"The Insider" has the latest... Ellen DeGeneres announced on Wednesday that she will be taking over as the fourth judge on "American Idol" and has now revealed why she thinks she'll make a good fit. "I'm just a fan like everybody else," she told "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest on his Kiis-fm radio show Thursday morning. "People choose the American Idol -- ultimately it doesn't come down to some expert in the music industry, it comes down to everybody at home saying 'that’s the person I relate to,' so I hope to be that voice." Ellen goes on to say that she has yet to talk to Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson or Kara DioGuardi about her new role and just hopes that "Paula [Abdul] is okay" with her taking the spot that Paula originated.. "I was shocked," she said of Paula's departure. "Paula was a huge part of the show.

The Brits are in a mess: They have freed the Lockerbie bomber for reasons that nobody truly, or reasonably, believes. And yet, maybe they know what they’re doing. True, something always seems terribly off about Gordon Brown’s government. It is not just that so much of what they do has been incompetent, but that it looks squirrelly, shame-faced, and defensive. They’re not just sneaks, but they keep getting caught. In theory, Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi has been freed from his life sentence in Scotland to return to Libya on compassionate grounds: He has cancer and will reportedly be dead in three months. This theory has not been helped by the fact that he is ambulatory, almost jauntily so, and has been giving interviews to almost anyone who asks. But even more to the point, governments, as everybody knows, seldom do the compassionate thing. They do the...

Fans of "Firefly" know the sting of network ambition all too well. But now it looks like Fox has finally learned its lesson when dealing with the creativity of Joss Whedon . they will now be leaving the show alone with faith in what Whedon brings to the screen. "[The mandate is] to keep doing what he's doing," President of entertainment for Fox Broadcasting,, Kevin Reilly, said. "That is really the gift of Joss. Some people can create a good show. Joss was pretty open about those hiccups. I think in the second half of the year, he found the show and started having fun with it. I don't think he was having a lot of fun early on, but he was fantastic to work with all the way through. The fact that he found that, it will be much smoother sailing this year." Even with the good news that ...

The CIA tells lies to the rest of the American government. Rupert Murdoch’s tabloids engage in nefarious means, including illegal electronic eavesdropping, to get dirt on celebrities. The current director of the CIA, Leon Panetta, has apparently admitted as much to Congress. The Guardian says Murdoch has paid out $1.6 million to secretly settle cases of phone hacking. Each of these stories ought to be seismic. The CIA, at the center of the intelligence debacles of the last decade, ought to be investigated at least as intensely as it was in the late '70s after revelations of its internal spying. The Murdoch organization in the UK, which has as much influence on the British government as any other private business, ought to face the kind of independent examination that could, free from outside influence, send an impressive number of Murdoch lieutenants to jail. And yet, the overwhelming likelihood is that Washington and London shrug.

As the clock ticks down to the series finale of Lost, it's time to begin imagining how it will end for our heroes (and villains). We just caught up with Benjamin Linus himself, Mr. Michael Emerson, at the True Blood premiere, where he appeared with his wife, Carrie Preston (she plays flame-haired Merlotte's waitress Arlene on the HBO drama), and he assured us Ben is still in the game. In fact, there is every possibility that Ben will get away with all his dastardly deeds in the end... Amid much discussion of which characters will be back for season six, Emerson's Ben seems virtually guaranteed to return: "My feeling is that [Ben] will have a role to play in the next season," he told us. "And I...
