Dawn of the Geeks: GeekWeek Rises

29 December 2009 4:36 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Horror, horror, horror. That's our bread and butter here at Dread Central and we Love It, but there are other facets of geekdom out there that we as horror fans also enjoy. Music. Video Games. Wrestling. Basically anything fun. What can I say? We know how to party! A new website has opened its doors with that in mind, and it's looking to be a pretty badass resource.

Producer Jeff Katz who has brought us lots of genre related projects such as Freddy Vs. Jason, Snakes on a Plane, and lots more has just unleashed his latest endeavor on an unsuspecting populace ...

The idea behind GeekWeek is very simple: one stop shopping.

"I believe that all of hardcore fandom - from comic books to sports - comes from basically the same place. None of these things are mutually exclusive. All of us ultimately have diverse and unique geek tastes." says Katz. »

Susan Sarandon And Tim Robbins' Split, 'Crazy Heart' And Stray Peacocks In Today's Twitter-Wood

23 December 2009 3:30 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Jeff Bridges' performance in "Crazy Heart" was good enough for the Golden Globes, and it was good enough for Rob Zombie as well, judging by his tweets. Kevin Smith, meanwhile, had a positively-used expletive to describe his own experience watching Edgar Wright's unreleased "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World."

Less giddy was producer Jeff Katz, who used a sports metaphor to express his reaction to news that Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins have split. I'll let you parse and interpret that one, as his references to Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno went a little over my head. You can do so after the jump where you will also learn about Ice-t's recent "Modern Warfare 2" accomplishments, when Emmy Rossum will begin taking trapeze lessons and who found a stray peacock in their back yard. It's all retweeted in Twitter-Wood report for December 23, 2009.

Download Samuel L. Jackson to Your iPhone

13 December 2009 6:30 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Three years ago, the big piece of Samuel L. Jackson technology was a voicemail you could send out encouraging people to see Snakes on a Plane. Jackson recorded a short message and who knows how many names that summer, and you'd pick a name and submit a phone number and presto: Personalized Sam Jackson voicemail.

He's stepped it up for 2009/2010, releasing his own iPhone soundboard app, which also works for an iPod Touch. It's Sam Jackson quotes and advice for any occasion, presumably delivered with a hint of Jules Winnfield. And, because it can't be known as anything else, the new app is called iSamJackson.

According to Geeks of Doom, "The soundboard is fully customizable, includes a personality scanner and an “Ask Sam” feature that allows users to seek instantaneous advice from the world’s most badass living individual."

Personally, I'd rather have the wallet from Pulp Fiction or Christina Ricci chained to my radiator, »

Aussie horror Dying Breed: Blu-ray Review

8 December 2009 10:04 AM, PST | 24framespersecond.net | See recent 24FramesPerSecond news »

Director: Jody Dwyer. Review: Adam Wing. It’s Australia’s turn to get down under your skin with Jody Dwyer’s twisted vision of terror, The Hills Have Eyes has a lot to answer for, and Dying Breed proves once again that keeping it in the family is rarely a good thing in the world of horror. Convinced that Tasmanian tigers still exist, and determined to finish the work that her sister started, zoologist Nina (Mirrah Foulkes) sets off on an expedition with her partner Matt, their financier Jack and his girlfriend, Rebecca. An interesting array of characters, not to mention wilfully annoying, between them they have also starred in the likes of Wolf Creek, Snakes On A Plane and Saw. Not exactly strangers to the world of torment and torture then… Their quest leads them deep into isolated territory, which is now inhabited by the descendants of Alexander Pearce »

The World Cup, Umaga And 'New Moon' Nevernudes In Today's Twitter-Wood

4 December 2009 3:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Professional wrestling fans of Twitter-Wood turned out today with good vibes for former WWE star Umaga, who was reported to be in serious condition for unknown reasons at a Houston hospital today. Jeff Katz was among them, and I echo his sentiments.

Elsewhere in the Twitterverse, Edgar Wright finished up his director's cut of "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World." Jason Reitman thanked him for not competing with "Up in the Air," and writer Bryan Lee O'Malley congratulated him on the milestone. Director Kyle Newman was somewhat less congratulatory, meanwhile, in his tweet-outs to England looking ahead to the World Cup. Check out those tweets after the jump along with Kat Dennings' nevernude diagnosis of the "New Moon" werewolves, an "Eclipse" actor hanging out with David Caruso and much more in the Twitter-Wood report for December 4, 2009.

