Thor release date gets moved up

1 hour ago | GordonandtheWhale | See recent GordonandtheWhale news »

Schedules are being shuffled around for the summer of 2011 and it’s all because of Spider-man 4. The movie, which was scheduled to be released on May 6, 2011, hit a little snag in its production. It was announced yesterday that Sam Raimi and Sony are at odds over some aspects of the script (it looks like Raimi wants to fix what’s wrong with the franchise, while Sony wants to make Spider-man 3 again), putting in question whether the May 6th deadline will be met.

Thor Hammers Spider-Man 4 For Release Date

8 hours ago | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

My most anticipated Marvel Studios movie Thor is making the move to be the opening hit of the blockbuster summer season of 2011. As we reported last month and confirmed this morning, there are issues behind the scenes with Spider-Man 4 involving a dispute between Sony and director Sam Raimi about what villains the story should feature.

It seems almost a sure thing now that Spider-Man 4 will be delayed but to what extent the seriousness of the issues at Sony for that production, we have yet to find out.

An old Screen Rant writer and friend of ours Jamie Williams pointed me to the info at BoxOfficeMojo which lists release date changes for upcoming flicks. It shows that Thor has moved from its May 20th slot to Spider-Man’s May 5th slot. Both productions of course involve Marvel so this wasn’t done by accident and they wanted to make »

Brian Michael Bendis says he can fix Spider-Man 4, Sam Raimi to bow out

9 hours ago | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

With the screenplay for Spider-Man 4 reported to be in a mess, comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis reckons he is the right man to untangle the web and craft a workable story.

At present, the film's director Sam Raimi is said to hate the script and a fourth writer - Alvin Sargent - has been brought on board to knock it into shape.

Bendis (pictured) said on Twitter that he knows how to fix the story. He also agrees with Sony's idea to make the movie 3D.

The scribe tweeted: "For those who asked, of course I would and could write Spidey 4 in a heartbeat. I know exactly what that movie should be - and it should be 3D."

Bendis has had a long association with the webspinning superhero. He launched the Ultimate Spider-Man comic book series in 2001 and is still its writer.

In addition, he was co-executive producer »

'Spider-Man 4' caught in villainous web of script delays

19 hours ago | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Damn you, "Spider-Man" villains and your interfering ways.

The fourth installment of the Marvel hero franchise was supposed to start production in spring, but that's been delayed due to an epic fight between Sony and director Sam Raimi about which criminal our webslinging hero should battle next, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Raimi, who fought to have the Vulture join Sandman in "Spider-Man 3" and lost, wants to go big on the Vulture this time around, whereas the studio would like to mix up Spider-Man's (Tobey Maguire) love life with a romance with a burglar known as the Black Cat and add another villain to be determined.

The road to "Spider-Man 4" has been fraught with peril and script rewrites, trying to meld the two visions. So far, James Vanderbilt, David Lindsay-Abaire, Gary Ross and Alvin Sargent have taken a shot at the story.

It's a tad premature to worry, »

Confirmed: Spider-Man 4 Delayed [Updated]

21 hours ago | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

My Spidey sense is telling me there’s a chance we won’t be getting a quality film in Spider-Man 4. How can we after what we saw from Spider-Man 3 which was plagued with too many characters, sub-par writing and apparent studio interference which forced a major character into a movie where he didn’t belong, right?

Well, things were looking good for the fourth installment however, where director Sam Raimi would again helm, promising that this time he would be in “full control” of the movie unlike last time around. When he said that, he should have clarified that he wouldn’t actually have much control at all… because he doesn’t.

Just prior to the holidays, our friends at IESB had the exclusive scoop on the startling news that there are issues behind the scenes involving a dispute over what villain(s) should appear in the film »

Production on ‘Spider-Man 4′ grinds to a halt

21 hours ago | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Apparently one can keep a good spider down.

Movement on Spider-Man 4 has been put on hiatus (and on notice!) over a reported dispute over the script.

Because of the halt, Spidey 4 may miss its May 5, 2011 release date over a tussle between director Sam Raimi and Sony Pictures regarding the story. A story that has seemingly gone through never-ending drafts, rewrites and edits. The rumor going around is that Raimi is pushing for Vulture to appear as the villain and to have him played by Oscar-winner John Malkovich. Sony has balked.

There is also talk that Anne Hathaway may play the daughter of Vulture. (I support it. Any Anne Hathaway is fine with me.)

For those wondering, Spider-Man 3 took around 18 months from production to release. Using history as a gauge, production on Spider-Man 4 will need to move forward pretty soon. “I think making May is a real question, »

Script Squabbles Delay Spider-Man 4

23 hours ago | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

The latest installment of the famous Marvel comic and blockbusting franchise Spider-Man 4 is facing difficulties as Sony and director Sam Raimi are at loggerheads over the direction of the film, according to industry organ The Hollywood Reporter .

