Cecilia Ahern, the daughter of Ireland’s former Taoiseach (prime minister), Bertie, had a 6-pound baby girl in Dublin’s Rotunda Hospital yesterday. Ahern and her partner, David Keoghan, issued a statement saying they were “delighted to announce the arrival of a baby girl, Robin” according to the Belfast Telegraph. As well as being daughter of the former Taoiseach, Cecilia has earned fame in her own right. The 28-year-old has written seven bestselling books, and her first book “P.S. I Love You,” became a Hollywood movie starring Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler. The film was about a young widow who finds 10 letters that her husband wrote for her before he died. Ahern has not experienced that sadness in her own life. She has been a brilliant commercial success, and is looking forward to becoming a mother, the Belfast Telegraph reported. She said the baby was “the greatest gift I've ever been given. »

It’s Sunday and that means that it’s Wrap Up time.
This week:
The box office is Blind Sided; if you go down to the woods today you might see Tom Cavanagh in Yogi Bear; Leonardo DiCaprio knows Jack Frost in The Guardians; Have you ever heard Gun, With Occasional Music? Beautiful Creatures say P.S I Love You; John Madden will Dolittle directing with My Fair Lady and it’s all in the double barrel name as Paul Thomas Anderson and Philip Seymour Hoffman find religion.
Box Office
Sandra Bullock’s The Blind Side just keeps doing better and better. The uplifting sports drama has took the top spot with an impressive $20 million after three weeks on the charts. 2009 has been a great year for Bullock and if Warner Bros. gives the actress the expected Oscar push then 2010 shouldn’t be too bad either.

Christmas shopping on a budget is tough. So if you’re carefully watching the pennies when you hit the stores this festive season, we’ve found just the thing – the boxer shorts seen on Gerard Butler in romantic drama, P.S. I Love You. These babies aren’t too tough on the bank balance, are practical (so he’ll actually use them rather than just shove them somewhere and forget all about them), super stylish and pack enough novelty to bring a smile to his face. Never have pants looked so cool! »

After a whopping eight Harry Potter films, Warner Bros. is just now beginning to envision an upcoming film slate that doesn't include a Harry Potter movie. So what do they do? Well, they look around for another coming-of-age property – perhaps one that would entice some of those Twilight fans to fork over their dollars. Variety tells us that the studio has officially begun the Harry Potter Replacement Project by acquiring Beautiful Creatures, the first book in a five-novel series. Richard Lagravanese (P.S. I Love You, Freedom Writers) has signed on to write and direct the film that, if successful, will probably spawn a new franchise. What's it about, you ask? Well, we've got teenagers from small towns and star-crossed lovers – it's sorta like Twilight, but wrapped in...

Will new "gothic" fantasy novel adaptation Beautiful Creatures capture the teen crowds in the same fashion as Harry Potter and emo schoolgirl favourite Twilight?
Richard Lagravenese, director of P.S. I Love You and Freedom Writers, plans to find out, as he takes on the direction of the story of a cursed and confused girl in the Southern town of Gatlin who makes a supernatural connection with a mysterious boy she meets.
Beautiful Creature is the first of a 5 part series written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl and definitely vibes the whole star-crossed-lovers, magical-mystery formula which seems to be consistently successful at the moment.
With a largely positive reaction to the book on its release, Beautiful Creatures may turn out to be the hot new fantasy we need to watch. What say you? Comments in the box below.

