Duncan Jones to Direct Source Code Starring Jake Gyllenhaal

17 minutes ago | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

A lot of people still haven't had a chance to see Duncan Jones' Moon, the indie sci-fi film starring Sam Rockwell, but from all the positive reviews [1], it's clear that critics are marking this as the arrival of an exciting and talented new director. The movie hits DVD [2] on January 12th, but in the meantime Jones has started to line up a number of new projects. A WWII submarine thriller called Escape From The Deep, and another science-fiction film called Mute had been previously announced, but now it looks like something else will take priority over both of those projects. Variety [3] reports that Jones has signed on to direct Source Code, a sci-fi thriller about a soldier who wakes up inhabiting the body of a stranger. He must relive a train bombing over and over again until he can find out who is responsible. Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to star, »

Helen Mirren joins Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman in Red

Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren has joined the cast of Red, the film adaptation of the comic book miniseries written by Warren Ellis and published by Wildstorm.

The movie, starring Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman, begins filming on January 11 and is set for release on November 19, 2010, with Robert Schwentke (Flightplan, The Time Traveler's Wife) directing.

Willis will be playing retired CIA agent Paul Moses who is targeted by assassins sent by the new leader of the CIA (Freeman) who wants to dispose of former agents who know too much.

Mirren, 64, whose casting was revealed by ScreenDaily and is now confirmed by Variety, is speculated to be playing the previous CIA boss who has stayed in touch with Moses.

In addition, John C. Reilly (The Aviator, Gangs of New York) and Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds, Angels in America, The West Wing) are in talks to join the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. »

Reilly, Parker, and Mirren Join ‘Red’

5 November 2009 4:54 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

John C. Reilly, Mary-Louise Parker (”Weeds”), and Oscar winner Helen Mirren have joined the cast of Red, an espionage thriller at Summit Entertainment.  The three join Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman already on board.

“Red” is a three-issue comic book miniseries centered on a former black ops CIA agent living a quiet life of seclusion.  His only contact with the outside world is with his former government handler and letters to his niece.  When a newly appointed Director of the CIA learns of his existence, he orders an assassination on the retired agent by a team of his best killers.

The Heat Vision Blog reports Reilly will play a retired agent who is paranoid everyone is out to kill him.  The beautiful Parker is Willis’ love interest, a federal pension worker who becomes mixed up in his struggle to stay alive.  Mirren will play an “associate of Willis with a lethal set of skills. »

John C. Reilly and Mary-Louise Parker Join Cast of Red

5 November 2009 8:15 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Earlier this week, Helen Mirren officially joined the cast of the upcoming movie adaptation of the graphic novel Red. She took her place alongside a cast that already includes Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter writes that John C. Reilly and Mary-Louise Parker have signed on as the newest additions.

The story of Red was written by noted author Warren Ellis and illustrated by Cully Hamner. It focuses on a menial clerk, Paul Moses (Willis), who is actually a CIA operative with a long history of killing enemies of the state. He must come out of retirement when the new CIA director (Freeman) discovers his past and orders his death. Mirren is rumored for the part of Moses' former boss, although it is unclear how much screen time she will have, if any.

Reportedly, Reilly will portray a retired CIA agent with a streak of paranoia while »

Mary Louise Parker Brings Heat to Adaptation of Warren Ellis’ Red

5 November 2009 7:34 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The cast for the adaptation of Warren Ellis' comic miniseries Red appears to be filling out quite nicely. It began with Bruce Willis, who was signed on from the beginning. Then in April, Morgan Freeman joined the project. Then earlier this week, the lovely Helen Mirren signed on. But wait, that's not all... According to THR's Heat Vision, Red is adding two more great names to the project. John C. Reilly -- who will play a retired CIA agent paranoid about being assassinated; and Weeds temptress Mary Louise Parker, who will play the love interest of Bruce Willis' character. Willis will play Paul Moses, whose plight can be described in the official synopsis below: As a C.I.A. operative, Paul Moses’s unique talent for killing took him around the world, from one hotspot to another, carrying out the deadly orders of his superiors. And when he retired, he »