Early Thoughts on Piranha 3D

25 November 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Alexandre Aja.s Piranha 3-D marks a fierce return to form after the director.s lackluster Mirrors . Curiously, the Frenchman.s latest brings to mind a pair of creature features with Samuel L. Jackson: Snakes on a Plane and Deep Blue Sea . It succeeds as the over-the-top spectacle SoaP was hyped to be, and feels in many ways like the Deep Blue Sea sequel that never happened. Currently scheduled to open on April 16 next year, a rough cut of the horror-comedy screened last night in New Jersey (a fitting location, considering all the spray-tanned spring breakers we watch die by the boatload in this remake), sans 3D, with temporary effects, and music cues culled from The Dark Knight and 28 Days Later . Weekend Box Office: 'New Moon' Lives Up to the Hype

23 November 2009 6:02 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Sometimes a movie will consume the internet for weeks before its release, and then turn out to be Snakes on a Plane. This is not one of those times. New Moon didn't set the all time opening weekend box office record, but it came uncomfortably close, and -- holy crap -- it now owns the record for the highest single-day gross ever, a $72 million Friday. Twilight opened to almost precisely half of New Moon's $140 million number, and went on to gross $192 million. The sequel should pass that mark by next weekend.

New Moon's staying power is a bit difficult to forecast. On one hand, its grosses may be frontloaded, as is typical when rabid fans of the source material rush out to pack midnight and opening-day showings. On the other, this might just be the kind of film that, even more so than its predecessor, generates repeat business. »

Film: Review:Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans

19 November 2009 12:05 PM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Not since Snakes On A Plane has the line between movie and Internet meme been as confused as it is with Werner Herzog and Nicolas Cage’s remake of the Abel Ferrara shocker Bad Lieutenant. When the project was first announced at Cannes, it immediately triggered reaction along the lines of “What kind of crazy train wreck is that going to be?” And once the wondrously insane teaser trailer went viral, it turned into, “Oh, that kind of a crazy train wreck.” So what about the movie? Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans—the subtitle makes it charmingly unwieldy »

Ken Ober, The 'New Moon' Red Carpet And Neil Patrick Harris In Today's Twitter-Wood

17 November 2009 3:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Last night got busy in Twitter-Wood on a few fronts. Former "Remote Control" host Ken Ober's passing surprised a number of tweeters, including Brian Posehn and Jeff Katz, who both noted his loss.

L.A.'s Westwood village theatre, meanwhile, was epicenter for all of the "Twilight" Twitterverse during the "New Moon" premiere. BooBoo Stewart posted a pic from the red carpet, Rachelle Lefevre posted her reasons for missing the event, Brett Ratner was in attendance and Kevin Smith made a date out of the night with his daughter. You can check out what they had to say after the jump along with Twitter Pic pick that I selected more for its significance than its shock value, as Neil Patrick Harris officially moved into the Twitter-Wood neighborhood. It's all in the report for November 17, 2009.

Review: Women in Trouble

14 November 2009 6:02 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

By Jette Kernion (reprint from 3/17/09 -- SXSW Film Festival)

I'm wary of movies that try to be instant cult/camp classics, with intentionally overdone dialogue and outrageous costumes and actors who are metaphorically winking or even non-metaphorically mugging for the camera. When the characters are in on the joke, it isn't all that funny. And when I learned that the writer-director of Women in Trouble also co-wrote Snakes on a Plane, I grew even more skeptical. But the actresses who populate Women in Trouble tend to play it straight, even when they're wearing assless spandex pants or smoking invisible cigarettes, and that's what keeps this film fun instead of tiresome.

Women in Trouble has a multi-story, anthology-like structure. Writer/director Sebastian Gutierrez said before the SXSW screening that he originally had one ten-page sequence that he wanted to shoot, then thought it might be easy to shoot several of them, »

Film: Review:Women In Trouble

12 November 2009 12:07 PM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

In early 2009, the “everything-is-connected” movie finally hit bottom when its chief architect, writer Guillermo Arriaga (21 Grams, Babel), made his directorial debut with The Burning Plain, a film that epitomized the dirge-like self-importance of the worst cinematic puzzles. The best thing about Women In Trouble—another everything-is-connected feature from a screenwriter, this time Gothika and Snakes On A Plane scribe Sebastian Gutierrez—is that it isn’t a Guillermo Arriaga film. It isn’t about violence, abuse, racial identity, masochism, guilt, or any other themes piled onto the audience’s conscience like weights on the barbell in Unbreakable. Instead »

Veteran's Day, 'Precious' And 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' In Today's Twitter-Wood

11 November 2009 3:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Veteran's Day brought no shortage of veteran appreciation today in Twitter-Wood, prompting thanks and memories from across the board, as well as a personal note from "Twilight" actor Gil Birmingham.

Meanwhile, Jason Schwartzman's on his way to the NYC debut of "Fantastic Mr. Fox," which as a Wes Anderson follower, I am anxious to see myself this weekend. Another new release, "Precious," really got a hold of Tyrese Gibson, who said the film's been keeping him awake. Check out their thoughts along with pictures from Peter Facinelli and John Stamos and a Henry Winkler autograph to be jealous of after the jump. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for November 11, 2009.

