Now that "Avatar" star Sam Worthington has returned from the distant star system in which the planet Pandora resides, bringing back with him a $77 million opening weekend for the sci-fi action flick, where will the Australian actor go from here? What will 2010 and beyond look like for one of the year's breakout stars?

"Clash of the Titans" After the holidays, Worthington will head back to Britain for reshoots on this remake of the low-tech 1981 flick based on the Greek legend of Perseus. MTV News got a first look at the production when we visited the set this past summer. There, the actor promised us the film would take the original's action sequences and "raise the Richter scale to 11." Early trailers, »

Directors of the Decade: Gus Van Sant

10 December 2009 5:47 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Robert here, continuing my series of the directors that shaped the past 10 years. Most of the directors I’ve written about have been either newcomers or have taken their earlier success and continued it into the aughts. Not many have reinvented themselves for this decade. But today’s man did: Gus Van Sant

Number of Films: Six

Modern Masterpieces: Oh who’s to say. I don’t expect this to be echoed but I’m going with Gerry.

Total Disasters: No. Psycho was last decade.

Better than you remember: All three entries in the death trilogy have gotten somewhat of a bad rep.

Awards: Nominated for Best Director for Milk and the Palme D’or for Elephant

Box Office: With over 51 mil, Finding Forrester understandably tops the more experimental fare.

Critical Consensus: With a Rotten Tomatoes score over 90%, Milk understandably tops the more experimental fare.

Favorite Actor: Matt Damon in »

The Naughts: The Actor of the '00s

3 December 2009 10:06 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Quietly and unexpectedly, Matt Damon has become the premier Hollywood actor of the past decade. He's lent his minutely constructed, surprisingly athletic performances to the films of directors Steven Soderbergh, Gus Van Sant, Paul Greengrass, Martin Scorsese and Clint Eastwood, a roster that's not coincidentally produced some of the most vital and successful films of the past ten years.

His remarkable career isn't simply a matter of a good agent. It's all in the manner in which he so carefully adapts his particular skills to the roles.

Damon's commitment is displayed on his body, which he relentlessly crafts to the specifications of each character -- he's almost the anti-movie star in his physical malleability. Take a look at how he changes from "The Bourne Identity" in 2002 to the Farrelly Brothers' "Stuck On You," a year later. In the former, he carved himself down to muscle and bone, a tightly packed »

Avatar” star Sam Worthington has signed on to produce and star in the adaptation of Rick Remender's “The Last Days of American Crime."

Worthington will produce the film with his business partner, Michael Schwarz. Radical Publishing’s President Barry Levine and Executive Vice President Jesse Berger are also onboard as executive producers with Remender.

Confirming last week’s report, Worthington will portray Kevin Cash, a dangerous sociopath who is recruited to take part in what may be the last crime in American history.

"Sam is the perfect guy for this,” related Remender. “He's a scene stealer, made up in equal parts charm and intelligence. Seeing him play violent sociopath safe cracker Kevin Cash will be a treat all the world will enjoy."

Last February, Remender told MTV News that he was tapped to write the screenplay adaptation of his forthcoming three issue miniseries with artist Greg Tocchini. “Last Days” takes »

Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation, Avatar, Clash Of The Titans) is set to star in the big screen adaptation of Radical Publishing’s upcoming comic “The Last Days Of American Crime“.

The graphic novel was written by Rick Remender and illustrated by Greg Tocchini, described as a mix of heist thriller and sci-fi.

From Radical’s website, here’s the synopsis:

With one week until the end of all crime in the United States, can the last heist in American history be pulled off? In the not-too-distant future as a final response to terrorism and crime, the U.S. government plans in secret to broadcast a signal making it impossible for anyone to knowingly commit unlawful acts. To keep this from the public, the government creates a distraction, installing a new currency system using digital charge cards.