John C. Reilly and Mary Louise Parker Join the Adaptation of Warren Ellis’ Red

5 November 2009 12:03 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

We haven't received much word on the adaptation of the Warren Ellis comic miniseries Red for some time now. Last we heard back in April, Morgan Freeman was joining the project, which already had Bruce Willis attached. Since then, Helen Mirren has signed on, and now we can add two more to the project---John C. Reilly, as a retired CIA agent paranoid about being assassinated,  and Mary Louise Parker, as the love interest to Willis's character. Robert Schwentke, he of Flightplan and The Time Traveler's Wife fame, is directing the film. Erich and Jon Hoeber (they of the recent crapfest Whiteout) wrote the screenplay. The official description of the comic follows: As a C.I.A. operative, Paul Moses’s unique talent for killing took him around the world, from one hotspot to another, carrying out the deadly orders of his superiors. And when he retired, he wanted to »

Helen Mirren Turns Red with Morgan Freeman and Bruce Willis

3 November 2009 2:27 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

In a recent report from ScreenDaily, Helen Mirren has joined the cast of Robert Schwentke’s (”Flightplan”) upcoming action-thriller “Red”, based off the comic series by Warren Ellis and Cully Hammer.  As we previously reported, “Red” is about “Paul Moses, a C.I.A. agent whose unique talent for killing took him around the world, from one hotspot to another, carrying out the deadly orders of his superiors. And when he retired, he wanted to put his bloody past behind him. But when a new administration takes over the White House, the powers that be decide that Moses knows too much, forcing him back into the game against the agency that trained him.  Sd provides no details as to Mirren’s role but I doubt it will have a moment as fantastic as her charging in on a unicorn as she did in “Inkheart”.

“Red” is scheduled to begin shooting on January 11th, »

Helen Mirren joins Red

Helen Mirren has joined the cast of Red, the DC Comics adaptation that already features the likes of Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman. Flightplan's Robert Schwentke is directing the story of a retired CIA agent who must rouse himself when a high-tech killer threatens his life. There's no word on who exactly Mirren will be playing - though we'd love to see her as the assassin (doubt it). Schwentke will gather his cast in January to start shooting with Summit Entertainment planning to release the result next November. [Source: Screen...

It appears that Helen Mirren plans to cash in on the comic-book craze. Screen Daily writes that the 64-year-old Oscar-winning actress will star opposite Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman in the movie adaptation of the graphic novel Red.

The story was written by noted author Warren Ellis and illustrated by Cully Hamner. It tells the story of a menial clerk, Paul Moses (Willis), who is actually a CIA operative with a long history of killing enemies of the state. He must come out of retirement when the new CIA director (Freeman) discovers his past and orders his death. Mirren is rumored for the part of Moses's former boss, although it is unclear how much screen time she will have, if any.

Red is being helmed by Flightplan director Robert Schwentke and will begin shooting in Toronto and Louisiana this coming January. Summit Entertainment has scheduled a November 19, 2010 release.

Collider Giveaway: The Box

30 October 2009 3:03 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Opening on November 6th is writer/director Richard Kelly’s “The Box”. The movie is set around a deceptively simple moral dilemma.  An average couple is offered an opportunity to get themselves out of financial difficulty: a million dollars, in exchange for the knowledge that their acceptance of this gift will result in the death of one person somewhere in the world - someone they don’t know.  The big question is, “What will they do?”  But writer/director Richard Kelly is also asking, “What would you do?”

While many of the various giveaway’s we’ve run on Collider have been cool, one of the prizes for “The Box” might be the best yet.  That’s because we’ve been given a replica of the box used in the movie!  According to the people providing the items, it’s retail value is two hundred dollars.  Needless to say, this is the grand prize. »

50 Influential Scream Queens: Part 2

27 October 2009 10:57 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Before I launch into the conclusion of my 50 Influential Scream Queens (read part 1 here), please let me remind you that this list is based upon my personal taste, and my personal taste alone. I didn't poll 100 Fango readers, the Fango staff or any other form of 'industry professionals'. It's all opinion, so if you feel I've wronged a certain actress by excluding them from the list, don't leap to brand the entire Fango crew 'vile'.  I probably just don't personally find their work to be that influential. Either that or I'm just ignorant to their accomplishments!