Having shoehorned two villains into the clumsy plot for Spider-Man 3, it's the baddies who are causing the crisis yet again: Raimi, who was disappointed with the direction of the last film and ashamed of its critical/fanboy reception, wants to leave the series on a high with a scary criminal called Vulture and not Black Cat, the romantic and more marketable antagonist Sony is demanding.

So far a list of formidable script-writers have unsuccessfully tried their hands at reconciling the two opposing views. They include the Pulitzer Prize-winner David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole) and Oscar-nominated Gary Ross (Seabiscuit); Alvin Sargent, famous for dramas such as Paper Moon and Ordinary People is now »

'Hobbit' Starts (Soon), 'Spider-Man 4' Stops (Now) and 'Deadpool' Gets Written

6 January 2010 12:00 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

In headline order, we'll start this fantasy film update with a Twitter message from Production Weekly regarding Guillermo del Toro's The Hobbit that reads as follows: Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of Jrr Tolkien's "The Hobbit" is due to begin a 14 month production schedule this June in New Zealand. Recently Spoiler TV posted a casting breakdown for the film as we are still without a Bilbo Baggins, the role played by Ian Holm in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. Holm, obviously won't fit the age requirements of the younger Bilbo as the casting is looking for someone between 25-35 years-old. Several names including Tobey Maguire and James McAvoy have been rumored for the role, but all have proven false so we will have to just sit and wait.

Speaking of Tobey Maguire, he won't have to worry about putting those webbed tights on any time soon »

Yes People, Spider-Man 4 Is Delayed

5 January 2010 11:17 PM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Things are not well over in Sony Towers, following on from the rumours last month that Spider-Man 4 had been put on hold (rumours which Sony vehemently denied) it now seems that it has in fact been confirmed that Spider-Man 4 is on hold due to differences between the studio and director Sam Raimi.

The problem has arose because Raimi is hoping to have The Vulture as the film’s primary villain while Sony bigwigs are dead against the choice and are also hoping to crowbar The Black Cat in there for an additional love interest (Gwen Stacey: Spider-Man 3 anyone?). Personally, since we’ve already covered this story, none of this comes as a huge surprise. Yes, Sony denied it back in December, however it seems that THR have now confirmed the rumour and that’s pretty much all there is to it, this from THR:

Spider-Man 4 Officially Delayed

5 January 2010 10:52 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Spider-Man always has problems with villains, but now it looks like the film franchise built around him is having real trouble getting them right to everyone's satisfaction for Spider-Man 4.Back in December, IESB floated a rumour (quickly denied by Sony) that script issues and disagreements on the focus of the movie between Sam Raimi and the studio would mean pushing the shoot back to later next year. But now the delay has been confirmed, with the main sticking point being Raimi's commitment to using John Mallkovich as The Vulture for the main villain (according to the Heat Vision Blog, he wanted the brainy, beaky baddie in Spider-Man 3 before the producers pushed the idea of Venom) and Sony preferring a version of Felicia Hardy, Aka Black Cat alongside another, more marketable opponent. All this has led to multiple script drafts - nothing unusual on such a tentpole project, but »

Spider-Man 4 on Hold, May Miss May 2011 Date

5 January 2010 9:34 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Last month, IESB reported a rumor that Spider-Man 4 had been put on hold indefinitely due to disputes between director Sam Raimi and Sony over the script, specifically which villains would be featured in the sequel.

The trades and Nikki Finke have confirmed the report, saying the holiday hiatus is extending indefinitely while the story details are hashed out.  Raimi “hated” the current version of the script and is pushing for the Vulture as the villain (possibly played by John Malkovich).  No less than three screenwriters have tried their hand at the script, which still remains incomplete.  Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 writer Alvin Sargent has been brought in for a new draft.

Finke confirms that Malkovich is still up for the baddie, but the attached Anne Hathaway and her possible Vulturess angle may both be scrapped.  Sony continues to hint at the use of 3-D, especially following the success of Avatar. »

Sony Postpones 2011 Release Date for Spider-man 4

5 January 2010 7:36 PM, PST | FusedFilm | See recent FusedFilm news »

Back in early December there was a story about Spider-man 4 possibly being postponed or on delay due to disagreement over the villain. Now a pretty substantial source is reporting its delay.

Deadline Hollywood Daily is reporting that Spider-Man 4 no longer has a firm start date and that it was “unlikely” that the film will be ready for its planned May 11, 2011 release date, according to one of the site’s insider’s at Sony.

“It is unlikely that May 11, 2011, date will be made,” a Sony insider just told me today. “It depends on how quickly the script can get in.”

The site was also reporting that they had gotten a hold of an email sent to the visual effects team working on the film that indicated Sam Raimi was having issues with the story that were being tended to, which was why the production was put on hold.

