A-Trak‘s been on something of a future house kick lately, and Los Angeles duo Phantoms appear to be onboard. The three of them have released a new remix this week of Bingo Players’ 2011 song “Cry (Just A Little)” that is definitely worth a listen.
The iconic, pitched-up sample from Brenda Russell’s 1988 single “Piano In The Dark” that made the original version of “Cry (Just A Little)” such a hit remains largely intact in A-Trak and Phantoms’ flip. A rubbery, frequency-modulated bass line adds a danceable warmth to the low end, though, serving to keep the track alive in light of Bingo Players’ 10th anniversary.
That being said, A-Trak‘s recent future house songs aren’t quite on par with the genre-defying innovations for which he has become such a respected fixture of electronic music. Until he releases another “Parallel Lines,” however, it’s not like his and Phantoms...

As if A-Trak‘s April song, “Parallel Lines,” wasn’t already a strong enough release on its own, he’s now uploaded a no-filler playlist of remixes of the track to his SoundCloud account. A remix series can often come across as a disingenuous means of maximizing a song’s exposure, but Mstrkrft, Chris Lorenzo, Bart B, Holl & Rush and Blu J have each delivered flips that bring something new to the table.
We’ve already sang the praises of Mstrkrft’s “Parallel Lines” remix, but Chris Lorenzo and Bart B also contributed wobble-heavy bass house versions of the track. Holl & Rush and Blu J hold down the more melodic end of the spectrum, with progressive and future house re-imaginings that fit it for festival and nightclub sets, respectively.
Obviously, countless more artists than the five included in the playlist above have remixed A-Trak‘s “Parallel Lines.” If your favorite one was left out,...

Edc Las Vegas is as good a time as any for electronic music artists to debut new music. Last night, Eric Prydz finished his set with an ID that his fans are affectionately referring to as “Nopus,” and now, A-Trak has tested out an as-yet-unreleased future house ID as well.
After captivating the audience in front of the CosmicMEADOW stage with a particularly bass-heavy edit of his Phantogram collaboration, “Parallel Lines,” A-Trak switched gears and ventured into four-four territory. In addition to a radio-friendly male vocal on the top line, the track he debuted featured the rubbery, frequency-modulate style of bass line that’s characteristic of future house.
A-Trak has yet to reveal a title, release date or any other information for the track he premiered during his performance, but will likely do so in the weeks to follow. Until we get more info, check out the song below and...

A-Trak seems to have gotten off to a slow start thus far in 2016, as his Ookay collaboration back in March left something to be desired. He’s more than made up for it though with “Parallel Lines,” which showcases a genre-bending quality that’s become the DJ/producer’s calling card since his work with the likes of Kanye West thrust him into the mainstream spotlight.
A handful of guitar chords underscore rich vocals by singer/songwriters Phantogram before a difficult-to-categorize synth melody at the drop is accompanied by tastefully sparse 808 drum rolls. This track has A-Trak written all over it; it’s radio friendly in a way that doesn’t disqualify it from the praise of music critics in the coming months.
At this juncture, it’s hard not to imagine that A-Trak‘s “Parallel Lines” featuring Phantogram will receive its fair share of placement in DJ sets over the course of festival season.

Fresh off all that media buzz about how HBO’s cult comedy The Comeback should get a comeback (sorry, I had to go there eventually), HBO is considering reviving it as a limited series. I’m excited and wary, The Comeback was an amazing, ahead-of-its-time series. It’s pretty dangerous trying to recapture that kind of magic, especially when one of the minds behind it now works on the aggressively regressive 2 Broke Girls.
It’s disappointing news but we were warned it was probably coming. USA has ordered a final, six-episode season of White Collar. Is it just me or have we been talking about a lot of USA dramas heading to their series finales, lately?
I’m going to miss these guys saving each other.
Marvel announced that Patton Oswalt will be appearing on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Agent Eric Koenig, one of the Howling Commandos.

Malin Akerman is ready to go Atomic.
The "Watchmen" beauty is set to show off her singing voice once again as she signs on to play Blondie frontwoman Deborah Harry in "Cgbg," according to Variety.
Blondie was founded in 1974 by Harry and guitarist Chris Stein and is considered a pioneer in the American New Wave and punk scenes that started explode in the mid-'70s. However, Blondie went on to become Top 40 hitmakers after the release of their album "Parallel Lines" (1978), which featured such hit singles as "Heart of Glass," "Hanging on the Telephone," "Sunday Girl" and "One Way or Another."
Blondie were regulars at such New York venues as Max's Kansas City and, of course, Cbgb. "Cbgb" chronicles the rise of this now-defunct hotspot, which was founded by club owner Hilly Kristal (to be played by Alan Rickman in the film). Akerman joins a cast that includes Rupert Grint...