Warner Brothers has acquired Beautiful Creatures, the first of a five-novel southern Gothic fantasy series by authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. The book is technically being released today, but the many positive reviews over at Amazon shows that it's been available to some for a few months. Richard Lagravanese (P.S. I Love You, Freedom Writers) is scripting and directing. An excerpt from the book description, via Amazon: Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she's struggling to conceal her power and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. Every other week until Deathly Hallows hits theaters we'll probably be hearing about some new potential Harry Potter replacement. Even though there are still two more years until the final Potter movie arrives, studios are starting to setup projects that to fill the "coming-of-age wizard" genre that will be left open once that franchise comes to an end. Variety reports that Warner Brothers has hired Richard Lagravenese, of P.S. I Love You and Freedom Writers, to write and direct an adaptation of Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl's novel Beautiful Creatures. The book just hit shelves and is about a young witch named Lena Duchannes. Beautiful Creatures sounds much more like Twilight than it does Harry Potter. In the first book, apathetic high-school student Ethan Wate meets and becomes bewitched by Lena Duchannes, a 16-year-old whose family has moved to the small South Carolina town where he lives. Warner Bros may be making the big bucks by adapting the Harry Potter series into eight blockbuster films but, like every major studio, they’re watching major money go to Summit Entertainment with their Twilight saga. The Twilight Saga: New Moon has made $474 million worldwide in just 10 days, snatching records from WB’s recent hits The Dark Knight and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in the process.
I’ve already listed the films given the kiss of death by being called “the next Harry Potter,” but now the tables are turned as WB hurries to tap the young female market. Twilight envy might explain why the studio has optioned “Beautiful Creatures,” a similar supernatural tale of teen romance.
The first book (out of a planned five), from authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, officially hits shelves tomorrow (December 1) and centers on a small town boy who meets the girl »

I remember when the TV show Friends was at its apex, and all of a sudden every channel, including the show's own NBC, had at least one Friends clone. Ever since, I've referred to this as the "Friends phenomenon."
Flash foward a decade or so, and I might as well call this the "Twilight phenomenon." The CW network has already cashed in with The Vampire Diaries, with that show focusing on teen vamps and longing stares. Now the literary world has hopped in, with Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl's young adult novel Beautiful Creatures. According to the book's official website, the novel is the tale of normal mortal Ethan Wate and the supernatural Lena Duchannes, whose secret is sure to turn the Southern town of Gatlin upside down. So this is basically Twilight for the plantation crowd.

Tomorrow marks the publication of Beautiful Creatures, a young adult novel from Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl that centers on a mortal high school boy living in Gatlin, South Carolina and his love for a very strange girl with some mysterious powers. Her name is Lena Duchannes and she's trying her best to conceal her powers. Sound intriguing? Well the publishing world has been very kind to Beautiful Creatures with glowing advance reviews. (Little, Brown, the publishers behind Twilight are behind this book.) Hollywood has also been interested in it for some time and the book's rights have just been optioned by Warner Bros. »

This will end soon enough, we tell ourselves. Studios and networks will eventually quit trying to ride on the heels of "Twilight" and get back to making supernatural beasties scary again. Sometime soon. I hope. For now we have to endure announcements like this. Warner Bros. has acquired the screen rights to the five-part young adult series "Beautiful Creatures" by authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. Story follows a young man who falls for a witch. Their love has to overcome a curse and...well, you get the picture. Richard Lagravanese, who penned The Fisher King , The Ref and recently directed P.S. I Love You,/b>, is adapting the novels and will direct. »

Gerard Butler has been named the best British actor in Hollywood. The Scottish hunk, who is best known for playing King Leonidas in “300,” beat a host of stars, including Christian Bale and double-Oscar winner and Irish citizen Daniel Day Lewis to win the title in a poll of more than 1,000 British film fans by the DVD rental service LoveFilm. “Revolutionary Road” actress Kate Winslet, who managed to land fourth place, was one of only two women to feature in the top 10. “Atonement” star James McAvoy came in fifth ahead of Hugh Laurie of “House,” at six. “Twilight” actor Robert Pattinson came seventh despite the huge popularity of the vampire franchise. “Transporter” star Jason Statham landed the eight spot and Scottish actor Ewan McGregor ranked ninth. Emily Blunt of “The Devil Wears Prada” rounded out the top 10. Helen Cowley, the editor at LoveFilm, believes the poll shows 40-year-old “P.S. I Love You »

Just recently Robert Pattinson (you know him? He’s some fella in some film about vampires or something) lamented the lack of acting jobs in the UK, explaining that’s why so many Brits head to Hollywood for work. And boy, he’s certainly right. Tinseltown is chokers with UK talent, both in front of the camera and behind, men and women and character actors as well as top leading lights. And so with this wealth of home-grown stars, online rental giant LOVEFiLM has asked their subscribers to vote for their top British actor and coming out on top is none other than Scottish beef-cake, Gerard Butler. Yup, the Paisley-born actor has channelled his sparkly-eyed charm into both boys favourites like 300, Unlawful Citizen (pictured) and RocknRolla and more female-friendly fare like The Ugly Truth and P.S. I Love You and it’s obviously worked well for him. But who did he beat in the poll? »

