An “Anti-Smoking In Movies” campaign started making the rounds last Wednesday with a moving billboard that reads, “Which movie studios will cause me to smoke this summer?” It also drives traffic to their Facebook page, which includes statistics and video clips that support their efforts.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, the California Youth Advocacy Network, and the American Medical Association Alliance all partnered for the push to raise MPAA ratings for movies that include smoking and discourage it in future films. The roving sign will make routine stops in front of the major movie studios and the company with the worst record of summer smoking films will incur a strategically-placed, scathing billboard in September.
Ironically, the picture on the right shows the ad making a stop at Walt Disney Studios, which in July 2007 became the first studio to “discourage depictions of cigarette smoking.” Nor is the group »

Wednesday morning at 3am I got the best and worst news yet about my growing collection of high-definition home video titles: Warner Brothers is offering a brand new program where consumers can exchange their old HD DVDs for Blu-rays at a cost of around five bucks. For a person like yours truly whose apartment has been referred to as a "crack den for cinephiles," this is obviously a great thing, since it means that I can replace classic movies like The Ant Bully and Scooby-Doo: The Movie without having to eat the cost of two high-def discs.
But for a person like yours truly who not only embraced HD DVD wholeheartedly, buying as many titles as possible just weeks before the format was officially abandoned by the studios, but then immediately replaced virtually all titles in my collection of any real value when I later got a Blu-ray player, this »

The Associated Press is reporting that Ricardo Montalban died this morning at the age of 88. He was at his home, although no cause of death was given. Montalban will probably be known to many as Mr. Roarke in Fantasy Island, but if you’re a geek like me, you’ll always remember him as James T. Kirk’s nemesis, Khan, in Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan. He was also deliciously evil and hilarious in the first Naked Gun film. More recently, Montalban turned his attention to animated series and properties aimed at children, making appearances in Kim Possible, Family Guy, The Ant Bully, and the Spy Kids series.
I’ll be shouting out a “Khaaaaan!!!!” tonight for old time’s sake, but it won’t be out of bitterness and anger like Shatner’s utterance. Instead, it will be a lamentation for the loss of one of cinema’s all-time greatest villains. »
