Their Best Role: Hugh Jackman in 'The Fountain'

When you mention Hugh Jackman to any discerning cinephile, or drop his name in a game of Dream Casting, people will sneer. "That man cannot act." At best, they'll say "Well, he's really good as Wolverine!" before complimenting his physique.
While he certainy is good as Wolverine, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with his rippling definition, he can act. It seems he can't pick a script to save his life, but he can act.
Let's go back, back, way back to 2006 when he had a year where he steered clear of romantic comedies, empty action flicks, and X-Men spin-offs. I don't know how the stars aligned for him, or how the good scripts made their way to the top, but he had two stellar films: The Prestige and The Fountain. He was very good in the former, though in the end The Prestige just demanded a lot of grimness and

Penguins, Nicole Kidman and Narnia – Paul Howlett picks his film highlights
Christmas Eve
Over the Hedge
(Tim Johnson, Karey Kirkpatrick, 2006) 4.25pm, BBC1
A DreamWorks animated adventure in which Rj, the cynical racoon (laconically voiced by Bruce Willis) teaches a burrowful of innocent woodland animals to forage off the waste of an encroaching housing estate rather than rely on boring old natural food, before inevitably seeing the error of his ways. Plenty of good slapstick fun for kids and cine-literate gags for adults, although it all seems a bit glib compared to Shrek and co.
Corpse Bride
(Tim Burton, Mike Johnson, 2005) 6pm, ITV1
Life, in Burton's typically weird and ghoulish fantasy, is a dull, grey affair: death is much more colourful and fun, as young Victor (voiced by Johnny Depp) discovers when he is whisked into the underworld by the maggoty Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham Carter). Trouble is, he's in love

Although he may not be familiar to U.S. audiences, Astro Boy is no newcomer to the animated universe. Engineered for young Japanese audiences in the 1950’s by manga artist Osamu Tezuka, the mechanical moppet has long been a cultural icon in his native country; think Mickey Mouse with electronic innards. Drawn like a hybrid of Bob’s Big Boy and Namor the Submariner, Astro was a hero with the extraordinary qualities of mythic supermen wrapped in a kid-shaped shell. Now he shows up again, on American shores, in a bright and bold animated film by David Bowers (Flushed Away) that stays true to its source material while offering both children and their parents a welcome reprieve from the recent run of tepid children’s cartoons.
Metro City is a flying megalopolis that thrives in luxury while the polluted Earth below it languishes in poverty. The key to the city’s prosperity is robots.

We should have seen this coming. Actually, alert commenters Jab, Andres and Topy did see it coming, taking Paranormal Activity to win the weekend. And win it did. It gained 12 percent over last weekend, becoming only the second film this decade to win the box office crown for the first time in its fifth weekend (the other being Gran Torino). Let's break it down!
#1 movie predicted correctly: 0 Weeks In A Row
1. Paranormal Activity
Wowsers. You have to hand it to Paramount. They let the fans do all the heavy lifting on a great film. It's nice to see it vanquish the sixth effort in a tired franchise, isn't it?
Result: 22.0 million (My rank: #2, $8.3m off)
2. Saw VI
Here's how the first five Saw franchise openings went: $18m / $32m / $34m / $32m / $30m. As you can see, this was the lowest ever. But if Paranormal hadn't ever been made I think $30m was a given.

Astro Boy is the moderately anticipated new CGI-animated adventure hitting theaters, based on the 1952 Japanese manga series created by Osama Tezuka, which was followed by a television series beginning in 1963. This new film was helmed by David Bowers, which is his second directorial outing after Flushed Away in 2006.
The film tells the story of a brilliant young boy, the prodigal son of scientist Dr. Tenma (Nicolas Cage) who is developing a powerful new infinitely renewable source of clean energy recovered from a fallen comet. Naturally, his groundbreaking research is funded by the military and now they want to integrate this new power into powerful weapons.
In a tragic accident, Dr. Tenma’s son is killed, leading him to use this incredible power to recreate his son as the ultimate robot, equipped with endless defensive abilities to keep him safe. The robot has his son’s memory, but not the realization

Kate Winslet stopped to help her son Joe adjust his hood before the pair headed home together Tuesday afternoon in NYC. Earlier this week Kate reunited with her Flushed Away costar Hugh Jackman on the set of the Farrelly Brothers latest project, which is a series of short films. While Hugh's schedule's been jam packed with blockbusters - and preparing for screen time with Robert Pattinson- Kate's been taking it easy this year. She supported her husband Sam as he promoted Away We Go and the only project currently on her horizon is the possible cable miniseries Mildred Pierce.

