Parsis in Paris: Little Zizou in the Land of Zidane

9 November 2009 8:01 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

It's not often one finds photographs of Parsis on display in the heart of Paris. But that is just what strollers along the Seine can find this fall. The photographs, by Sooni Taraporevala, are part of the Quai Branly museum's biannual exhibition Photoquai. It is free and open to the public 24/7 through November 22. Best known as a talented screen writer who has worked closely with film maker Mira Nair on such movies as Salaam Bombay! and The Namesake, Taraporevala was in Paris last week for the exhibition and for a double screening of her newly released feature film Little Zizou. Like her photographs, Little Zizou is a loving portrait of the Parsi community to which Ms. Taraporevala belongs. But whereas the photographs are elegant, faintly nostalgic black-and-white compositions that speak as much about what... »

Review: ‘Amelia’

23 October 2009 12:15 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

The new biopic Amelia stars two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank as the aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart. Often remembered more for her mysterious disappearance than her aerial accomplishments, the new movie tries to steer focus back to her highly publicized, if short lived career as a professional female pilot. Only eight years after the Nineteenth Amendment granted women the right to vote, Earhart burst onto the public radar in 1928 by being the first women to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, becoming an instant celebrity. Just nine years later, on July 2, 1937 while attempting to circumnavigate the globe, her plane disappeared over the Pacific Ocean, giving birth to several theories and myths regarding her death.

Directed by Mira Nair (Salaam Bombay!, Monsoon Wedding, The Namesake) Amelia is a visual feast, as expected by a director that seems to delight in filming rich colors and textures—the only thing Vanity Fair had going for »

Hilary Swank Talks Amelia

23 October 2009 11:09 AM, PDT | movies.about.com | See recent movies.about.com news »

Two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank did an incredible amount of research in order to, as accurately as possible, portray legendary aviatrix Amelia Earhart in Amelia, directed by Mira Nair (The Namesake). Swank even went as far as to take flying lessons. "You cannot play Amelia Earhart and not learn how to fly," said Swank at the La press day for the Fox Searchlight film. "It was just as exhilarating and freeing and exciting as she writes about. I get it." Read On...

Movies This Week: Amelia, Astro Boy, Assistants and Good Hair

23 October 2009 10:04 AM, PDT | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

Surprise!  We're busy into Austin Film Festival, but there are actually a number ofmovies being released this week that aren't playing at Aff.

Amelia -- They had me at "Mira Nair" (Monsoon Wedding, The Namesake), and lost me in one of the least cohesive films I've seen in a long time.  If you're addicted to period pics, you'll still be disappointed.  Read my full review for more.

Astro Boy -- The latest adaptation of the manga-fied Pinocchio-esque story of a robot boy.  It's not just a kid's movie, it's actually a little bit dark, and a little bit smart.  And the animation is so sharp it almost felt like 3D.  The three kids I saw it with give it three thumbs up.

Blue -- Hindi language, filmed in Thailand, with a cameo by Kylie Minogue.  How could I not list it? That's not an endorsement, but it seems so ... noteworthy. »

Plot: The life of pioneering female pilot Amelia Earhart (Hilary Swank), from her first flight across the Atlantic, to her mysterious disappearance over the Pacific years later. Review: Mira Nair.s Amelia would seem to be the type of film that has everything going for it. The pedigree is superb, with it being directed by Nair, who.s Monsoon Wedding is considered a classic by some, and her last film, The Namesake, while somewhat overlooked when it came out, was excellent. The cast is... »

Review: Amelia

22 October 2009 11:30 AM, PDT | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

It's Oscar contender season, when the studios trot out the films they hope will capture the attention of the bearers of golden statuettes, and the box office revenue those little gold men bring.  One has to wonder just what Fox Searchlight was thinking when they chose to release Amelia.

