I knew that Mark Strong was popping up a lot these days, but I didn’t realize just how often until now. Mark Strong Talks "John Carter of Mars"

Out doing promotion for "Sherlock Holmes", British thesp Mark Strong ("Body of Lies," "Rocknrolla") tells Cinema Blend that most of his work on the upcoming "John Carter of Mars" film will not involve much CG.

"My character doesn't actually get involved in any of the motion-capture stuff. All the stuff is live action. Although I can shift my shape, so I have to be photographed by a 360-degree camera. I can adapt into anything. That's going to be my particular talent" says Strong who plays Matai Shang, the ruler of the Thems.

He adds that "there's some filming in Utah, but most of it is in a studio outside of London". Joining him are the likes of Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, Dominic West, Polly Walker, Thomas Haden Church and James Purefoy.

Earlier today, I got to speak on the phone with the great actor Mark Strong (IMDb resume), who plays the villainous Lord Blackwood in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes.  Due to our conversation covering so much ground on not only Holmes, but all of the other projects he’s involved with, I decided to break up the interview into two parts with tonight’s section covering what Strong said on Andrew Stanton’s John Carter of Mars, Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass, and Ridley’s Scott’s Robin Hood.

McG Leaves Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Project

Disney recently halted plans to produce the film Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The film was set to begin production in Feburuary. Director McG has also withdrawn himself from the project.    The troubled production never set an official cast and may end up a casualty of the new regime established at Disney.  However, Disney insists that big event films like 20,000 Leagues, John Carter of Mars and Tron are still a priority to new chief Rich Ross.

McG will focus on other projects such as the Warner Bros. film Dead Spy Running and a new comedy for NBC being developed with Larry Charles, writer of Borat. McG is also still attached to Terminator 5, but the rights to that property are held up by bankruptcy proceedings.

Having put the final touches on a brilliant cast, John Carter of Mars is getting underway at Disney. Edgar Rice Burroughs' epic series has seen a lot of stops and starts over the years, and it's still unbelievable that it's actually happening. But at this point, it's still shrouded in pre-production mystery, but Ain't It Cool News wheeled a little information out of Willem Dafoe about his role as Tars Tarkas, a great Martian warrior and eventual ally of Carter. Dafoe revealed to Capone that he doesn't know much more than you or I might, but his enthusiasm for Tarkas and for Andrew Stanton is contagious. Willem Dafoe Talks John Carter of Mars & His Character

Not long after the announcement that Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins were cast in the lead roles in the upcoming adaptation of John Carter of Mars, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ series of novels, we found out the talented Willem Dafoe would be playing an important character in the film(s) as well.

At the time, we knew that Dafoe would be playing the role of Tars Tarkas, a big green Martian who eventually befriends the Kitsch’s John Carter, after an unfriendly beginning to their relationship. Tarkas is a warrior and leader of his people and a very unique one at that because he, against the laws and norms of his society, shows compassion and sympathy, and even had a child secretly with the woman he loved (child bearing is a major criminal offense of his people) - he actually believes war isn’t the answer for his kind.

I really do not mean the title to be any sort of innuendo. It's true though, but not in the phallic sense (I have an unintentionally dirty mind). John Carter of Mars Cast Grows Stronger

The Disney adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ series of novels, John Carter of Mars, and hopeful trilogy of films said to be comparable in scale to Pirates of the Caribbean, has added another three major members to its cast.

If you’re excited about this project already then you should be ecstatic to hear that Mark Strong, James Purefoy and Thomas Haden Church have all signed on for the film.

Three Additions to Cast of Pixar's John Carter of Mars

The Hollywood Reporter writes that three more actors will star in Pixar's first live-action movie, John Carter of Mars. Thomas Haden Church, James Purefoy, and Mark Strong have joined a cast that already includes Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, Taylor Kitsch, and Lynn Collins.

The story involves John Carter (Kitsch), a Civil War veteran who is transported to Mars. But this isn't the barren red planet we know; this Mars is a violent society involving "12-foot-tall green barbarians," according to IMDb.

Church will portray a warrior with a desire for power, Purefoy a captain, and Strong the ruler of a people called the Thems. Directing the movie is Andrew Stanton, who also co-wrote the script. Stanton has already helmed several Pixar features, including Wall-e, Finding Nemo, and A Bug's Life.

The movie is still in pre-production and is scheduled for a 2012 release.

It boggles my mind that Pixar is going to be involved in a live-action movie, even though it makes complete sense. These guys are masters of storytelling and imagine the stories they could tell with real life people. Things are moving along quite nicely for Pixar's live-action John Carter Of Mars, with a cast confirmation and 2 new additions to what is already a solid and impressive ensemble. Except for Taylor Kitsch - no offense but his Gambit didn't quite dazzle me. Neither did the rest of the movie, to be fair. The folks of THR's Heat Vision blog were able to confirm Thomas Hayden Church was signed as a villain (of course...poor Tom) named Taj Hajus. Good thing that film's in English 'cause in French »

While we knew back in June that Thomas Haden Church was joining the cast of Andrew Stanton’s “John Carter of Mars” although Church didn’t reveal what role he’d be playing.  Today, we not only have confirmation that Church is in the flick, but we now know the role.  We also know that he’ll be joined by James Purefoy and Mark Strong.  Hit the jump for details.

For those just tuning in, “John Carter of Mars” is based off the book series by Edgar Rice Burroughs.  Taylor Kitsch is set to play John Carter, a Civil War soldier who is transported off the battlefield to Mars where he becomes entangled with the Civil War happening on that planet.  So other than the whole planet thing, it’s really not that big of an adjustment.
