'Prison Break' Actor Goes from Jail to Screenwritng

10 December 2009 3:51 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

This story, if it pans out the way it's supposed to, is so nice that I might not even make fun of it very much. You may recall that Lane Garrison, best known for appearing in TV's Prison Break, was driving drunk in December 2006 when he hit a tree, killing a 17-year-old male passenger and injuring two 15-year-old female ones. He pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter and was sentenced to 40 months in prison, then escaped when his heavily tattooed brother was sent to the same prison and busted him out. No, I kid. He was released this past April for good behavior.

Now The Hollywood Reporter has word of Garrison's next step: He's writing a screenplay, based on real events, about a football team from a Texas school for teenagers convicted of violent crimes. Think The Longest Yard, but with kids, and inspiring, rather than whatever The Longest Yard was supposed to be. »

Lane Garrison Scripting An Emotional Football Movie

9 December 2009 8:40 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

The United States prison system has over two million people incarcerated around the country. It is a constant source of debate, dividing the nation on issues such as mandatory minimum sentences, three-strike laws, and privatization. If we were to simply take a tip from Hollywood, however, all of the problems could be solved tomorrow. All we would have to do is make an all-prisoner football league. Despite the fact that this idea has been done multiple times (two versions of The Longest Yard, Gridiron Gang, and the documentary it was based on to name a few) former Prison Break star and recent inmate Lane Garrison is now scripting One Heart, a screenplay about a football team made up of young convicts. According to THR the story is based on a team from Gainesville State School in Texas who lost every game in 2008, but in their final game, the opposition's crowd »

'Blind Side' Tackles Post-Thanksgiving Blahs

6 December 2009 4:07 PM, PST | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Though The Blind Side still packed a wallop, the movies as a whole saw a typical post-Thanksgiving slide over the weekend. However, due to the momentum from last weekend's record Thanksgiving gross, overall business was the highest the timeframe has ever seen (although not in terms of attendance), up 21 percent over the same period last year.

As indicated by their close grosses last weekend, The Blind Side out-paced The Twilight Saga: New Moon to claim the top spot. Down 49 percent, the football-themed drama had the best hold among nationwide releases, racking up an estimated $20.4 million. With a super $129.3 million tally in just 17 days, it surpassed Rocky IV to become the highest-grossing sports drama on record (though it 's still a far cry off in terms of attendance). Among football movies, only the Adam Sandler comedies The Waterboy and The Longest Yard made more, and Blind Side will soon overtake them as well. »

Trailer - Sandler and Company in 'Grown Ups'

13 November 2009 6:12 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Grown Ups is the movie that Adam Sandler made so that all his good friends can buy an extra house. I guess Chris Rock and Kevin James probably don't need the help, but Rob Schneider has gone nowhere fast (or maybe not so fast), and David Spade's one trick seems to have run its course, too, unless you're a really big fan of tacky DirecTV commercials.

About a year ago, you'd think this would be a can't-miss prospect, just because of Sandler's track record and the small interest generated by re-teaming all these Saturday Night Live alumni, but he's returning about $50 million less per movie than he did with The Longest Yard back in 2005. And that's just the "Sandler movies," for which this one clearly qualifies.

So can he turn it around and score a massive hit, or are the slowly eroding returns a sign of something? We'll find out next summer, »

Live-Action ‘Jetsons’ Movie Gets ‘Smart’ New Director

2 November 2009 11:32 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

How did this news slip past us all? According to a source that the guys over at Pajiba have, Robert Rodriguez won’t be directing the long in-development live-action Jetsons movie. It was only this summer that we got word that The Jetsons was firmly on its way, with an early draft of the script having been written, and Rodriguez himself sounding enthusiastic after he said he’s been working on ideas for the adaptation for a long time.

However, Rodriguez has his fingers in a lot of pies right about now: He has his full-length Machete movie (currently in the editing stages); he’s heavily involved in the Predators reboot; apparently he has Spy Kids 4 in the works (it was only a matter of time…); and, of course, there’s the much-anticipated, long gestating Sin City 2 (which could be filming next year, last we heard). So it’s kind of understandable, »

Bella Swan's Truck And Tracy Morgan's Services In Today's Twitter-Wood

21 October 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Tracy Morgan may have had the most re-tweeted post of the day in my personal Twitter follow feed. I've re-tweeted it myself so that you can find out what he'll do for $15.

In other Twitter news, David Slade elaborated on a photo he posted yesterday, clarifying that the headlight shown does belong to Bella Swan's truck in "Eclipse." And speaking of "Twilight" movies, Jamie Campbell Bower took top honors for Twitter Pic of the Day today. I'm not entirely sure what his sign means or what promises he's fulfilling for his fans, but you can check it out and make that judgment for yourselves. Check all of those quotes and pics out below, along with Lindsay Lohan's paparazzi triumph, the puppet that hit on Ice-t's wife and much more. It's all after the jump in the Twitter-Wood report for October 21, 2009.