David Bowers' Astro Boy Inspired by Star Wars

While Astro Boy is hardly a household name in America, he is something of a cultural icon in his native Japan. In fact, a six-foot statue of "Tetsuwan Atom" (Astro Boy) was erected outside Ikeda Elementary School in Osaka's Ikeda City to honor Osamu Tezuka, the man who created the character in the '50s.
Director David Bowers (Flushed Away) was the man tasked by Imagi Animation Studios with updating Astro Boy for modern American audiences. Bowers told AMC that he looked to some classic sci-fi films for inspiration.
I think things like Star Wars and Blade Runner have just been so influential that if you make a science fiction film you can't help but include elements. But I was just after making a very cool science fiction film, so I just threw all of the things I loved into a giant melting pot and tried to make something original from it.

Awards season takes flight with celebrated director Mira Nair's biopic charting the early life and rise to prominence of pioneering aviatrix Amelia Earhart. Hilary Swank produced and stars as the elusive Kansas-born pilot as she perilously navigates the skies, the trappings of fame and her romances with publisher George Putnam (Richard Gere) and Gene Vidal (Ewan McGregor). Christopher Eccleston, Cherry Jones and Mia Wasikowska join the heavyweight cast in this pic whose Oscar-friendly subject matter may allow it to fly under the Academy's expanded Best Picture tent.

Initially unveiled at the San Diego Comic-Con to thunderous applause, Imagi's latest animated adventure, Astro Boy, debuts in theaters this week and director David Bowers is hoping that American audiences will connect with his take on the iconic Japanese character created by Osamu Tezuka.
It's such a rich story, and I think its themes are universal. I think American audiences are very used to superheroes, so it's not an enormous stretch for them. The only difficulty was having it be such a beloved character and having to decide what to retain and what to get rid of.
I like origin stories. I think Richard Donner's Superman is still just about the best superhero movie ever made. And I think it's interesting to see where these characters come from and what their roots are. I think it would be hard to jump into an Astro Boy movie with him already fighting robots and battling aliens.

Exclusive images from the upcoming Astro Boy film have debuted online. The movie, which opens on October 23 nationwide, is based on the 1950’s manga by Osamu Tezuka. You can see one of the images directly above, and check out the others over at Comic Book Resources.
In Astro Boy, a scientist named Dr. Tenma creates a child-like robot as a replacement for his lost child. However, unable to deal with his grief, Tenma sends Astro Boy off on a journey of self-discovery, which apparently involves fighting as some sort of robot gladiator.
The movie, directed by English animator David Bowers (Flushed Away), is ostensibly a modern retelling of the titular character’s origins.
Released by Summit Entertainment and Imagi Studios, Astro Boy features the voice talents of Freddie Highmore, Kristen Bell, Nathan Lane, and Nicolas Cage.

Looks like a little bit Iron Giant, a little bit Transformers, a little bit Robocop.
The real question is, however: Is it a little bit Pinocchio? Does Astro long to be a real boy?
This is from David Bowers, who cowrote and codirected the wonderfully original Flushed Away, so maybe it won’t be as tedious as it looks...
Astro Boy opens in the U.S. on October 23, and in the U.K. on January 29, 2010.

More than two weeks prior to the theatrical release of "Astro Boy", Summit Entertainment has released another brand new clip for viewing pleasure. Put out via Yahoo! Prior to the release of this clip, two other clips had been brought forth. One sees Astro in a high-speed chase around the Metro City to avoid capture after just learning that he is different from the other kids. The other one reels in the footage where he is thrown into a gladiator arena and is forced to face off against bigger and meaner robots.
Created by a brilliant scientist named Tenma, Astro Boy is a young robot with super strength, x-ray vision, unbelievable speed and the ability to fly. When Tenma sends him away,