Who started the whole cliche where an uptight American woman hits Ireland and finds out how to loosen up by a sexy, foreign man? There's something in the water over there in Hollywood's version of the country that makes every bloody romantic comedy feature this premise. It's not as bad as something like The Ugly Truth, that's for sure, but it pretty darned blatant.
Following in the footsteps of Matchmaker, P.S. I Love You, and other romantic fare, MSN has debuted a trailer for Leap Year (check it out after the jump), the film where Matthew Goode gets to recover from the trauma of losing his new wife to a female florist (Imagine Me and You), and steal a desperate Amy Adams from the likes of Adam Scott. Now granted, she is on her way to Dublin and meets the man in Wales, but they're still heading to the land of shamrocks. »

In romantic drama, P.S. I Love You Holly (Hilary Swank) bemoans her lack of haute couture fashion ("I buy everything on eBay. It doesn’t count when you’re wearing Marc Jacobs from Minneapolis!” she laments), but we don’t quite believe her. A little snoop around her wardrobe reveals a fair share of tasty designer names, including Diane von Furstenberg and Zac Posen (see Related Content, right) and it’s an item from Philip Lim’s 3.1 collection that has caught our eye – the houndstooth box coat. A gorgeous piece that is just ideal for winter 2009. »

Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind, or at least that's what the good folks over at Gawker seem to think when it comes to Gerard Butler. In the wake of a number two movie at the box office and some not-so-great reviews of his hosting gig last weekend for SNL, Gawker has issued the Scottish actor the following decree: Gerard Butler, You Are Officially on Movie Star Probation. According to them, it's time we all intervened to save him from himself. But if he doesn't shape up, Gawker has decided the only option is that the actor will be "banned from all movies, tabloids, red carpet affairs, awards ceremonies, and celebrity relationships. If he can stay out of the press for three years, he may be rewarded with the starring role on a CBS procedural." Tough, but fair.
Sure, it's all in good fun, but I'll admit they have a point. »

Gerard Butler may be a hunk, but according to Gawker.com, he’s no movie star. The popular gossip news site has put the Scottish actor on “movie star probation,” a status that has been previously awarded to Irishman Colin Farrell and Englishman Jude Law, two “guys who were made into leading men before they had time to prove that they had the chops for such a responsibility.” In Gawker’s opinion, both Butler’s comedic turn on “Saturday Night Live” and his new flick “Law Abiding Citizens” “suck,” and the actor hasn’t made anything great since “300.” The site points to Irish film “P.S. I Love You” as an example, the Cecelia Ahern-written rom-com they call a “box office flop” and “critical dud.” Gawker has hope for the hunky star, however, in his upcoming film with Jennifer Aniston, “The Bounty,” which has some potential. However, if he fails to deliver, »

Despite receiving less-than-stellar reviews, the new thriller starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx took the #2 spot at the box office this past weekend, bringing in more than $20 million. According to Butler, who also produced Law Abiding Citizen, a last-minute change ended up making for a very different movie.
Law Abiding Citizen tells the story of a father (Butler) who seeks violent revenge against the criminals who murdered his family and the district attorney (Foxx) who lets them off easy. Butler, who was initially going to play the D.A., became fascinated with exploring the character arc of the father and switched roles with Foxx.
Initially, I was playing the prosecutor and just before the movie started, I swapped over because I had such a fascination with him. But it was always my argument and my purpose that at a certain point in the movie, Clyde turns, that he goes too far, »

Gerard Butler in Law Abiding Citizen
Photo: Overture Films "Some justice is better than no justice at all," says Jamie Foxx playing Nick Price, a Philadelphia prosecutor in charge of bringing justice to the two men that killed Clyde Shelton's (Gerard Butler) wife and young daughter in Law Abiding Citizen. It's a statement that speaks to the cracks in the American justice system and as a result Clyde is going to see to it these cracks are turned into canyons once he learns only one of the men will be sentenced to death while the other serves a meager three-year sentence. This is something Clyde simply can't tolerate.
Law Abiding Citizen is madness, mayhem and carnage all wrapped up into one big dumb actioner filled with plot and logic holes galore. Fortunately, it's too much fun along the way to even concern yourself with the hows and the whys of it all. »