25. Mia Farrow: Mia's genre work may be a bit limited, but that doesn't change the fact that Rosemary's Baby will forever be regarded as one of the creepiest films in history. Farrow's portrayal of Rosemary Woodhouse is harrowing to say the least, and will always remain (in my mind) one of the best performances the genre has seen. »

Somali Pirates Plan On Boarding A Theater Near You

23 October 2009 12:24 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Is there any more exciting film staple than pirates? Pillaging, raping, kidnapping, cannon-firing, parrot-owning, Sicilian-beating, Keith Richards-loving, one leg missing, singing and dancing pirates! And now we can add real-life pirates to the list thanks to those pesky Somalian rapscallions who've been terrorizing the coast of Africa for the past several years. Per Variety, Columbia Pictures has hired Billy Ray to write a film based on the five-day hostage drama that played out earlier this year. More specifically, the film will center on Captain Richard Phillips whose life story rights as well as the rights to his upcoming book were optioned by Columbia. Phillips was held hostage by pirates before being rescued by Navy Seals. Spoiler alert! Ray's most recent work as screenwriter includes State of Play, Breach, and Flightplan. He also has a Westworld remake and the potential Ryan Reynolds vehicle Motorcade on his plate as well. This project is easily a year or more »

Breach Director Billy Ray Tackles Somali Pirates

23 October 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

The movie of the week business used to be the province of television and cable, but with these tougher economic times, big studios are getting into the game, too. Or trying to. Earlier this year Columbia bought the rights to the story of Richard Phillips, the captain held hostage by Somali Pirates this past May before being rescued by Navy Seals. Now the film finally has a writer. The good thing is, the writer is Billy Ray, and if there's anyone who can make this thing work as something more substantive than a movie of the week that's 18 months too late, it might be him. Shattered Glass was great, and Breach was even better. Ok, some of his writing gigs haven't panned out perfectly -- how about Flightplan and to a lesser extent State of Play -- but it's difficult to say that the work he's credited for is what »

Billy Ray to Draft Modern Day Pirate Film

23 October 2009 6:32 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

I have trained myself to roll my eyes every time I read the words “pirate film” in the headline of an article, but this is different: we’re not dealing with swashbuckling Jack Sparrow or a gaunt Kiera Knightley, but instead real life Somali pirates that have peppered the news for over a year.

Columbia Pictures is gearing up for a film that will center on “captain Richard Phillips, who was held hostage by four Somali pirates and was subsequently rescued by a group of Navy SEALs.” The film will be based on Phillips currently unpublished autobiographical tale “A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs and Five Dangerous Days.”

Here’s how swift and uncompassionate the world of film is: Columbia picked up the rights to Phillips’ story mere weeks after his rescue, which seems slightly absurd.

The film will be produced by Michael De Luca, Kevin Spacey, Dana Brunetti and Scott Rudin, »

Billy Ray to write Columbia's real-life pirate tale

23 October 2009 1:38 AM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Columbia is prepping a big-screen adventure based on the true story of captain Richard Phillips' capture by four Somali pirates earlier this year, and Billy Ray is pretty much set to write the script. Cool!

I say cool because I dig Ray's work. I really enjoyed his last directorial effort "Breach," and I enjoyed "State of Play" and "Flightplan," which he worked on as a screenwriter. He's now rewriting "Motorcade." »

Somali Pirates Head For Columbia

22 October 2009 11:53 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

The drama that played out earlier this year, 350 miles off the coast of Somalia, is on its way to cinema screens, courtesy of Columbia pictures and State of Play and Flightplan writer Billy Ray.The cargo ship Maersk Alabama was boarded and hijacked by four Somali pirates, on its way to Mombasa. The crew were able to resist to some extent, but the pirates escaped on a 28ft lifeboat with Captain Richard Phillips as hostage. A standoff with the Us Navy ensued, during which Phillips almost managed to swim for it at one point. But the siege ultimately ended with three of the pirates shot dead and the fourth, on board the USS Bainbridge negotiating a ransom, taken into custody; the first time a pirate has been taken by the Us Navy since the 1800s.Columbia has the rights to Phillips' memoir of the events, A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, »

Last we heard about Motorcade, Tom Cruise was set to star in the Len Wiseman-directed thriller - but one thing that never changes in Hollywood is the fact that things change. So now 24's Jon Cassar is directing and studio DreamWorks is chasing Ryan Reynolds to star.Of course, Reynolds is a bit busy right now gearing up for The Green Lantern, which starts shooting in the spring, but the hope is that this film will begin filming next summer or autumn, giving him time to do both. The story focuses on a disgraced Secret Service agent who happens to be in the right place at the right time to help when the Us President is kidnapped in New York.Billy Ray (2009's State of Play, Flightplan) is currently rewriting the script, from Hans Bauer and Craig Mitchell's (The Flock) original.
