Trailer for Yam Laranas' Patient X

23 September 2009 2:32 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Filipino director Yam Laranas is known for The Echo (Sigaw), and the English language remake of The Echo, which he directed himself, and while I haven't seen the original, I can say his remake is quite good.. well, except for the ending. Now he's back with Patient X which is a take on some Filipino folklore.

A film built around the legendary aswang - a creature from Filipino folklore that hunts human prey and feeds on their entrails.

The Echo (DVD Review)

18 September 2009 10:28 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

From the producers of The Ring and The Grudge comes, one of this years most suspenseful and chilling films, The Echo.  Seriously, I honestly approached this movie with some major skepticism as I do much of the wave of Asian/American remakes, but this one actually scared me in some scenes. The Echo is definitely worth a glance!

Max (Jesse Bradford) returns to his dead mom’s New York apartment after being released from prison.  As Max settles in, the mysteries behind his mother’s strange behavior leading up to her death begin to unravel.  Not only haunted by strange and grotesque apparitions, Max must also deal with the domestic violence going on next door, and neighbors who won’t help and want nothing to do with the ex-con.

This remake of the Philippine film Sigsaw, draws heavy influence from its Asian original, largely in part because Yam Laranas sat »

First teaser for Filipino folklore horror Patient X

3 September 2009 10:22 AM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Being that Patient X is writer/director Yam Laranas' sophmore feature after the atmospheric Sigaw there is some anticipation for it among followers of Filipino genre cinema (which has indeed been booming lately). I just watched the first teaser (via: Twitch) and, while truly just a tease, it does look to be just as atmospheric and nasty as the first.

Synopsis:

A film built around the legendary aswang - a creature from Filipino folklore that hunts human prey and feeds on their entrails.

Patient X star Richard Gutierrez and has only been filming for a few days apparently.

Teaser after the break.

First Teaser Arrives For Yam Laranas’ Patient X!

3 September 2009 9:29 AM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

You’ve got to say this:  They work fast in The Philippines.  Writer-director Yam Laranas - best known in these parts for atmospheric horror picture Sigaw - is still hard at work on his upcoming Patient X and already the first teaser has arrived.  He reunites here with his Sigaw star Richard Gutierrez for a film built around the legendary aswang - a creature from Filipino folklore that hunts human prey and feeds on their entrails.  This is very much a tease - loaded with images that must have just been shot in the past few days after they had to re-cast their lead actress for medical reasons - but a damn good one.  Check it below the break.

Yam Laranas Returns With Patient X *” Updated *

22 August 2009 11:49 AM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

[Post updated with five more stills]

With his English language debut The Echo soon to hit DVD in North America, Filipino director Yam Laranas is hard at work on his latest picture - a horror picture titled Patient X.  Now in production with an October release planned, this promises to be a full blooded, Filipino creature feature based around the legend of the aswang - a human-like creature that feeds upon the entrails of its victims. If all goes according to plan this will be very bloody and feature dominantly practical effects.  Though there’s no trailer available yet Laranas has just released a new poster and still shot, both of them featuring shots from the in-progress shoot.  And if you want to know why we love Laranas’ work so much, just take a look at these things.  The man is one of the best DPs working today and he brings an incredible visual sense to everything he does. »

Anchor Bay Entertainment has set an October 6 DVD street date for the remake of Children Of The Corn that debuts this fall on the Syfy channel. Fango managed to snag a first look at the cover art, which you can see below.

Written and directed by Donald P. Borchers (who produced the 1984 Children feature), the latest adaptation of the Stephen King short story premieres on Syfy Saturday, September 26 at 9 p.m. David Anders and Kandyse McClure star as Burt and Vicki, the couple whose road trip leads them into a remote town populated by religious-fanatic kids led by Malachai (Daniel Newman) and Isaac (Preston Bailey). (Orphan’s Isabelle Fuhrman apparently does a voice in the movie.) Full specs for the DVD, which retails for $26.97 ($18.99 Amazon as of this post), are coming soon.

New Stills from The Echo Remake

Though it's been completed for nearly two years now, there hasn't been a single peep about any release plans for Yam Larana's American redux of his own film The Echo. Thankfully all that silence hasn't stopped several stills from popping up online at the film's Facebook page!

The film, starring Jesse Bradford, Amelia Warner, Iza Calzado, Louise Linton, Carlos Leon, and Kevin Durand, centers around a young ex-con who moves into an old apartment building, only to learn his neighbor is an abusive police officer who savagely beats his wife and daughter. When the ex-con tries to intervene, he becomes trapped in a curse.

Check out the stills by clicking the image below, and then dig on the special promotional trailer we've included as well. Stay tuned for news regarding the film's release. As soon as we get it, you will too!

Promo Trailer: The Echo Remake

12 May 2009 11:17 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Get ready for an Asian horror remake that's as unconventional as can be, riddled with things we have never seen before! In The Echo we're just getting more unsuspecting people who put their noses where they shouldn't be and end up being fodder for a lingering curse! Nope. Nothing familiar about that plot at all!

The good news is at least the director of the original The Echo, Yam Larana, is back for the American redux starring Jesse Bradford, Amelia Warner, Iza Calzado, Louise Linton, Carlos Leon and Kevin Durand.

The plot centers around a young ex-con who moves into an old apartment building, only to learn his neighbor is an abusive police officer who savagely beats his wife and daughter. When the ex-con tries to intervene, he becomes trapped in a curse.

Dig on the trailer for the original and the new promo trailer below so you can compare notes. »

Yam Laranas’ The Echo Remake Gets a Korean Trailer

12 May 2009 11:02 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Yam Laranas shot his original horror movie “The Echo” in 2004 and finished up an American remake of the same movie in 2008. The film stars Jesse Bradford as an ex-con who moves into a haunted apartment building and begins to hear sounds. A longer, more plot-heavy (i.e. voiceover narration) version of the trailer was posted last year (see that here). This one is a Korean version of the trailer, and is a slicker, less obvious but definitely more atmospheric cut. The bathroom stall scene creeps me the hell out, man. An ex-con moves into an old apartment building, where he encounters a domestic problem involving a police officer, his wife, and their daughter. When he tries to intervene, however, a mysterious curse entraps him. Starring Jamie Bloch, Jesse Bradford, Iza Calzado, Kevin Durand, Jayne Eastwood, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Carlos Leon, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Amelia Warner, and Louise Linton. Yam Laranas directs. »