Enter: Graham Brick. A career criminal never quite able to hit the big score, »

'Avatar' Star Sam Worthington Signs On For 'Last Days Of American Crime' Adaptation

19 November 2009 6:01 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Terminator: Salvation” star Sam Worthington has signed on to appear in the film adaptation of Rick Remender's upcoming miniseries “The Last Days of American Crime."

Created and written by Remender with artist Greg Tocchini, “Last Days” takes place in the near future where the U.S. government is about to implement a new technology that will make it impossible for anyone to commit a crime. Following the revelation of this plan, a downtrodden career criminal named Graham Brick is forced to quickly assemble a team to help him pull off what may be the last heist in American history.

According to Mania.com, Worthington will portray Kevin Cash, a safecracker recruited by Brick who may be a dangerously unstable sociopath.

After his turn as the Human/Terminator hybrid Marcus Wright in last summer’s “Terminator: Salvation”, Worthington’s next film will be the hotly anticipated “Avatar” by director James Cameron. »

We're just a weekend away from the most anticipated Gossip Girl musical guest ever (sorry, Sonic Youth): Lady Gaga!

Judging from our three sneak peeks, the theme of this episode, titled "The Last Days of Disco Stick," is all about "Bad Romance"--what with Dan dealing with the threesome-aftermath, and Serena and Tripp still tripping over their overwhelming sexual tension.

Plus: one diplomat's son is about to make a dangerous alliance on the Upper East Side, and it's not with Chuck Bass.

The Team Behind 'This Is It' Remembers Michael Jackson

28 October 2009 8:30 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

From MTV.Com: The crew that worked with Michael Jackson while he prepared for his 50-show This Is It concert run in London had no idea about the unfortunate events that were to come; in fact, many of the people involved felt that the final rehearsals were incredible and a sign of what was to come from the King of Pop.

"Michael stood out in front of the stage with me and looked at the rehearsal and said, 'This is the dream. This is the dream, good Kenny. You did it,' " director Kenny Ortega told MTV News. "I think there was this feeling in the room, in the air — we all could feel like you were on the plane, you were packed. We were going. You could see London; you could smell it."

Gus Van Sant's Golden Suicides

13 October 2009 11:46 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

In a pact guaranteed to raise both eyebrows and hackles, Gus Van Sant has teamed up with Brett Easton Ellis to write The Golden Suicides, based on the true story of the double suicide of artists Jeremy Blake and Theresa Duncan.Blake and Duncan were popular New York Artists who, for reasons unknown, became increasingly paranoid that they were being conspired against by the Us government and the church of Scientology. Duncan overdosed on Tylenol in July 2007, and Blake is believed to have drowned himself in the Atlantic a week later. The film stems from a Vanity Fair article by Nancy Jo Sales, and the subject seems to fit perfectly with Van Sant's "Death Trilogy" of Gerry (David Coughlin), Elephant (Columbine) and Last Days (Kurt Cobain) although at this point he's only attached as a writer and not as a director.Ellis' (American Psycho, The Rules of Attraction) involvement is »

What I Watched, What You Watched: Installment #5

This week I caught up with one television show and ventured into Whit Stillman territory for the first time... Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) Quick Thoughts: Recently I asked a group of critics prior to a film screening what they thought of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Everyone seemed to say they enjoyed it and one person said he thought it was funny. This was my second time watching this movie as I still have the HD DVD from Universal and wanted to give it another chance after not particularly taking to it the first time. When it comes down to it I have no real opinion one way or the other. The film is okay and I really want the Criterion edition for the three separate commentaries, but other than that it's simply a'ight. There is, however, one thing I did take away from it, which was »

Following up on their Michael Jackson tribute issue, Rolling Stone has put the pop star on the cover for the second consecutive issue. The cover story, called "Michael Jackson's Final Days," delves deep into the events that led up to Jackson's death on June 25, including preparations for his This Is It concerts in London and his attempts to reorganize his life into something a little more inconspicuous. The piece visits Jackson's rehearsal spaces (there were a total of three) and quotes the people who surrounded the singer at the end of his life, including session musicians, security guards and promoters.
