‘The Karate Kid’ Trailer Goes Online

10 hours ago | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

I defy you to find an 80’s child who doesn’t recognize it when someone poses for the “Crane Kick.” The move was made legendary when it was used to win the “All Valley Karate Championship” at the end of 1984’s The Karate Kid. The film was the beginning of a franchise that became an institution for tons of teens during that decade, and now they’ve gone and remade it.

The reboot stars Jackie Chan as “Mr. Han” and Jaden Smith (The Day the Earth Stood Still and Will Smith’s son), as “Dre Parker.” It’s an updated story that takes the setting from Southern California to Beijing. Mr. Han will be teaching Dre karate (or maybe it will be kung-fu – most American audiences don’t know the difference) and putting him through workouts that might strain Jean Claude van Damme.

The movie also features Taraji P. Henson »

We got our first trailer for Ridley Scott’s “Robin Hood” last week and now Yahoo! released a new international trailer and it’s better than the first one.

The Decade’s Film: 2005-2009

21 December 2009 7:33 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

It had been a successful decade for the comic book movie, with that trend continuing into the latter half of the decade. Just as looked like the public demand for irradiated heroes looked to be diminishing, with lacklustre showings from the likes of Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four, out came Iron Man. Coupled with a brilliant script and an excellent performance from Robert Downey Jr as the titular zillionaire industrialist/playboy/freedom fighter/all-round genius, the end result was something truly special. Downey’s career was also revitalised, earning him a role in Tropic Thunder (which would earn him an Oscar nomination). Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk took a similar approach, this time giving Edward Norton of Fight Club fame a shot at getting under the skin of the green goliath.  They set a tough act to follow, but followed they were by one Christopher Nolan. First Two Trailers For ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’

17 December 2009 8:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

There are some pretty great, and some pretty awful movie titles out there. From something long like Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, some titles just don’t work. Luckily, a few good screenwriters feel the same way, and bring us Hot Tub Time Machine.

The premise sounds pretty much like bliss once you hear the names involved. Four guys decide to bond on a ski trip and party hard all night on Red Bull and Vodka. They continue the night in the house’s hot tub, which transports them to 1986, where hi-jinks then ensue.

The aforementioned names involved are John Cusack, Craig Robinson (The Office, Zach and Miri Make a Porno), Clark Duke (Sex Drive, Superbad), and Rob Corddry (What Happens in Vegas, Harold and Kumar 2). The film basically looks like The Hangover meets Back to the Future, with a little »

Should 'Avatar' Be Considered for Best Animated Oscar?

Zoe Saldana in Avatar

Photo: 20th Century Fox I'm not going to ask why Avatar isn't on the Academy's short list for Best Animated Oscar because the answer to that question is obvious... it wasn't submitted. Perhaps that's just the problem though. Why not? And don't go jumping to a quick decision. Let me give you a little food for thought. I might be able to make a case that will have you considering it much more than you may think.

First off, let's look at a few details to help the discussion along. Here are four of the 20 films that were submitted for consideration in the Best Animated Feature Film category: Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel Disney's A Christmas Carol Monsters vs. Aliens Up Keep those films in the back of your mind for a second while I ask (and try to answer) a few questions you may »

Aishwarya turns old and grey

Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan will be playing the role of an old lady in a few scenes in Vipul Shah's upcoming release, Action Replay. The film is said to be a remake of the Hollywood hit, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. The Bollywood version will star Akshay Kumar and Randhir Kapoor.

Well-known Hollywood make-up artist, Paul Pattison has been hard at work to give Ash a full makeover. He is known for styling Mel Gibson for Braveheart and Tom Cruise for Mission Impossible. Director, Vipul Shah says that Ash has to spend about 4-6 hours day for the make-up to be applied perfectly. "She was extremely co-operative. It's a look people have never seen her in before." he says.

The film has music composed by Pritam and is expected to be a family entertainer and not an action flick as the title implies. »

2009 in review: Film

12 December 2009 4:06 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Vampires were everywhere, Hollywood failed to excite, and British cinema ploughed a familiar furrow

The year began with the usual flurry of serious major movies given late December screenings in Los Angeles to qualify for the Oscars. They're now forgotten or vaguely regarded as semi-classics: The Reader, Che, Slumdog Millionaire, Frost/Nixon, Revolutionary Road, The Wrestler, Gran Torino, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

It soon became apparent that horror movies would be the dominant genre once again, with vampires the pre-eminent sub-species, the most profitable inevitably being New Moon, the latest in Stephenie Meyers's Twilight saga, the best the subtle Swedish Let the Right One In and the worst the British horror spoof Lesbian Vampire Killers.

Documentaries continued to flourish, introducing us to fascinating new worlds: Afghan TV talent shows (Afghan Star), Australian exploitation cinema (Not Quite Hollywood), haute couture (The September Issue). Animation thrived, the 3-D comeback threatened »

15 Semifinalists Announced for Visual Effects Oscar

11 December 2009 8:51 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

More Oscar shortlisting, this time the Visual Effects category. Last year, most of the fanboys wanted The Dark Knight to win, even though it's apparent upon repeat viewings that the best effect in that movie is Heath Ledger. The award went to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and rightly so. The movie is in essence one continuous effects shot. Much, much better and more necessary work than in The Dark Knight (check out our interview with winning VFX designer Eric Barba from Oscar week).

This year, the favorite has to be Avatar. In fact, even though I haven't seen it yet, I'm fairly certain the accomplishments of James Cameron and his team dwarf many of their competitors in the 15-film Academy contenders. These aren't the nominees, although five of them will be. This is the list of semi-finalists from which the visual effects community will pick the final five. »
