[DVD Review] A Thousand Years of Good Prayers/The Princess of Nebraska

27 May 2009 11:55 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Director Wayne Wang, best known for his adaptation of Amy Tan’s celebrated novel The Joy Luck Club, has kept himself at the forefront of Asian-oriented filmmakers even while making a variety of crowd-pleasing commercial films (Maid in Manhattan, Last Holiday). This collection of two of his latest films, both low-budget works shot on HD, is a great way to get acquainted with a unique filmmaker of considerable skill. Although the films vary in quality of both filmmaking and performance, there is no denying both pose interesting questions about Chinese or general Asian identity and their place in and outside of China.

The stronger of the two films, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, is a meticulous study of character. In the film, an aging Mr. Shi travels to America to visit his daughter Yilan, recently estranged form her husband. Mr. Shi is played by Henry O, until now relegated »

Queen Latifah Is Just Wright

27 March 2009 2:05 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Queen Latifah has signed on to star in a new rom-com called Just Wright, which we're guessing is a play on the idea of Mr Right. Yup, we're going all out on a limb there. The story's described as a modern-day Cinderella tale, which sees Latifah play a physical therapist who falls in love with a professional basketball player while she's helping him recover from a career-threatening injury. It's Latifah's second rom-com after Last Holiday (which we secretly quite liked, but don't tell anyone). The film started life at Disney years ago, but was put in turnaround and picked up by Fox Searchlight. There's no word on other casting or a director yet, but expect an announcement on that soon since filming is due to start in late May. »

Queen Latifah Joins 'Just Wright'

27 March 2009 1:53 AM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Queen Latifah will star in a modern-day Cinderella tale movie entitled "Just Wright". The Dakota Fanning's co-star in "The Secret Life of Bees" is set to play a female physical therapist who falls in love with a basketball player while helping him recover from a career-threatening injury.

Joining the film's production as its leading lady marks Latifah's second time landing a starring role in a romantic comedy following her role as Georgia Byrd in 2006 "Last Holiday". Aside from toplining the project, the Grammy-winning rapper will also produce the movie under her Flavor Unit banner alongside Shakim Compere and Debra Martin Chase.

"Just Wright" actually has been set up six years ago at Disney. However, the project was shelved before being put into turnaround and then picked up by Fox Searchlight. The movie is yet to have any director or other cast members attached. Still, Searchlight reportedly eye to start the principal photography in May. »

Queen Latifah Stretches The Definition Of Cinderella

27 March 2009 12:12 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Queen Latifah is set to star in a modern Cinderella tale, though if she's starring maybe we're stretching the definition of "Cinderella tale" a bit too far? I'm fairly certain Cinderella doesn't have much in common with a single, middle-aged, physical therapist, which is what Latifah will play in Just Wright. Fox Searchlight has Latifah's character falling in love with a basketball player while helping him recover from a career-threatening injury. So I guess instead of a slipper she's going to drop a colostomy bag or something. Sounds pretty romantic. This will be Queen's second venture into the world of rom-com. Her first was Last Holiday, a movie which for credibility's sake I'm probably supposed to hate, if only for the scene pictured in the image I posted with this story. For some weird reason I can't bring myself to loathe it. I'm a big softie. »

Boiling Point: Medical Miracles!

I know it's not the right season to be all Scrooge like and poo poo on miracles, which is why I'm not going to be talking about Last Holiday (ok technically she wasn't even sick) or some Patch Adams crap or things like that.  I'm just going to aim at »

Queen Latifah's Jewelry Stolen While On Vacation

1 January 2009 5:12 AM, PST | icelebz.com | See recent iCelebz news »

Queen Latifah, star of movies such as "The Secret Life of Bees" and "Last Holiday," didn't have a very good holiday on the Caribbean island of Tobago. While staying at the luxurious island resort, jewelry was stolen from her villa.

E! News is reporting that the Oscar-nominated, Grammy-winning star had thousands of dollars worth of baubles taken from her luxury villa where she was staying during the Christmas holidays.

A staff member at Stone Haven Villas, a resort in Black Rock, Tobago, said Latifah had been staying in a three-bedroom villa with a family member. The items taken did not belong to the actress, but to her companion.

Latifah, whose real name is Dana Owens, checked into Stone Haven under the fake name Cynthia Hadden. Despite her desire to stay anonymous, management at Stone Haven threw Latifah a private barbecue brunch. Upon returning to her villa she discovered the jewelry was missing. »
