- Laura Elliott's quiet life in the wilderness of Desolation Sound is shattered when her old friend, Elizabeth, comes to visit. Laura learns that her husband has been having an affair with Elizabeth, and soon after, Elizabeth's car is found at the bottom of a cliff. As the police investigate, life changes for everyone involved.—Mark Hoger
- Someone unintentionally murders someone and buries the body in the backyard. With the aid of a friend--a nutty artist who likes to add human hair to his sculptures (akin to the "bultos" crafted by 18th-century Mesoamerican Catholics)--they stage what looks like a car-skidded-off-the-road-into-the-lake situation to fool the not-so-easily-fooled sheriff. There are some minimalist romances here and there. Ultimately, the murder is unsolved, even though the sheriff knows that she knows that he knows that she knows that etc.