Inspired by the Menil Collection‘s retrospective of the drawings of Richard Serra, which is currently on display until June 10, Aurora Picture Show curator Mary Magsamen will screen a series of short films that focus on gestures and lines created through animation, documentary and/or computer graphics.
This is an outdoor screening, so please bring your own blankets, lawn chairs and, if you like, a picnic dinner.
The Richard Serra exhibit inside the Menil is the first retrospective of the sculptor’s drawings, some of which have directly inspired his sculpture work while some remain completely independent of his other art. The show is organized chronologically and includes new large-scale works that were produced specifically for this exhibit.

There’s another update on the new adaptation of Logan’s Run, which has gone through several creative iterations in the past few years but now has a new screenwriter to hopefully get things moving again.
Directors Bryan Singer and John McTeigue kicked the project around for a while and Alex Garland wrote a script for the film, which goes back beyond the Michael York/Jenny Agutter rendition of 1976 straight to the source and the William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson novel. Garland’s script was at one time to put directed by Carl Erik Rinsch, whose futuristic short ‘The Gift’ bode extremely well for the future utopia of Runners and Sandmen. Sadly this was not to be and yet there was another twist in the long gestating tale as Nicolas Winding Refn was announced as the man to direct the film, with his Drive actor and all round man of the moment,...

Ok, I gotta admit, I love the Driver games. The first game was the reason I bought a PS1 all those years ago. The sequel introduced horrendous pop-up and the ability to get out of your vehicle for some ‘on foot’ action. Where that led was to GTA3. People slated Driv3r, because it couldn’t match up to GTA3: true, but I still loved it on its own terms. And then finally Parallel lines came along, again to mixed reviews but surprisingly, again I thought it was great – the Wii version being the best of the bunch.
So now in 2011 we have Driver: San Francisco hitting the home consoles, and a whole different adventure for 3Ds – Driver: Renegade 3D.
The game is set in New York City, with events taking place some time between Driver 1 and 2. John (where did that come from?) Tanner is the main man once...

New York (Reuters) - In more than 30 years since smash hit song "Heart of Glass" took Blondie from new wave upstarts to mainstream stars, frontwoman Deborah Harry has transformed herself many times, younger members have joined the band and albums have gone from vinyl to digital.
Still, the band's newest new wave is unmistakably Blondie.
On September 13, Blondie will celebrate the U.S. release of its ninth studio album, "Panic of Girls." In keeping with record industry trends, the album is being released independently on the group's own imprint and will be sold on CD and digital download exclusively on Amazon.com.
Harry, 66, whom Lady Gaga recently called "the most legendary woman in rock," said Blondie is just as much a part of the future as it is the past.

Director Guillermo del Toro has said time and time again that if you send him your stuff such as a short film, he will watch it, and that he will respond. He's set up an e-mail account where people can submit their stuff. It's one thing to just say you'll do something, it's another to actually do it. It's awesome to see him take action and actually follow through with what he say's. That takes the director to a whole new level of greatness. Especially with how busy he is.
One particular Reddit user sent his short film in, and Del Toro sent him a response within 24 hours with notes on how to make it better. Here's what the director said...

Guillermo del Toro is one of those rare directors that always keeps a channel open for his fans. Whether he's featured on a panel at a convention or moderating a screening, he loves to not only talk about his films, but great films in general. One tool that he has used to keep connected with his admirers is an email account where people can send him some of their own stuff for him to watch. If you're lucky, like one particular Reddit user, he'll even send you some notes on how you can fix it. The aforementioned recently decided to send the Pan's Labyrinth director a short film that he had made and just 24 hours later sent him a response with this honest thoughts. The email, which you can see Here, read as follows: Re: When Parallel Lines Meet Veyr [sic] sweet little story. The short is very nimble and ...

We just posted the first trailer for Robert Kouba's The Rift, but if you're curious to see some some of his handiwork, look no further than this stellar short he made for the Phillips Parallel Lines competition. If you recall, the competition asked that each entry used the same script. Other than that, they could do whatever they wanted. Kouba went all out and took his characters in to the far reaches of space.
Synopsis:
In a distant future after an inexplicable disaster has destroyed the world entirely, a man goes to search for a mysterious glass statue which is the home for a lonely unicorn.
So, if The Rift caught your eye, check out Translucent Unicorn after the break.

