An Education leads Bafta longlists

First round of Bafta voting puts the Lone Scherfig film in the running for 17 awards, with Avatar, The Hurt Locker and District 9 following close behind
Lone Scherfig's An Education is officially the frontrunner for this year's British Academy film awards, following the publication of the Bafta longlists. Avatar, The Hurt Locker and – perhaps the biggest surprise – District 9 also emerged as strong contenders. And Moon looks like the main rival to An Education for the title of best British film.
The longlists are the result of the first round of Bafta voting, when the list of contenders is narrowed to 15 in each category. The second round, which closes 19 January and is announced two days later, whittles these down to the five nominees. The third round, of course, picks the winners, to be revealed on 21 February.
So many films are included in the longlists that they are very imprecise guides to the eventual victors.

2009 was a great year for going to the movies-regardless of if you were a 12 yr old girl, or an awkward man in your late 20's like myself. Long anticipated movies like Avatar, Where The Wild Things Are, and Fantastic Mr. Fox came and delivered strongly, along with some unexpected suprises like District 9 & The Brothers Bloom. I'm still beating myself up over a few films that I missed in the year: namely Moon (which Dave and Don swear by), Precious, The Road, and The Hurt Locker. But overall-this has been an awesome year for movies. I'm excited to see what the Acadmey Awards hold, as well as what is coming in 2010.
10. The Brothers Bloom
With The Brothers Bloom, Rian Johnson skillfully took the next step in his cinematic career. Leaning on the character development patterns he used in Brick, he also managed to inject humor and fun in this go round.

With the amount of big blockbusters there were this year – films full of explosions, magic spells and other worlds meticulously rendered onscreen – I’ve been looking forward to seeing which of those films will get recognition at the Oscars. And, in the only category you’re likely to see many of the summer ‘09 films in is undoubtedly the Best Visual Effects category, which in the past few years has included Transformers, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and Superman Returns.
The Academy of Motion Picture Art And Sciences has today announced the shortlist for Best Achievement in Visual Effects. The list has seven films on it, which will then be whittled down to three and those will be announced along with the rest of the nominees on February 2nd. Here are the seven films:
Avatar
District 9
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Star Trek
Terminator Salvation
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

This is a big category now and the Academy really needs to give some serious thought on expanding the nominees from 3 to 5. At a board meeting over the summer, they voted to expand the voting rights of the various branches due to the Academy’s ongoing retweeking of its rules. Visual Effects is one such category in desperate need of an adjustment. As of this year, Avatar, Star Trek are definitely in….anyone care to venture a guess on what will be the third? My own choice would be District 9.
From AMPAS:
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that seven films remain in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 82nd Academy Awards®.
The films are listed below in alphabetical order:
“Avatar”
“District 9”
“Harry Potter And The Half-blood Prince”
“Star Trek”
“Terminator Salvation”
“Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen”

Live in Los Angeles, the Jacob Black of "Twilight Saga" has been hailed Favorite Breakout Actor, triumphing over Chris Pine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sam Worthington and Zachary Quinto.
The Breakout title wasn't the only kudo the 17-year-old collected on the special night. According to USA Today, he also nailed the Favorite On-Screen Team title, which he shared with his "The Twilight Saga's New Moon" co-stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. They bested over "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" stars, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson.
Lautner's two awards gave "Twilight" a boost in terms of the kudos collection. With the additional counts from the actor, the popular vampire drama has led the fields with four kudos. In addition to Lautner's collection, the movie has won two other titles,

A bunch of films battle for a nomination in the best visual effects category at the Oscars. Here are the candidates...
The list of films competing for the three nomination spots in the Academy Awards' category for best visual effects has been narrowed down to seven. Fifteen flicks were in the running, but some of them got kicked out. Let's find out which ones are still in...
"Avatar," "District 9," "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," "Star Trek," "Terminator Salvation," "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and "2012" all have a shot at getting nominated Feb. 2, when we'll find out what films will be competing at the 82nd Academy Awards.
Out of the race are: "Angels & Demons," "Coraline," "Disney's A Christmas Carol," "G-Force," "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," "Sherlock Holmes," "Watchmen" and "Where the Wild Things Are."
I would have liked to see "Where the Wild Things Are" or "Watchmen" move on,

Seven movies - including Avatar - remain in the visual effects category of this year's Oscars.
In December, 15 contenders were announced and these were then whittled down. The others still in the running are: District 9, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Star Trek, Terminator Salvation, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and 2012.
Those that have been crossed off the list are: Angels & Demons, Coraline, Disney's A Christmas Carol, G-Force, G.I. Joe, Sherlock Holmes, Watchmen and Where The Wild Things Are.
On January 21, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will watch clips of all seven shortlisted movies before voting on the final three nominations.
Nominations will be announced on February 2 and the awards will be presented on March 7.
Personally, the best effects I saw were in Avatar, District 9, Star Trek and 2012. I'd be surprised if Avatar isn't the winner for its groundbreaking 3D CGI.

Are there really six other movies this year that can compete with the visuals of Avatar, which is clearly on a mission for world domination? According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, apparently so.
