Please note: There are several reviews already posted for this film that are very suspicious. After all, with an overall IMDb score of 1.2, you would NOT expect all five reviews to give it a 10! Additionally, the reviewers in 4 of the cases never reviewed another film (as of 12/11/09) and the 5th only reviewed one other film. Who would sign up with IMDb just to give a horrible movie a 10?
Shortly after this movie begins, you realize just how broad the comedy is going to be. The Chinese doctor is a giant kooky stereotype and the Jewish kids in the elementary school all love money and that's all they talk about and play with when the film shows the elementary school (I thought this sort of thing went out of style about 1945). Next, you are treated to a kid who very graphically eats boogers--very graphically...again and again. And then there's the gay kid...ugghh! Ten minutes into the film, and so far everyone is a giant walking, talking stereotype--broad and not especially enlightened. Now I am NOT a particularly politically correct sort of person, but I was clearly annoyed by all this.
Suddenly, ten years pass and the kids are now older...and even more stereotypical. The gay kid is probably the broadest and most over-the-top caricature I've ever seen (making the gay character in REVENGE OF THE NERDS seem more like John Wayne in comparison)--and sure to offend anyone. I was offended because of the stereotype and because this was all so poorly written and gross. Gay-bashing language and the like just seem beneath a film...but not this one! A bit later in the film, he is raped by a woman to "teach him what it's like to experience a woman" (wow...and this is supposed to be a comedy!?).
Later, both a Jewish ('Marty Shalom Weinstein'-what a subtle name) and gay guy decide to become pro wrestlers--although both appear to weigh about 130 pounds each and have absolutely no muscle. The gay guy does it because he likes to have men touching him and the Jewish guy does it to impress a tough girl whose parents are pro wrestlers. Clearly they are unprepared and it's ridiculous in every way.
Much of the footage at about the 50 minute mark consists of a lot of pro wrestling. If this is your sort of thing, you'll like it--if not, then it's a chore to watch these matches. Eventually you see the two guys fight a tag-team match--against the lady and her boyfriend that raped the gay guy earlier in the film. I am sure this is a first in film history...and hopefully the last. The whole match eventually becomes an insane free-for-all--and is both ridiculous and...well,...ridiculous--especially as the two weaklings are inexplicably declared the winners--thanks to a masked wrestler who comes to their rescue.
The rest of the film consists of the Jewish guy working hard to keep this cute lady, as because of a misunderstanding he thinks that she no longer cares about him. She still adores him and can't understand this. It's all very contrived...plus by this point in the film, who cares?! The same can be said for what happens next.
Well, based on what I've told you about the plot, it's obvious that this is a stupid film. However, it makes up for this by also being extremely broadly acted and lacking any subtlety or skill. One or two of the gags worked, but apart from one or two tiny moments of fun, the other 99.7% of the film was bad....very, very bad. To quote Kurtz..."...the horror"--a perfect way to sum up this lousy film.
By the way, didn't anyone think it odd that a yamulke-wearing Jewish man would be marrying someone in a Christian church in the finale?!? Just who thought this made sense?
