If you liked Whicker's World you'll like him at war too
Alan Whicker presents the story of his war spent mostly in Italy in 1943-45. As a young officer in charge of a film unit, he takes us through modern-day Italy in colour, as he recovers his wartime tracks, with black-and-white film and still footage of the Italian Campaign, some of which he took himself.
We travel through Sicily and Anzio, through Rome and on to Milan. His wonderful mellow voice and innate modesty tell us not only the story of the Italian Campaign but also some delightful reminiscences that include, of course, stories of both courage and weakness, delight and sadness. He survived unscathed, many of his friends did not. If you are interested in travel, history, the Second World War, journalism, photography, film or Italy then watch this two-hour documentary. It was released on DVD in 2005.
He's a great broadcaster and how most of us would like to be in such good shape approaching 80! Alan Whicker became an octogenarian in June 2005. Raise a glass of Orvieto while you watch the film!
