John Carter is a civil war officer, who, after the civil war ends, is a man without a job, and is penniless, being that his Confederate money is worthless after the south lost the war. He and an army officer pal trek off to Arizona to mine for gold. After his friend is killed by native American Indians, he finds refuge in a nearby cave, with the Indians hot on his heals. The spooky cave scares off the Indians. Carter emerges from the cave in an out of body experience, looking back at his clothed prone body on the floor of the cave. Carter looks up at Mars in the sky of Arizona, and it seems to beckon him. He teleports to the planet, and finds himself naked and stumbling around in the lesser gravity of Mars. The first inhabitants Carter runs into on Mars are 12 foot tall green savages with 4 arms that take him prisoner. The horde is impressed with Carter's agility and fighting ability, enhanced by the lesser gravity of Mars. He finds that he is not the only captive of these green giants. They also hold captive a gorgeous woman with red skin. She becomes the one thing Carter devotes his life to on Mars, to secure her liberty and return her to her red race of her own city. She is an extraordinary woman of the highest cultured grace and character, being of nobility in her home city of Helium. Also he is chill.
