'P.S. I Love You' writer Cecilia Ahern gives birth to baby girl (IrishCentral)

Cecilia Ahern, the daughter of Ireland’s former Taoiseach (prime minister), Bertie, had a 6-pound baby girl in Dublin’s Rotunda Hospital yesterday. Ahern and her partner, David Keoghan, issued a statement saying they were “delighted to announce the arrival of a baby girl, Robin” according to the Belfast Telegraph. As well as being daughter of the former Taoiseach, Cecilia has earned fame in her own right. The 28-year-old has written seven bestselling books, and her first book “P.S. I Love You,” became a Hollywood movie starring Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler. The film was about a young widow who finds 10 letters that her husband wrote for her before he died. Ahern has not experienced that sadness in her own life. She has been a brilliant commercial success, and is looking forward to becoming a mother, the Belfast Telegraph reported. She said the baby was “the greatest gift I've ever been given. »

Box Office

Sandra Bullock’s The Blind Side just keeps doing better and better. The uplifting sports drama has took the top spot with an impressive $20 million after three weeks on the charts. 2009 has been a great year for Bullock and if Warner Bros. gives the actress the expected Oscar push then 2010 shouldn’t be too bad either.

After a whopping eight Harry Potter films, Warner Bros. is just now beginning to envision an upcoming film slate that doesn't include a Harry Potter movie. So what do they do? Warner Keeps Fantasy Going For 'Beautiful Creatures'

Will new "gothic" fantasy novel adaptation Beautiful Creatures capture the teen crowds in the same fashion as Harry Potter and emo schoolgirl favourite Twilight?

Richard Lagravenese, director of P.S. I Love You and Freedom Writers, plans to find out, as he takes on the direction of the story of a cursed and confused girl in the Southern town of Gatlin who makes a supernatural connection with a mysterious boy she meets.

Beautiful Creature is the first of a 5 part series written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl and definitely vibes the whole star-crossed-lovers, magical-mystery formula which seems to be consistently successful at the moment.

With a largely positive reaction to the book on its release, Beautiful Creatures may turn out to be the hot new fantasy we need to watch. What say you? Comments in the box below.

Warner Brothers has acquired Beautiful Creatures, the first of a five-novel southern Gothic fantasy series by authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. The book is technically being released today, but the many positive reviews over at Amazon shows that it's been available to some for a few months. Richard Lagravanese (P.S. Every other week until Deathly Hallows hits theaters we'll probably be hearing about some new potential Harry Potter replacement. Even though there are still two more years until the final Potter movie arrives, studios are starting to setup projects that to fill the "coming-of-age wizard" genre that will be left open once that franchise comes to an end. Variety reports that Warner Brothers has hired Richard Lagravenese, of P.S. I Love You and Freedom Writers, to write and direct an adaptation of Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl's novel Beautiful Creatures. Warner Bros may be making the big bucks by adapting the Harry Potter series into eight blockbuster films but, like every major studio, they’re watching major money go to Summit Entertainment with their Twilight saga.  The Twilight Saga: New Moon has made $474 million worldwide in just 10 days, snatching records from WB’s recent hits The Dark Knight and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in the process.

I’ve already listed the films given the kiss of death by being called “the next Harry Potter,” but now the tables are turned as WB hurries to tap the young female market.  Twilight envy might explain why the studio has optioned “Beautiful Creatures,” a similar supernatural tale of teen romance.

Beautiful Creatures... Following a Beautiful Trend?

I remember when the TV show Friends was at its apex, and all of a sudden every channel, including the show's own NBC, had at least one Friends clone.  Ever since, I've referred to this as the "Friends phenomenon." 

Flash foward a decade or so, and I might as well call this the "Twilight phenomenon."  The CW network has already cashed in with The Vampire Diaries, with that show focusing on teen vamps and longing stares.  Now the literary world has hopped in, with Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl's young adult novel Beautiful Creatures.  According to the book's official website, the novel is the tale of normal mortal Ethan Wate and the supernatural Lena Duchannes, whose secret is sure to turn the Southern town of Gatlin upside down.  So this is basically Twilight for the plantation crowd.