Ridley Scott is no stranger to indie projects, in 2010 the producer/director helped bring about 'Parallel Lines', a collection of film shorts, telling different stories but all sharing one unique thing - the dialogue. Each film used the same seven lines of dialogue to tell an entirely different story, and while this project may have come about to promote Phillips' latest TV, what it gave the industry was some fantastic pieces of work.
Now Scott is at it again, producing a project called Life in a Day. This time however, the project is on a much grander scale. Directed by award winning director, Kevin Macdonald, Life in a Day is a ground breaking documentary made up entirely of user-generated video, shot around the world on a single day - July 24, 2010. Just a quick thanks to our readers and congratulations to Porcelain Unicorn filmmakers Keegan Wilcox (director) and Anselm Clinard (producer) who won the Philips Parallel Lines competition.
Director Sir Ridley Scott (of Blade Runner, Gladiator, and American Gangster fame) hand picked Porcelain Unicorn from the top five finalists. Those films had been narrowed down from a field of over 600 by viewer votes.
Keegan's prize (in addition to a bunch of great Phillips equipment) is a week working at a Ridley Scott office. No details yet on where or when, but Keegan promised us an interview when the week is over.
Say "hi" to Ridley for us!

Thanks to your help, Porcelain Unicorn is one step closer to Ridley Scott. This weekend the short film made it into the final five in the Philips' Parallel Lines competition. From here, the grand prize is in the hands of the Blade Runner director himself.
But Keegan Wilcox and crew still need your help one last time. Another round of viewer votes will determine the winner of the People's Voice Award. So if you enjoyed the film, log back on to the Philips' YouTube page and give it one more "thumbs up."
The final winners will be announced the week of September 21.

Porcelain Unicorn is a short film directed by Keegan Wilcox, that packs a big punch into three minutes. It spans half a century and with very little dialogue tells the story of two young children in war torn Germany, who find common ground through a small trinket.
Earlier this summer the short was entered into the Phillips Parallel Lines film competition hosted by Ridley Scott (of Blade Runner, Gladiator, and American Gangster fame). The winner will get to work for one week at one of Scott's offices—a dream come true for any aspiring director.
The Parallel Lines YouTube page displayed hundreds of entries and viewers voted for their favorites. Porcelain Unicorn has made it all the way to the top ten semi-finals, and by Sunday viewer votes will determine the final five. At that point Ridley Scott himself will chose the winner.

Sorry for the lack of updates as I'm ill (and I do mean that in both ways) but I just got this in my email and had to share. Thanks to the Qe team for keeping things running while I miss out.
And a statement from director Slavik Anishchenko:
Synthetic World is a Philips Parallel Lines contest entry. The rules are simple, under 3 minutes and must use pre-written dialogue in a very strict order.
My concept is a very realistic idea about the natural change in human evolution. The story takes place in the year 2213 on planet Earth, where the world is united as one, with countries acting as Republics of the planet. The idea is not for robots or machines to take over, but for us to evolve with the help of technology into more machine like beings. We would still retain a lot of characteristics, but get...

A highlight of the first half of 2010 was the culmination of Ridley Scott Associates’ collaboration with Philips to create five short films whose only connection were the six lines of dialogue to be used.

As District 9 illustrated last year, it’s an exciting time for young, technically gifted film-makers to use short films/test reels as a way of showcasing their talents and nabbing that highly sought-after Hollywood feature deal.
I remember seeing an impressive short called The Raven (embedded below) by filmmaker Ricardo de Montreuil a few months back and thinking then that it would only be a matter of time before I’d hear from him again.
Well, here the news!
Latino Review has just confirmed that Mark Wahlberg is in talks to produce and take the leading role in the feature-length version at Universal. Montreuil is still on board as director and up-and-coming scribe Justin Marks will pen the script.

Well, here the news!
Latino Review has just confirmed that Mark Wahlberg is in talks to produce and take the leading role in the feature-length version at Universal. Montreuil is still on board as director and up-and-coming scribe Justin Marks will pen the script.

In April, Philips released their collaboration between five filmmakers from Ridley Scott Associates, called Parallel Lines. Scott's commercial division Rsa was asked to create a series of short films in a genre of their choice, using "the same unifying theme." Rsa directors submitted forty-five treatments and Philips selected five it believed were most ground-breaking: Jake Scott, Greg Fay, Johnny Hardstaff, Carl Erik Rinsch, and Hi-Sim. Carl Erik Rinsch's futuristic action thriller short film The Gift was the leader of the pack, spawning a bidding war between several big Hollywood movie studios to turn the short film into a feature. We even broke more information about the project, titled Small, and posted some leaked concept renderings. News broke over the weekend that Rinsch's The Gift has won the inaugural Gold Film Craft Lion at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival in Cannes. Parallel Lines also received a Grand Prix for Direction,...

