Stephan Elliott is a multi-tasker. For most of his career, he has juggled both writing and directing duties and now, while on the phone with If, he is in the middle of sweeping his house.
If A Few Best Men seems like a change of pace, it isn't. Although the script was written by Dean Craig (Death at a Funeral), the film's producers gave the director the freedom to contribute his own rewrites.
"There's an awful lot of me in there," he says. "Dean took care of the English and I took care of the Australian."
Elliott first read the script after being persuaded by producer Gary Hamilton.
"I haven't read other people's scripts for years because I basically develop my own," he says. "So he kind of got me in an evil, manipulative way and talked me into reading it."
(For the record, Hamilton's dastardly attack plan involved seeing...

[Our thanks to Mathieu Li-Goyette of Panorama Cinema for the following interview.]
For the 14th edition of the Fantasia Film Festival, programmers had the great idea of bringing up Don Bluth and Gary Goldman to given them an honorary award and to speak about the future of traditional animation. We had the honor to meet them, the creative team behind such classics as The Secret of Nimh (1982), An American Tail (1986), The Land Before Time (1988), Stanley's Magic Garden (1994), Titan A.E. (2000), etc. For the occasion, a real history lesson on how animation evolved and what, in 1979, made them quit the Disney studios in search of a renaissance of the Golden Age of animation was given to us. An interview with the last milestones of commercial animation: two geniuses that still have kid's hearts.
Panorama-cinéma: So you are here in Fantasia to present The Land Before Time and to receive an honorary award.
Gary Goldman: It's what we've been told! (laughs)

Somewhere between Charlie Kaufman and Monty Python, Skeletons is a very odd, very British little film, made on a shoestring. Is this the way forward for domestic filmmaking?
On paper, it isn't exactly a recipe for success: a former stage actor directing his first feature, two not-particularly-photogenic stand-up comics as the leading men, very little budget to speak of, and a far-fetched plot involving divining people's innermost secrets via their wardrobes. But Skeletons could well be this year's Moon: a film few had heard of a couple of weeks ago, but has suddenly been catapulted into the spotlight by winning the Michael Powell prize for best new British feature film at the Edinburgh film festival.
"Frankly I'm slightly embarrassed that it means people will have to put my name and Michael Powell's name in the same sentence," says Nick Whitfield, the film's 42-year-old writer-director. The phones in Whitfield's Derbyshire...

The Alamo Guide
for April 29th, 2010
Surely you’ve heard the hubbub. Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau graced us with their presence at a sneak screening of Iron Man 2 on Tuesday (aka, raddest Tuesday ever!). You can read all about that Here, but fair warning, you might get a little jealous. Be comforted by the fact that I didn’t see Rdj either. What a handsome fellow…
No Time For Moping! We’ve got too much fun stuff to do. First of all, tickets for the Second Screening Of Weird Al Live In Person go on sale in less than 24 hours! Fact. Don’t miss the sale or there will be no Wheel of Fish for you! Also, Fantastic Fest 2008 favorite The Good, The Bad, And The Weird opens Friday at S. Lamar. This movie is pure fun, not to mention its gorgeous visuals (and a couple of the actors.

With the Hughes Brothers’ new film The Book Of Eli opening in theaters this Friday, January 15 we are all looking forward to this being a real kick-ass, post-apocalyptic action movie. One of many reasons we’re excited about this upcoming film, is the return of Gary Oldman as “the bad guy.” We have collectively decided that Gary Oldman is totally awesome, so this gave us an opportunity to compile our own Top Ten List of Gary Oldman’s Best Performances, and… there is certainly a large pool of quality options to choose from. Even if the movie sucks, Gary is always on top of his game.
Keep in mind this is merely the ten best Gary Oldman performances, as we see them. Truthfully, there may not be such a thing as a “bad” Gary Oldman performance.
10. Harry Potter (et al) as Sirius Black
It wouldn’t be much of a...
