I knew that Mark Strong was popping up a lot these days, but I didn’t realize just how often until now. In addition to playing in the villain in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes this Christmas, Strong is also in Kick-ass and Robin Hood. But if that wasn’t enough, he’s just added another big film to his plate. Strong will be the nemesis for Mr. John Carter in John Carter Of Mars, Andrew Stanton’s sci-fi epic slated for release in 2012. Talking to »

Out doing promotion for "Sherlock Holmes", British thesp Mark Strong ("Body of Lies," "Rocknrolla") tells Cinema Blend that most of his work on the upcoming "John Carter of Mars" film will not involve much CG.
"My character doesn't actually get involved in any of the motion-capture stuff. All the stuff is live action. Although I can shift my shape, so I have to be photographed by a 360-degree camera. I can adapt into anything. That's going to be my particular talent" says Strong who plays Matai Shang, the ruler of the Thems.
He adds that "there's some filming in Utah, but most of it is in a studio outside of London". Joining him are the likes of Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, Dominic West, Polly Walker, Thomas Haden Church and James Purefoy.
Andrew Stanton helms the project currently scheduled for a Summer 2012 release. »

Earlier today, I got to speak on the phone with the great actor Mark Strong (IMDb resume), who plays the villainous Lord Blackwood in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes. Due to our conversation covering so much ground on not only Holmes, but all of the other projects he’s involved with, I decided to break up the interview into two parts with tonight’s section covering what Strong said on Andrew Stanton’s John Carter of Mars, Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass, and Ridley’s Scott’s Robin Hood.
Trust me when I say, if you are interested in any of the three films I just mentioned, you will want to read what Strong said after the jump:
For fans of John Carter, Strong says he plays Matai Shang and “over the course of the 3 movies that they’re envisioning making, and I’ve seen the synopsis of the 2nd and 3rd, »

Disney recently halted plans to produce the film Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The film was set to begin production in Feburuary. Director McG has also withdrawn himself from the project. The troubled production never set an official cast and may end up a casualty of the new regime established at Disney. However, Disney insists that big event films like 20,000 Leagues, John Carter of Mars and Tron are still a priority to new chief Rich Ross.
McG will focus on other projects such as the Warner Bros. film Dead Spy Running and a new comedy for NBC being developed with Larry Charles, writer of Borat. McG is also still attached to Terminator 5, but the rights to that property are held up by bankruptcy proceedings.
Captain Nemo seemed like a cool idea, but it’s no big loss to me. This move will allow them to focus more energy »

Having put the final touches on a brilliant cast, John Carter of Mars is getting underway at Disney. Edgar Rice Burroughs' epic series has seen a lot of stops and starts over the years, and it's still unbelievable that it's actually happening. But at this point, it's still shrouded in pre-production mystery, but Ain't It Cool News wheeled a little information out of Willem Dafoe about his role as Tars Tarkas, a great Martian warrior and eventual ally of Carter. (Do AICN's Capone a favor and read the whole interview when you're done here. It's excellent.)
Dafoe revealed to Capone that he doesn't know much more than you or I might, but his enthusiasm for Tarkas and for Andrew Stanton is contagious. "I've seen a lot of the designs and things, and I've just started to do prep work now. I'm doing a play in New York, so I'm kind of preoccupied by that, »

Not long after the announcement that Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins were cast in the lead roles in the upcoming adaptation of John Carter of Mars, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ series of novels, we found out the talented Willem Dafoe would be playing an important character in the film(s) as well.
At the time, we knew that Dafoe would be playing the role of Tars Tarkas, a big green Martian who eventually befriends the Kitsch’s John Carter, after an unfriendly beginning to their relationship. Tarkas is a warrior and leader of his people and a very unique one at that because he, against the laws and norms of his society, shows compassion and sympathy, and even had a child secretly with the woman he loved (child bearing is a major criminal offense of his people) - he actually believes war isn’t the answer for his kind.

I really do not mean the title to be any sort of innuendo. It's true though, but not in the phallic sense (I have an unintentionally dirty mind). In Willem Dafoe's next movie John Carter Of Mars, he will play a 9 foot tall alien called Tars Tarkas. He gave some information about the movie during an interview with AICN. Dafoe says that he doesn't know much about the project at this point, but is excited to be working again with Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo) and Pixar. The actor said this »

Willem Dafoe is a special man—a man deserving, like Tracy Morgan, of his own Oh Please Join Twitter campaign—and anything he has to say is intriguing to me. And it's especially intriguing if what he's talking about is "John Carter of Mars," Edgar Rice Burroughs' sci-fi series currently getting the big screen adaptation treatment from Pixar eye-candy guru Andrew Stanton ("Wall-e").
With shooting set to start in January, Dafoe's gearing up to play Tars Tarkas, a many-limbed green Martian warrior who befriends Carter (Taylor Kitsch) after he gets mysteriously transported from Civil War-era America to the Red Planet. And after getting a chance to see early takes on what his character will look like, Dafoe is pumped.
"I’ve seen renderings," the actor told MTV's Josh Horowitz recently while promoting "Antichrist" in Toronto. "Andrew Stanton comes out of Pixar and the amount of research and development that »