Ubisoft revealed a fantastic new trailer for their upcoming video game Driver: San Francisco. I have to admit, when I first heard about the game I wasn't really interested in it, but then I saw this trailer at E3 and I was completely sold! This game looks awesome! The graphics are incredible, and this trailer does a great job of pumping up the game with its fast paced action-packed driving madness. I don't see how you can watch this trailer and not be excited to play this game.
The game takes place after the events of Driv3r. It is revealed that both John Tanner and Charles Jericho survived the shootout in Istanbul. However, after Jericho shot Tanner, he is taken to a hospital and left into a coma.
The game is similar to previous games in the series. The player controls Tanner in various missions through the streets of San Francisco.

The much anticipated Logan’s Run remake is a step closer today with the news that one of Ridley Scott’s own, Carl Erik Rinsch, is talking to Warners about taking over the project.
The 1976 film was a favourite of mine and told the story of a future society in which the population is maintained by the process of Carousel in which every citizen who reaches the age of thirty is killed. Those who decided not to celebrate the end of their twenties in that fashion were dubbed Runners and it is up to the Sandmen to hunt them down and wish them a happy birthday by shooting them.
Pre-Superman Returns Bryan Singer was working on this one before he jumped ship for the cape and, as any good property primed for a remake will do, it sat around waiting for the right creative team to get it started again.

A few months ago, Philips embarked on a new idea that they called Parallel Lines. Philips teamed together with Ridley Scott Associates to create five different short movies around the same line of dialogue. One of the movies was directed by Johnny Hardstaff who created Darkroom, which I’ve embedded below for you to check out.

Along with the whole scheme, Philips sent out different boxes to different websites across the world which coincided with one of the five films. The box I received was for Darkroom and contained:

The big news this week has revolved around Jj Abram’s next project, and the rumours and half truths surrounding it. Did he just direct the teaser, is he directing the full film? Is it a Cloverfield sequel or prequel? Right now we have as many questions as answers, but we do know that Jj Abrams is directing Super 8, Steven Spielberg is producing, and we’ll see it in Summer 2011.
We also know that it will be set in 1979, and will revolve around an extraterrestrial happening of some sort, reminiscent of Spielberg’s movies from that very period, speaking of Et and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It is an interesting and exciting idea. You don’t get the kind of alien movies Spielberg made any more, filled with mystery and wonderment. We are much more cynical nowadays, and demand grittier, more realistic storylines. As intrigued by the movie as i am,...

Philips makes HDTVs, and so in an effort to distinguish themselves from Sony, Peyton Manning, and Justin Timberlake, they took the next natural course and sponsored a short-film project. Called "Parallel Lines," the project was a partnership with Ridley Scott's production company Rsa. Which basically means that 45 directors associated in one way or another with Rsa submitted short films in a variety of genres. Five films were selected as best demonstrating "how Ambilight, picture quality and sound quality of Philips TVs bring cinema home." In other words, they picked stuff that looked cool. I don't know what Ambilight is. It sounds like a cheap light beer marketed to the power walking community, or maybe to EMTs.
In any case, these five shorts made the cut and got put up online:
The Gift: Robot butlers and car chases in Moscow!
El Secreto de Mateo: A boy, a secret and a donkey.

Filmmaker Carl Erik Rinsch caused a bit of a stir a couple days back when his scifi short, The Gift, premiered online. Part of the Phillips "Parallel Lines" project, the short film about a robot manservant (I want one) who goes on the run to keep a *sighs* unicorn out of the hands of dirty Russian police.
Long story short, the film caused a bidding war for Rinsch's feature length project, Small, which according to /Film who got the skinny and on the project, has been in the works for a long time. So, no the studios aren't looking to make a feature out of the short, but rather the short was probably designed as a spin off of the feature package.
/Film also scored some stunning concept art/photography which I'm pretty sure will tickle all your imaginations. Go on, tell me you don't want to see this movie after looking at that artwork.