Five Projects for Dce to Jump On, Day 3: ‘Shazam’

16 September 2009 5:03 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

It didn’t matter that DC Comics sued Fawcett Comics in 1953 for copyright infringement due to Fawcett’s Captain Marvel looking too similar to Superman.  DC would end up owning everything Captain Marvel in the early ’90s, implanting the character firmly into the DC Universe, and making various attempts over the year at reviving the character in their own series.  Of course, in the interim, Marvel Comics trademarked their own Captain Marvel, and the title of DC’s character was changed to Shazam!.  Regardless of what you call the character, he’s a square-jawed throwback to the old-school superhero look that, with all the nostalgic love for the ’50s going around, would be a perfect character to supplant in to the world of film.

New Line agrees with this assessment.  As early as 2002, New Line was in negotiations with DC to bring the Captain Marvel/Shazam! storyline to the big screen. »

"He Doesn't Have My Permission to Die Yet!": Twelve Evil Movie Wardens

3 September 2009 7:43 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Nobody wants to go to jail. But if you've got to go to jail, just hope you don't do it in the movies. Odds are if you're going to movie jail, you're going to wind up at the mercy of some jerk warden (or captain or superintendent or game show host of a dystopian future) who wants to torture you for kicks.

It happens time and again, most recently in this week's "Gamer" where poor Gerard Butler plays an inmate who finds himself as a running man in a death race against the southern-accented treachery of Michael C. Hall. In honor of "Gamer," here are 12 more corrupt and sadistic movie wardens who could scare anyone straight.

Weekly Poll Results: Best Football Movie

2 September 2009 9:15 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Last week's poll was a battle of pigskin pics, and Film Junk readers decided that the #1 football movie is the inspirational Rudy starring Sean Astin, followed very closely by Remember The Titans starring Denzel Washington. Peter Berg's Friday Night Lights placed third, which isn't bad, but I kind of expected it to get a few more votes, especially because of the popularity of the TV show. Oliver Stone's Any Given Sunday and the original The Longest Yard rounded out the top 5. Brian's Song was way down at the bottom, although I'm guessing a lot of people simply haven't seen it? I hear it's a classic. Do you concur with these results? 1. Rudy -- 23.5% 2. Remember The Titans -- 21.2% 3. Friday Night Lights -- 14.2% 4. Any Given Sunday -- 13.3% 5. The Longest Yard (1974) -- 7.5% 6. Jerry Maguire -- 6.6% 7. The Program -- 5.8% 8. The Replacements -- 3.1% 9. We Are Marshall -- 2.7% 10. Brian's Song (1971) -- 2.2% For More Daily Movie Goodness, »

FX Set for March to Madness

24 August 2009 6:28 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

FX has picked up March to Madness, a drama project from exec producer Don Cheadle that chronicles the glory and the seedy side of college basketball, according to Variety.

Joel Silverman is writing the script, while Pete Segal (The Longest Yard) is set to direct. Also attached to the project alongside Silverman, Segal and Cheadle are former college basketball coach Dave Miller and Segal's producing partner, Michael Ewing.

March to Madness will revolve around a corrupt college basketball program that cheats its way to the "March Madness" Ncaa basketball tournament. The project will be told through the eyes of the college coach, whose idealistic approach to the job has slowly been eroded by the compromises he's forced to make.

The creatives behind the hourlong drama are intimately familiar with the subject. Silverman spent several years as a sports journalist, covering beats including Acc basketball for outlets such as the Washington Post. »

Actor-turned-writer says yes to Shazam!

19 August 2009 5:54 PM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

Warner Bros. hasn't had any success so far in developing the DC Comics property Shazam! into a movie. Writer after writer after writer has sat down in front of their computer screens and done draft after draft after draft but still the project has failed to move forward. There was some interest from Dwayne Johnson in playing Black Adam, the main adversary to the Shazam! hero Captain Marvel, but that still wasn't enough to do the deed.

But Warners isn't giving up. A while back a decision was made to enlist the help of a trifecta of superstar DC Comics writers -- Grant Morrison, Geoff Johns and Marv Wolfman -- to serve as a creative think tank. Each of the three comic book writers would become a shepherd for one particular DC Comics property that was in the process of being adapted into a Warner Bros. feature film, acting as »

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed Unfortunately it's a very bad week for DVD and Blu-ray releases, but let's rundown the list anyway as maybe some of you are looking forward to at least renting one or two of these. The Soloist The best new film of the bunch has to be The Soloist, but even it isn't a stand-out masterpiece by any stretch. It does have a couple of good performances and is certainly worth a once over, but as far as being a purchase I would definitely recommend against it. Mutant Chronicles This action-sci-fi feature starring Thomas Jane, John Malkovich and Ron Perlman is probably the title I am most interested in renting and a little upset I forgot to request a review copy, but Netflix will take care of that. Race to Witch Mountain Ugh, just a bad, bad movie. Kids may »