It seems like a perfect match: Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding, The Namesake) directing a cast of heavyweights, including Hilary Swank, Richard Gere, Ewan McGregor, Christopher Eccleston. Stuart Dryburgh had an Oscar nod for Best Cinematography for The Piano amongst his list of nominations and wins. Both editors, Allyson C. Johnson and Lee Percy, are seasoned professionals, and Johnson has worked on several Nair projects. The writers, Ron Bass (Rain Man, The Joy Luck Club) and Anna Hamilton Phelan (Girl, Interrupted, Mask) each have an Oscar nod. Two books about Earhart are used, including Susan Butler's East to the Dawn and »

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen I know I shouldn't be surprised the Blu-ray, 2-disc DVD and single-disc DVD are the numbers 1, 2 and 3 best-sellers at Amazon this week, but for some reason I would have thought all the negative talk about this film surrounding its release would have discouraged folks to throw to down their hard-earned cash to endure this pummeling one more time. However, I can say it is nice to see prices on Blu-rays are dropping slightly, so much to the point the Blu-ray edition of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is actually $3 less than the 2-disc DVD, at only $19.99. That's all I really have to say about this one. Monsoon Wedding (Criterion Collection) I just reviewed the Blu-ray edition of this one (read that here) and was really impressed with the entire package, which not only includes Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding, »

Blu-ray Review: Monsoon Wedding (Criterion Collection)

20 October 2009 2:43 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

My experience with Mira Nair is limited at best. I did not enjoy Vanity Fair and The Namesake bored me beyond measure, but that's where my time watching her films ended prior to Criterion's latest Blu-ray release of Monsoon Wedding, a spectacular dramedy surrounding a Punjabi wedding, which instantly reminded me of Jonathan Demme's 2008 effort Rachel Getting Married, but at least this one was fun to watch.

Monsoon Wedding was released in 2001 and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film by the Golden Globes, but if I'm not mistaken it wasn't her first knockout film, which I presume to be 1988's Salaam Bombay!, a film I now hope to see. One thing I have always noticed about Nair is her excellent use of color, Vanity Fair particularly stands out in this regard, but I have always been so bored by her work. To the contrary, Monsoon Wedding is a lively, »

Exclusive: Hilary Swank Soars as Amelia Earhart

18 October 2009 9:30 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

In a hangar in Fairfield, New Jersey’s Essex County Airport, two-time Academy Award-winner Hilary Swank and director Mira Nair (The Namesake; Monsoon Wedding) recently joined historical authors Elgen Long and Susan Butler and the President of the 99s, a women’s aviation organization, to discuss the making of Amelia, a biopic about Amelia Earhart, the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and who pioneered the way for other women to break into aviation and aeronautics.

Aboard her Lockheed Electra airplane (reproduction from the film pictured above) Earhart disappeared in 1937 over the Pacific Ocean in her attempt to circumnavigate the globe. Her body was never recovered.

Amelia is already garnering attention as a Best Actress frontrunner for Swank’s performance. Swank dedicated weeks to refining Earhart’s speech pattern and spent months gaining a better understanding of the freckle-faced, gung-ho adventurer and legendary international icon.

New York, I Love You: Mira Nair

14 October 2009 4:30 AM, PDT | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

With eleven directors from around the world depicting varied interpretations of love over a quick ninety minutes, New York, I Love You is a veritable love letter to our fair city. (What other city, after all, has a heart at the center of its slogan?) 'A collective feature film,' New York, I Love You is the second in the Cities of Love series, conceived of by producer Emmanuel Benbihy and set in motion in 2006 with Paris, je t'aime. (Shanghai and Rio are the next two cities with films in development.) Mira Nair (The Namesake, Monsoon Wedding) was one of ten directors asked to contribute a short film to the project. The rules were simple: 1) the neighborhood(s) the story takes place in must be visually identifiable, 2) the story must have some broadly categorized element of love, 3) each shoot would be two days and two ... »

Irrfan Khan in 'Indian Summer' with Cate Blanchett and Hugh Grant

13 October 2009 2:41 PM, PDT | The Bollywood Ticket | See recent The Bollywood Ticket news »

Awarding-winning Indian actor Irrfan Khan may be playing India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, alongside British actor Hugh Grant as India's last British viceroy, Lord Mountbatten, and Australian actress Cate Blanchett as the viceroy's wife, Edwina, in an upcoming film called 'Indian Summer,' about the last days of British rule in India—and the supposed affair between Nehru and Edwina.