Mr. Ridley Scott has a cadre of talented directors he keeps penned up under his Ridley Scott Associates banner. It’s kind of like a record label I guess, where I’m sure Ridley downloads his most excellent skills to the likes of Carl Erik Rinsch and Johnny Hardstaff (not his porn name). The Parallel Lines project is brought to you by Phillips, makers of fine electronica. They sponsored a bunch of films that all use the same dialogue. Directors were free to make whatever film they wished within those constraints. In the first, by Rinsch, called “The Gift”, a robotic manservant goes on the run to protect something very special. In the next short, called “Darkroom” from Mr. Hardstaff, a spy guy with Blade Runnerish tech spies on some nefarious goings on. Both of these films are sweet looking. Can’t wait to see more from both of these guys.

This week a short film by Carl Erik Rinsch has been circulating the Internet (via /Film) as part of Philips’ “Parallel Lines” advertising campaign and partnership with Ridley Scott Associates. Rinsch’s short film “The Gift” blends science fiction elements of a CGI robotic servant, a mysterious box, a futuristic Russian dystopia, and a pre-selected piece of dialogue used by all the participating directors.

Lately it seems that if you want to break into Hollywood, the best way to do it is with an eye-catching short film. Ever since Neill Blomkamp hit paydirt with District 9, a feature-length version of his short film "Alive in Joburg", studios have been looking for more talented filmmakers to offer brief 5 to 10 minute glimpses of potential blockbusters. Uruguayan director Federico Alvarez also landed a deal [1] with Sam Raimi's production company last year based on the strength of his YouTube hit Panic Attack!. Yesterday Dave and I watched the five Parallel Lines short films at a BAFTA screening and saw some pretty impressive work by the five directors.
If you’ve not read the article please take a look, not least because we’ve embedded each of the five films into the post, you’ll also have a reference point for this post.
Five of the directors from Ridley Scott’s Rsa company took part in the Philips Parallel Lines project and one which made a great impression on the gathered journalists and film students was Carl Erik Rinsch’s kinetic future thriller The Gift.
Carl Erik Rinsch was tipped to make his feature debut with the forthcoming prequel to Ridley Scott’s Alien until the higher powers demanding Scott himself take on the project, and in The Gift we see why Sir Ridley was happy to entrust one of his greatest legacies to this man.

Heat Vision reports the following short titled "The Gift," directed by Carl Erik Rinsch is getting some attention around Hollywood and has sparked a bidding war. The film is part of Phillips's short film project titled "Parallel Lines" and is centered around a mysterious box said to contain a "unicorn" that inspires a CG-driven chase sequence.
If the name of Rinsch is familiar, it's because he has received a high level of praise from Ridley and Tony Scott and was once thought to be directing the upcoming Alien prequel, which Ridley is now directing himself.
Check out the short below and see what you think. Any desire to see more of this story and more from Rinsch? Technically I think the film is great and the mystery behind the premise is interesting, but without knowing what we are dealing with I can't quite say if a Hollywood treatment of the material is necessary.

We've said it before and here it is again: Corporate-sponsored film making is playing an increasingly important role in the world of short film and that role is only likely to increase with time. The trend really took off in the west with the Clive Owen starring series of films sponsored by BMW a few years back but more recently Absolut footed the bill for Spike Jonze's I'm Here and now Phillips has backed a five film series titled Parallel Lines, with all five directors culled from the stable of Ridley Scott's Rsa commercial production outfit.
The concept behind these are a little bit different. Rather than just telling the directors to show off their new TV - the ultimate point of it all - Phillips gave Rsa a complete dialogue list and had all of the directors - more than 40 - submit their pitches based on that dialogue.

Synopsis: Philips selected a single unifying theme and challenged Rsa’s (Ridley Scott Associates – Founded by Sir Ridley Scott) directors to create a cutting-edge short film in a genre of their choice to showcase the cinematic capabilities of Philips TVs. More than 45 submissions were received and five were selected to be produced in genres ranging from drama, action, animation, sci-fi to thriller. The chosen film directors are Greg Fay, Johnny Hardstaff, Carl Erik Rinsch, Jake Scott and Hi-Sim.

Ridley Scott, one of the most celebrated director in cinematic history. He helmed Gladiator, Alien and of course is lensing the upcoming Robin Hood picture starring Russel Crowe – so why would he promote a Phillips product release? Maybe because in some little way it breaks new ground in cinema?
Parallel Lines is a series of short films, each being directed by a separate master and each telling a separate story. The thing that ties them together? Six lines of dialogue, word for word, in each picture.
We’ve been sent a package for Parallel Lines, to mark it’s release and to provide you, our precious readers, with a little mission. Six lines, six packages, each contains a line of the aforementioned dialogue and each has been sent to a different site. Your job is to track down each line and find out what the whole caption is before the release date of April 8th.