Just recently Robert Pattinson (you know him? He’s some fella in some film about vampires or something) lamented the lack of acting jobs in the UK, explaining that’s why so many Brits head to Hollywood for work. And boy, he’s certainly right. Tinseltown is chokers with UK talent, both in front of the camera and behind, men and women and character actors as well as top leading lights. And so with this wealth of home-grown stars, online rental giant LOVEFiLM has asked their subscribers to vote for their top British actor and coming out on top is none other than Scottish beef-cake, Gerard Butler. Loosening Up More Uptight Women w/ 'Leap Year'

Who started the whole cliche where an uptight American woman hits Ireland and finds out how to loosen up by a sexy, foreign man? There's something in the water over there in Hollywood's version of the country that makes every bloody romantic comedy feature this premise. It's not as bad as something like The Ugly Truth, that's for sure, but it pretty darned blatant.

Following in the footsteps of Matchmaker, P.S. I Love You, and other romantic fare, MSN has debuted a trailer for Leap Year (check it out after the jump), the film where Matthew Goode gets to recover from the trauma of losing his new wife to a female florist (Imagine Me and You), and steal a desperate Amy Adams from the likes of Adam Scott. Now granted, she is on her way to Dublin and meets the man in Wales, but they're still heading to the land of shamrocks. »

Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind, or at least that's what the good folks over at Gawker seem to think when it comes to Gerard Butler. In the wake of a number two movie at the box office and some not-so-great reviews of his hosting gig last weekend for SNL, Gawker has issued the Scottish actor the following decree: Gerard Butler, You Are Officially on Movie Star Probation. According to them, it's time we all intervened to save him from himself. But if he doesn't shape up, Gawker has decided the only option is that the actor will be "banned from all movies, tabloids, red carpet affairs, awards ceremonies, and celebrity relationships. If he can stay out of the press for three years, he may be rewarded with the starring role on a CBS procedural." Tough, but fair.

Sure, it's all in good fun, but I'll admit they have a point. »

The popular gossip news site has put the Scottish actor on “movie star probation,” a status that has been previously awarded to Irishman Colin Farrell and Englishman Jude Law, two “guys who were made into leading men before they had time to prove that they had the chops for such a responsibility.” In Gawker’s opinion, both Butler’s comedic turn on “Saturday Night Live” and his new flick “Law Abiding Citizens” “suck,” and the actor hasn’t made anything great since “300.” The site points to Irish film “P.S. Gerard Bulter and Jamie Foxx Switched Roles for Law Abiding Citizen

Despite receiving less-than-stellar reviews, the new thriller starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx took the #2 spot at the box office this past weekend, bringing in more than $20 million. According to Butler, who also produced Law Abiding Citizen, a last-minute change ended up making for a very different movie.

Law Abiding Citizen tells the story of a father (Butler) who seeks violent revenge against the criminals who murdered his family and the district attorney (Foxx) who lets them off easy. Butler, who was initially going to play the D.A., became fascinated with exploring the character arc of the father and switched roles with Foxx.

Photo: Overture Films "Some justice is better than no justice at all," says Jamie Foxx playing Nick Price, a Philadelphia prosecutor in charge of bringing justice to the two men that killed Clyde Shelton's (Gerard Butler) wife and young daughter in Law Abiding Citizen. It's a statement that speaks to the cracks in the American justice system and as a result Clyde is going to see to it these cracks are turned into canyons once he learns only one of the men will be sentenced to death while the other serves a meager three-year sentence. This is something Clyde simply can't tolerate.

Law Abiding Citizen is madness, mayhem and carnage all wrapped up into one big dumb actioner filled with plot and logic holes galore. Fortunately, it's too much fun along the way to even concern yourself with the hows and the whys of it all. »