'Spider-Man 4' Still on Hold, Won't Make May 2011 Release?

5 January 2010 2:10 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Shortly before the holidays, IESB reported that production on Spider-Man 4 had grounded to a halt due to problems with the story. Essentially, Sam Raimi wants Vulture to be the main baddie in the sequel, but Sony wants any villain but Vulture. Not long after that news broke -- along with word that the title being used in-house was Spider-M4N -- MTV spoke with Sony who blasted the rumor and claimed production offices were closed because of the holidays.

Well, the holidays are over now ... so that means the production offices are back open, right? Wrong ... according to Nikki Finke over at Deadline Hollywood. Without crediting IESB (though Nikki never credits anyone, so that's not a shocker), she says (via her own sources) that production is most certainly being pushed back and there's a very good chance part four won't make its original release date of May 11, 2011, which is »

Spider-Man 4 delayed over script clashes

The latest "Spider-Man" sequel is proving villainously difficult to plot out.Sony and director Sam Raimi are at loggerheads over which direction to go with the villains for the latest installment -- an impasse that has prompted the studio to delay its scheduled spring production start and potentially to bump the picture from its May 11, 2011 release slot.Raimi wants to have a criminal known as the Vulture act as the primary antagonist in the film while the studio, which dislikes the idea of the winged wrongdoer, is pushing for a romantic sub-plot involving a burglar named the Black Cat in addition to another villain.A succession of writers has tried to marry the two parties' differing visions to no effect.Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire ("Rabbit Hole") was hired in October 2008 to pen a key version of the screenplay, on top of the earlier version penned »

Blu-ray Capsule Review: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

5 January 2010 3:22 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs Quick Thoughts: This little animated film managed an 85% at RottenTomatoes and earned over $124 million at the domestic box-office. So, when the Blu-ray arrived I was interested in seeing what kept audiences heading out to theaters to check it out. Unfortunately, even while I was led to believe directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord were on to something in the opening moments, this 81 minute movie actually proves to be about 20 minutes too long. It's redundant and monotonous and by the time it was wrapping itself up it seemed it would never end. Visually it's a treat, but beyond picking it up to occupy the kiddies on occasion, I just can't recommend it even though I loved Mr. T as the town cop Earl Devereaux. But who doesn't love Mr. T?

Supplements: While I didn't particularly enjoy the film there are some decent features including an »

Further Script Delays Leave 'Spider-Man 4' Hanging

4 January 2010 9:50 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Prior to Christmas, we reported that Spider-Man 4 was facing suspension due to problems with the story; specifically over which villains to incorporate, with Raimi wanting to use The Lizard, and Sony heads wanting whatever character is popular in the 'Spider-Man' comics right now.

It seems as though the rumors were true. According to Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood blog and confirmed by Variety) the schedule for the film has been pushed back. Finke quoted from an e-mail that was allegedly sent out to the visual-effects crew on Dec. 11:

Hey there--

We were just notified that our schedule is pushing. We will Not be starting as planned. I'm terribly sorry for this news, and I hope this email reaches you in time to find other options. We do not know how long we are pushing, and we will not know until mid-January. By mid-January, we will be told how long the push is, »

Marvel Pres: 'Thor's' a Game-Changer

4 January 2010 9:15 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

So it sounds like Thor and his fellow Asgardians have started their screen tests, and there’s at least one person who likes what he sees.

Of course, that person would be Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, but he might be a little biased. In a retrospective on Marvel-based films posted at Marvel.com, Feige claimed the garbed Asgardians in Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming adaptation set a bold new standard in comic book movies unseen since, well, 2000’s Marvel-based X-Men.

"To be honest the thing that I'm most excited about right now though, is the screen test we just finished for 'Thor'," Feige states toward the end of the article. "We've done some costume tests and watching the Asgardians walk onto the sound stage takes me back to that first time I saw the X-Men on the set all together in Toronto. Only it was unlike anything we've ever put on film before! »

"Avatar" Overtakes "The Dark Knight"

3 January 2010 8:21 PM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

After just 17 days, James Cameron’s "Avatar" has crossed $1 billion at the global box office and moving ahead of last year's juggernaut "The Dark Knight" which was the previous #4.

In fact if numbers continue along estimates, the film is expected to pass "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" to become second-biggest worldwide release of all time behind only Cameron's "Titanic".

How big is this phenomenon? Domestically Cameron's film took in $68.3 million in its third weekend, easily beating the previous record of a third weekend gross of $45 million garnered by "Spider-Man 3".

At the U.S. box-office it has made $352 million so far, the second-largest grossing film of 2009. It's expected to pass the $402 million that "Transformers Revenge of the Fallen" earned by the weekend - achieving in three weeks what took 'Fallen' nearly four months to achieve.
