I have never seen so realistic acting like that of Wellington and Tarjan. During the whole movie, I was convinced that the two must really be drunk. Another feature that may disturb many people is that this movie was obviously filmed by using a video camera, imitating the "reporting" style from the perspective of the young girl who later wrote the book to this movie. But this goes together with the many low-angle shots in the movie from about the height of the girl and thus makes sense.
What makes this movie so worthwhile is its absolutely compromise-less realism. This includes topic-breaks, subject-changes, discontinuity, dis-coherence, other forms of dis-rupture. The almost surreal climax is then reached when the drunk couple hits one another, lying on the soil, she on top of him, while on the next-by veranda an old man sings songs in Hindi(?). It is exactly the triviality and the incoherence which makes this movie so realistic, because it is "isomorphic" which was is actually going on in the life of the two drunks, which their drunk friends, the toking girls who are going to be prepared for the same senseless and useless life as the father and his girlfriend live. So, where is the Nothing that gave the movie its title? - The adverb close points that it is just in front of you, but the quantitative interpretation means that it is so small that is almost fits everywhere. So just look around where it is. The end is a little reverence to Brecht. I frankly do not think that anybody could have filmed the story in a more appropriate way. The two main actors get each a symbolic "Oscar" from me.