The Disney adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ series of novels, John Carter of Mars, and hopeful trilogy of films said to be comparable in scale to Pirates of the Caribbean, has added another three major members to its cast.
If you’re excited about this project already then you should be ecstatic to hear that Mark Strong, James Purefoy and Thomas Haden Church have all signed on for the film.
Let’s go through the cast members we know of so far…
Back in June after the success of X-Men Origins: Wolverine at the box office, two of its supporting actors were picked up to play the leading lad and lady for the upcoming epic trilogy of John Carter of Mars movies.
Those two actors were of course Taylor Kitsch who will be playing the title character and Lynn Collins will play Dejah Thoris, the damsel in distress and heir »

The Hollywood Reporter writes that three more actors will star in Pixar's first live-action movie, John Carter of Mars. Thomas Haden Church, James Purefoy, and Mark Strong have joined a cast that already includes Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, Taylor Kitsch, and Lynn Collins.
The story involves John Carter (Kitsch), a Civil War veteran who is transported to Mars. But this isn't the barren red planet we know; this Mars is a violent society involving "12-foot-tall green barbarians," according to IMDb.
Church will portray a warrior with a desire for power, Purefoy a captain, and Strong the ruler of a people called the Thems. Directing the movie is Andrew Stanton, who also co-wrote the script. Stanton has already helmed several Pixar features, including Wall-e, Finding Nemo, and A Bug's Life.
The movie is still in pre-production and is scheduled for a 2012 release.

Purefoy plays Kantos Kan, the captain of the Xavarian, the kingdom of Helium’s grand warship. Strong is Matai Shang, the ruler of the Thems with godlike status. You can add three more names to Disney’s upcoming “John Carter of Mars” in Thomas Haden Church, James Purefoy and Mark Strong. THR says Church, Sandman in “Spider-Man 3″, will be playing Tal Hajus, an ambitious and vicious Thark warrior who is biding his time to be a ruler. Earlier this summer the casting news on John Carter of Mars, to be directed for Disney by Pixar's Andrew Stanton, starting pouring out. Now we've got three more great names for the cast -- well, two more and one confirmation. THR reports that Thomas Haden Church will in fact appear in the film, as Tal Hajus, described by the trade as "an ambitious and vicious Thark warrior who is biding his time to be a ruler." The Tharks are a tribe of four-armed green martians, among whom Confederate army Captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) finds himself after being transported to Mars (which is called Barsoom by the races there.) The Tharks kidnap Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins), Princess of the red martians whose society Helium is the dominant group among the warring inhabitants of Mars. The fantastic Mark Strong, new to the cast, will be Matai Shang, a godlike leader of »

It boggles my mind that Pixar is going to be involved in a live-action movie, even though it makes complete sense. These guys are masters of storytelling and imagine the stories they could tell with real life people. With Andrew Stanton sitting in the director.s chair for John Carter of Mars, just about anything is possible, even without the millions of options that animation offers. Now, in addition to Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins, THR reports that Thomas Haden Church, James Purefoy and Mark Strong have joined the cast of John Carter of Mars. For those who don.t know, the series follows John Carter, a Civil War vet who finds himself mysteriously transported to Mars where he finds himself in the middle of a warring planet. Thomas Haden Church will play a warrior looking to become a ruler. James Purefoy will play a captain. Mark Strong will play »

Things are moving along quite nicely for Pixar's live-action John Carter Of Mars, with a cast confirmation and 2 new additions to what is already a solid and impressive ensemble. Except for Taylor Kitsch - no offense but his Gambit didn't quite dazzle me. Neither did the rest of the movie, to be fair. The folks of THR's Heat Vision blog were able to confirm Thomas Hayden Church was signed as a villain (of course...poor Tom) named Taj Hajus. Good thing that film's in English 'cause in French »

While we knew back in June that Thomas Haden Church was joining the cast of Andrew Stanton’s “John Carter of Mars” although Church didn’t reveal what role he’d be playing. Today, we not only have confirmation that Church is in the flick, but we now know the role. We also know that he’ll be joined by James Purefoy and Mark Strong. Hit the jump for details.
For those just tuning in, “John Carter of Mars” is based off the book series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Taylor Kitsch is set to play John Carter, a Civil War soldier who is transported off the battlefield to Mars where he becomes entangled with the Civil War happening on that planet. So other than the whole planet thing, it’s really not that big of an adjustment.
According to Heat Vision Blog, Church will play Tal Hajus, “an ambitious and »