'Assassin's Creed Lineage' Live Action Trailer

19 October 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | MTV Multiplayer | See recent MTV Multiplayer news »

"Assassin's Creed 2" is right around the corner, and as a means of drumming up interest about the franchise, Ubisoft went ahead and commissioned a series of live action short films set in the game's universe.

I actually went up to Ubisoft Montreal to check out the production, as well as learn a bit more about the game, and they weren't kidding around with this one. Apart from having director, full cast and period-accurate costumes, Ubisoft gave the visual effects work to Hybride (which is actually part of Ubisoft). You'd know Hybride for their work on the visual effects in flicks like "Sin City" and "Snakes On A Plane."

Remember that the entire film was shot on a green screen set, so whenever you see, well, anything that's not an actor or prop (like all the sets), it wasn't really there. Kinda staggering when you think about it.

Moyer and Paquin’s new project…together…again

15 October 2009 6:42 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

On and offscreen couple Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer will no doubt glamour True Blood fans into viewing their new project Open House, a thriller that according to Dread Central is about a young and wealthy couple hosting an open house to sell off their estate only to find that one of their guests never left. The cast is said to feature, amongst others, Tricia Helfer (BattleStar Galactica), Rachel Blanchard (Snakes on a Plane) and Brian Geraghty (The Hurt Locker). Directing the movie is non other than Anna's brother Andrew who lacks experience as a director with only a few credits to his name, but has been a producer since 2002 according to IMDb. The Canadian siblings run a production house together called Paquin Films, which produced two movies so far: Blue State and Something Beneath. Cobra Starship's Gabe Saporta Rants About Immigration On Twitter

6 October 2009 10:16 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

One of the great double-edged swords in the life of a big-time rock band is international travel. Sure, if you get to a certain point in your popularity, you could visit exotic locales, eat excellent food and meet interesting people. On the other hand, it's likely you'll really only see Rome, Frankfurt and Dublin from the windows of your bus or your hotel room. A little sympathy is necessary when you consider the sort of schedule most of these bands maintain on the road (especially in a foreign country), which is why Cobra Starship frontman Gabe Saporta can be forgiven for having a bit of a meltdown on Twitter earlier today.

The string of tweets (over three dozen in total) began when Saporta responded to a news story about how clothing retailer American Apparel was forced to fire all of their undocumented workers, most of whom were illegal immigrants. "Sorry »

Weekend Report: 'Zombieland' Livens Up Horror Comedy Genre

5 October 2009 2:14 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

The moribund horror comedy sub-genre showed a glimmer of vitality with the ripsnorting debut of Zombieland, which yanked $24.7 million out of around 3,900 screens at 3,036 sites. Despite Zombieland and the continued strength of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and the Toy Story franchise, though, overall weekend business was off six percent from the same period last year, when Beverly Hills Chihuahua ruled, and on the low end for the timeframe.

In the realm of zombie movies, Zombieland had the second highest-grossing start on record behind the Dawn of the Dead remake, but, more importantly, it was the first horror comedy in recent memory to find significant theatrical success. The only horror comedies to claim greater initial attendance in the past two decades were the Scary Movie pictures, but they primarily appealed as spoofs. Failure is the norm, with movies like Jennifer's Body and Snakes on a Plane among the corpses. »

Open Forum Friday: Should Comedy and Horror Ever Mix?

2 October 2009 3:04 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

There once was a time when comedy and horror were successful and entertaining bedfellows. During the '80s, movies like Gremlins and Ghostbusters mixed the two genres to create major blockbuster hits, and some of the bigger horror movie franchises at the time also incorporated more and more humour as time went on. Throughout the '90s, each of the Scream movies made over $150 million worldwide. In general, it seemed like people had no problem experiencing both laughter and scares during the course of the same film. Fast-forward to today, and sadly it seems that just about any combination of comedy and horror on the big screen is now met with box office disappointment. What's the deal? Technically speaking, I can see that, in a sense, comedy is the complete opposite of horror. You can't be immersed in fear and suspense when a movie is constantly goofing around and making self-referential jokes. »

Box office preview: 'Zombieland' to dominate

1 October 2009 3:48 PM, PDT | EW - Hollywood Insider.com | See recent EW.com - Hollywood Insider news »

Horror comedies have been a mixed bag at the box office. You have the good: Ghostbusters and the Scary Movie franchise. You have the bad: Snakes on a Plane and Eight-Legged Freaks. And then you have the ugly: Jennifer's Body and Club Dread. In the case of this weekend, Zombieland seems destined to join the good. The film -- starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin as the last four humans stuck on a zombie-invested planet -- has been generating incredible buzz and is sure to win the weekend.