The film is based on the book 'Indian Summer: The Secret History of the End of an Empire,' by British historian Alex von Tunzelmann, which chronicles the transition of power from Mountbatten to Nehru in the summer of 1947.

The Indian government has reportedly given its approval to the film on certain conditions, including the removal from the script of some intimate scenes between Nehru and Edwina and a statement by the filmmakers that the picture is a work of fiction.

Doha Tff: Spotlight on Mira Nair

9 October 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

Mira Nair is amazing. She is a powerful woman director who has made some of the most interesting films of the past 20 years, from the breakthrough Salaam Bombay! (1988) to the jubilant Monsoon Wedding (2001) to the sublime The Namesake (2006). Her films cannot be characterized by theme, location, time period, or type; rather, the only criteria is that stories illuminate the human condition. Nair back this month with not one, but two new films: Amelia, which will open the 2009 Doha Tribeca Film Festival on October 29, and New York, I Love You, a companion piece to the 2006 hit, Paris, je t'aime. In the above clip, from the Doha Tff, Nair talks about the diverse inspirations for her films, which keep her on her toes. 'If we don't tell our stories, no one else will,' she says, explaining she likes her films to 'cross borders.' Indeed! Watch the trailer for ... »

For Hilary Swank, "Amelia" is a labor of love.  The two-time Oscar winning actress executive produced the biopic of legendary aviator Amelia Earhart and stuck by the production through fits and starts over the years.  In fact, Fox Searchlight didn't come on board until a few weeks into filming.  But it's not hard to see why."Amelia" was directed by Mira Nair who had a sleeper hit with Searchlight's "The Namesake" and has a long resume of excellence with "Monsoon Wedding" and the HBO TV movie "Hysterical Blindness" to her credit.   She's recruited a crew with many accolades of their own including... »

Fox Searchlight is on fire today -- they've been lighting up the Reject HQ red phone. First, they sent us details on the highly anticipated release Gentlemen Broncos, and now we've got a first look at the poster for another upcoming film, Amelia, starring Hilary Swank as Amelia Earhart. Not much to say here, except that it has a sense of longing -- as if Amelia Earhart knows what is ahead of her. I don't want to spoil anything, but I think we all know what's coming for her. And if I were her and I knew how this movie ends, I'd be sad too. The film's details are below, courtesy of Fox Searchlight, followed by the poster. Directed by: Mira Nair Written by: Ronald Bass Produced by: Ted Waitt, Lydia Dean Pilcher and Kevin Hyman Cast: Hilary Swank, Richard Gere, Ewan McGregor, Christopher Eccleston Visionary. Lover. Irrfan and Divya have Clothed Sex

4 July 2009 12:56 PM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Irrfan Khan and Divya Dutta may have been uncomfortable when director Jennifer Lynch of the upcoming Hollywood flick Hissss, informed them of a love-making scene which required them to get real and strip down to the bare, but being the professionals that they are, they knew they would have to take the plunge. “I had absolutely no problem when my director Jennifer Lynch said I would have to take off all my clothes for a lovemaking scene with Divya Dutta, who plays my wife. But I suddenly thought that Indian couples make love with their clothes on and I conveyed the same to Jennifer,” explained Khan.

The actor explained to his director how the culture is much more conservative and sex happens with clothes. The director was confused until Khan gave her the example of how he and Tabu indulged in some clothed “violent” sex in The Namesake. Lynch was unconvinced. »
