Sam Worthington has been rumoured to be up for the starring role in Universal’s long awaited remake of Flash Gordon according to reports. The rumour originally surfaced during the Christmas period that the “Terminator Salvation,” “Clash of the Titans” and “Avatar” star was up against none other than Ryan Reynolds for the part.

The remake, which was first announced back in May 2008, is the latest in a string of remakes by Universal and is written by scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The film is set to be directed by “The Crazies” helmer Breck Eisner.

The rumour first surfaced on HollyScoop, where “unnamed sources” tipped the Aussie actor for the part. According to HollyScoop:

Overture Films sent us this very cool movie still featuring Timothy Olyphant as David in the upcoming film “The Crazies”. The film is a reinvention loosely based upon the George Romero classic about the inhabitants of a small Iowa town beset by insanity and then death after a mysterious toxin contaminates their water supply.
